Grape seed and green tea extracts are reported to produce antioxidant scavenging activities against free radical toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that a specific combination of these extracts presents a synergistic antioxidant scavenging activities. The extracts of grape seed, green tea and their mixtures were characterized by phytochemical studies and tested for phenolics and flavonoids. In vitro antioxidant activity for individual extract and its mixtures was determined by DPPH, hydroxyl and superoxide free radical scavenging methods. The amount of total phenolics varied among the different extracts and ranged from 43.74 to 67.68 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE) / g dry weight, whereas total flavonoids content ranged from 4.25 to 11.66 mg of quercetin equivalents (QU) /g dry weight. The present results suggest that both extracts reported a highly contents of total phenolic and flavonoids compounds, also the mixtures of these extracts can synergistically enhance antioxidant activity. Antioxidant potential from mixture 2 (grape seed extract 200 mg: green tea extract 100 mg) was comparable to that of standard. HPLC results showed that the most abundant components in the mixture 2 extract were epigallocatechingallate while the lowest was the procyanidine.

Pterygota alata is a large deciduous tree of Malvaceae family. The present study was designed to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activity of stem bark of the plant. Ferric reducing power (FRP) test, 1, 1- diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging test and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assay were used to detect the antioxidant activity. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined as they are well known phytochemicals with antioxidant property. The bark of the plant showed efficient reducing power as well as free radical scavenging property (IC50 values 52.25 - 172.05). The bark also found rich in total phenolic and flavonoid content. The highest amount of total phenolic content was found in chloroform soluble fraction (29.898 µg/mL) followed by ethyl acetate soluble fraction (15.88 µg/mL). The highest content of total flavonoid also detected in chloroform soluble fraction (107.56 µg/mL) but followed by crude ethanol extract (98.66 µg/mL). Overall, the bark of the plant possesses significant antioxidant activity, therefore can be used as a good natural source of antioxidant. © 2014 JSR Publications. Antioxidant potential of Rosa L. leaves methanolic extracts was evaluated in vitro using a spectrophotometric method based on measuring the radical scavenging effect on 2,2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The contents of ellagic acid, quercetin and kaempferol in the extracts from leaves of seventeen rose species were determined using SPE-RPHPLC methods. Additionally, total phenolic content was determined spectrophotometrically according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and calculated as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). Remarkable high antioxidant activity and high total phenolic content (5.7% < GAE < 15.2%), large ellagic acid (EA) content from 9.37 to 19.42 mg/g of dry weight, a quercetin content ranging from 3.68 to 15.81 mg/g of dry weight and kaempferol content from 1.25 to 9.41mg/g of dry weight were found in rose leaves. Significant correlation between EA (r2 = 0.6131), quercetin (r2= 0.5158), total phenolic content (r2= 0.8485) and antioxidant activity was observed. Basing on the studies conducted one may assume that the extracts of rose leaves are a rich source of natural antioxidants and could be used to prevent free-radical-induced deleterious effects.

Germander (Teucrium, Lamiaceae) is a genus commonly used as a medicinal herb in the middle east. The aim of this study was to estimate total polyphenols and antioxidant activity of different extracts from two Syrian Teucrium species (Teucrium polium and Teucrium creticum). Total polyphenols content was measured using Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro by DPPH assay (free radical scavenging activity against 1, 1 –diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). The total polyphenols content and antioxidant activity of T. creticum extracts were higher than T. polium ones. Phenols contents ranged from 16.388 to 105.672 mg GA E/ g dry weight extract. The extracts showed significant scavenging activity against DPPH, with IC50 values ranging between 0.195 and 0.710 mg/ml. The methanolic extracts show higher antioxidant activity from the two species. A good correlation between DPPH scavenging activities and contents of polyphenols was found. These results show that Syrian Teucrium species, especially T. creticum least Known among all, is a rich source of phenols and natural antioxidant compounds, that can be used as a natural food preservative.

Cordia macleodii, an important medicinal plant traditionally used for the treatment of various disorders, including wound healing, jaundice, gastric ulcer, hepatoprotective activity and antivenom potential, thus the plant showed the high antioxidant properties. Successive extraction of leaf and barks powder with methanol and water was tested for quantitative determination of total phenolics, total flavonoids and various in vitro antioxidant activities. Phytochemical screening of crude plant extracts revealed the presence of sterols, alkaloid, flavonoid, phenolic, Reducing sugar, glycosides, tannins and saponins. All extracts showed the significant total phenolic and flavonoid contents and as well as radical scavenging and iron-chelating activities. Among all, methanol leaf extract was observed to be higher antioxidant activity than that of other extract. The methanol extracts showed greater antioxidant activity by DPPH scavenging the free radical with IC50 values of 7.63 ± 0.38 μg gm-1 along with scavenged free radical in a concentration depended manner, which is compare to the standard ascorbic acid.  Our results revealed that the presence of grater antioxidant activity of C. macleodii extract may be due to the high level of flavonoid and phenolic content in the plant. These results clearly indicated that C. macleodii is an effective natural antioxidant. Key words: Cordia macleodii, antioxidant, radical scavenging, phenolics, flavonoid, phytochemical.

