The performance of two heated water-bath humidifiers was examined in terms of airway temperatures and humidities. These were the simple heated tank [Marshall and Spalding, 1953) and the Fisher and Paykel No. 328 (Spence and Melville, 1972), both of which had the potential to deliver gases at temperatures above 40°C, and with a moisture content in excess of 50 mg/litre. The major advantage of the No. 328 was its heating wire in the delivery tube. This lessened or prevented condensation within the tube, and allowed the water bath to be maintained at lower temperatures. Independent heat controls for the water bath and the delivery tubing allow precision of humidities in the gases provided for inspiration through an artificial airway. When condensation is prevented, the temperature of the saturated gases leaving the humidifier limits the absolute humidity supplied. Monitoring and adjustment of airway temperature of the patient then allows selection of temperature and relative humidity in the inspired gas.

The objectives of this work were to evaluate and adequate the method of thermotherapy via humid heat for the treatment of safflower seeds (Carthamus tinctorius L.) and, to verify its effect on the physiological and sanitary quality of seeds. The experiment was performed in the period from September to November, 2016 and from May to July, 2017, in entirely randomized design, arranged in 5 × 6 + 1 factorial scheme, with five temperatures: 25, 35, 45, 55 and 65 ºC and with six time periods: 5, 10, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min, plus the additional treatment (control), with eight repetitions. The seeds were packaged in glass of 500 mL and disposed in thermodigital water bath device with heated water according to the abovementioned factorial. We evaluated the degree of humidity of the seeds after thermotherapic treatments, the germination of normal seedlings, the emergence at field, the speed indexes of germination and emergence, the length and dry mass of seedlings and the sanity test. We observed that the treatment of seeds via humid heat thermotherapy was efficient in the control of phytopathogens, without damage to the physiological quality until 45 ºC. The treatment of 45 ºC for 15 min provided the greater reduction of the pathogens on the safflower seeds, incrementing its germinative potential and emergence at field.

The Fock test is widely used for assessing the reactivity of dissolving pulp. The objective of this study was to modify the method to improve the repeatability of the test. Various parameters that affect the repeatability of the Fock test were investigated. The results showed that Fock reactivity is dependent on testing conditions affecting the xanthation between cellulose and carbon disulfide, such as the moisture content of the pulp sample, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, xanthation temperature, carbon disulfide dosage, and xanthation time. The repeatability of the test was significantly improved using the following modified testing procedure: air dried sample in the constant temperature/humidity room, xanthation temperature of 66°F (19°C) in a water bath, xanthation time of 3 h, NaOH concentration of 9% (w/w), and 1.3 mL carbon disulfide.

In order to prepare standardized extract, optimization of extraction conditions of grape seed has been done. These conditions are type of menstrum (50, 70 and 96% of ethanolic solution), length of extraction (1, 2 and 4 hours) also method of evaporation (reduced pressure and opened air). Activity on free radical scavenger used as parameters to determine optimum conditions. Based on EC50 (concentration which scavenge 50% amount of free radical) can be concluded that optimum condition for extracting antioxidant active compound from grape seed are 70% ethanolic solution as menstrum, length of extraction 1 hour and evaporation on opened air use water bath.