A series of β-Isatin aldehyde-N,N′-thiocarbohydrazone derivatives were synthesized and assayed for theirin vitroantimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The new compounds were characterized based on spectral (FT-IR, NMR, MS) analyses. All the test compounds possessed a broad spectrum of activity having MIC values rangeing from 12.5 to 400 μg/ml against the tested microorganisms. Among the compounds3e,3jand3nshow highest significant antimicrobial activity. The free radical scavenging effects of the test compounds against stable free radical DPPH (α,α-diphenyl-β-picryl hydrazyl) and H2O2were measured spectrophotometrically. Compounds3j,3n,3l, and3e, respectively, had the most effective antioxidant activity against DPPH and H2O2scavenging activity.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Additional therapies using functional foods and dietary supplements have been investigated and used in clinical practice, showing them to be beneficial. Honeybee pollen from Chile has shown a large concentration of phenolic compounds and high antioxidant activity. In this work, we characterized twenty-eight bee pollen extracts from the central zone of Chile according to botanical origin, phenolic profile, quercetin concentration, and antioxidant activity (FRAP and ORAC-FL). Our results show a statistically significant positive correlation between total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. Selected samples were evaluated on the ability to reverse the steatosis in an in vitro cell model using Hepa1-6 cells. The pollen extracts protected Hepa1-6 cells against oxidative damage triggered by 2,2′-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)derived free radicals. This effect can be credited to the ability of the phenolic compounds present in the extract to protect the liver cells from chemical-induced injury, which might be correlated to their free radical scavenging potential. Additionally, bee pollen extracts reduce lipid accumulation in a cellular model of steatosis. In summary, our results support the antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-steatosis effect of bee pollen in an in vitro model.

The present study investigated the effect of 1-MCP on bioavailability of Lingwu long jujube stored at 0 °C for 60 days. At the end of the storage, compared with the control samples, Lingwu long jujube treated with 1-MCP exhibited higher Vc bioaccessibility, total phenolic content and free radical scavenging capacity, which demonstrated that 1-MCP treatment could provide a better effect on maintaining the bioavailability of Lingwu long jujube.

This research adopts the pancreatin hydrolysis of silk fibroin active peptide, evaluate the antioxidant activity of hydrolysates. In the process of hydrolysis of silk fibroin, by measuring the amino nitrogen content of neutral formaldehyde titration method. Find the amino nitrogen content gradually stabilized at around 0.37g/L, and superoxide free radical scavenging rate changing with time fluctuation trend, superoxide free radical scavenging rate to a maximum of 65.03% at 220min.The use of silk fibroin hydrolysis process optimization,reaction time 160min, enzyme concentration4% , substrate concentration 20mg/ml, pH 8, temperature 38°C. The hydrolysis process under the hydrolysate on superoxide radical scavenging rate of 72.73%. The scavenging rate of hydroxyl radical is 47.24%. Red blood cell hemolysis induced by H2O2 inhibition rate was 24.30%.

Background: Research on medicinal plant antioxidants has emerged as a potential therapeutic to prevent free radical generated damage in the human body. Hammada elegans Botsch (popularly known as “Ajram”) is a xerophytic plant widely found in Laghouat region, but there are only a few reports about the biological or chemical properties of these species. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant and the antihemolytic activities of hexanic, acetonic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Algerian Hammada elegans Botsch by employing different in vitro assay systems. Methods: The total phenolic content, the flavonoid content and the condensed tannin amount were analyzed using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminum chloride and vanillin assays, respectively. The in vitro antioxidant capacity of extracts was assessed by CUPRAC, iron chelating, ABTS•+and antihemolytic assays, and was expressed as EC50 values. Results: Among the analyzed extracts, the aqueous extract had the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents. Also, this extract displayed the highest antioxidant capacities compared to the other extracts and standards. Its EC50 value for ABTS radical-scavenging activity was 0.265 ± 0.003 mg/L. Moreover, this extract showed high iron (II) chelating ability (EC50 = 0.958 ± 0.001 mg/L), and good antioxidant activity in the cupric ion reducing activity (CUPRAC) in a concentration dependent manner (EC50 were 0.709 ± 0.002 mg/L). Additionally, this extract had the best antihemolytic activity against AAPH-induced hemolysis (EC50=0.090 ± 0.004 mg/L). Conclusion: Our study revealed that the aqueous extract of Hammada elegans Botsch, is a potential source of antioxidants which possess a high protective effect of membrane against free radical.
