The scorpionfish Scorpaena decemradiata n. sp. is described from off the coast of Israel in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea. The new species is similar to S. porcus Linnaeus, 1758, but is characterized by dorsal fin spines XII, soft dorsal fin rays 10 (the last divided at base); pectoral fin rays 16, uppermost branched pectoral fin ray is the second; lacrimal with 2 spines over maxilla that point at nearly right angle from each other, the posterior pointing ventrally and slightly anteriorly; occipital pit well developed; anteriormost mandibular lateral-line pores small, separated; scales ctenoid; 59-62 scale rows in longitudinal series; scales absent on chest and pectoral fin base; and cirri developed over entire head and body, but no cirri on lower jaw. An updated checklist of the species of the genus Scorpaena Linnaeus, 1758 and a key to the species of the eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea are presented.

The biomechanics of animal limbs has evolved to meet the functional demands for movement associated with different behaviors and environments. Effective movement relies not only on limb mechanics but also on appropriate mechanosensory feedback. By comparing sensory ability and mechanics within a phylogenetic framework, we show that peripheral mechanosensation has evolved with limb biomechanics, evolutionarily tuning the neuromechanical system to its functional demands. We examined sensory physiology and mechanics of the pectoral fins, forelimb homologs, in the fish family Labridae. Labrid fishes exhibit extraordinary morphological and behavioral diversity and use pectoral fin-based propulsion with fins ranging in shape from high aspect ratio (AR) wing-like fins to low AR paddle-like fins. Phylogenetic character analysis demonstrates that high AR fins evolved independently multiple times in this group. Four pairs of species were examined; each included a plesiomorphic low AR and a high AR species. Within each species pair, the high AR species demonstrated significantly stiffer fin rays in comparison with the low AR species. Afferent sensory nerve activity was recorded during fin ray bending. In all cases, afferents of stiffer fins were more sensitive at lower displacement amplitudes, demonstrating mechanosensory tuning to fin mechanics and a consistent pattern of correlated evolution. We suggest that these data provide a clear example of parallel evolution in a complex neuromechanical system, with a strong link between multiple phenotypic characters: pectoral fin shape, swimming behavior, fin ray stiffness, and mechanosensory sensitivity.

Abstract We assessed the effect of fin-curl on the swimming and station-holding ability of juvenile shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus (mean fork length = 17 cm; mean weight = 16 g; n = 21) using a critical swimming speed test performed in a small swim chamber (90 L) at 20°C. We quantified fin-curl severity using the pectoral fin index. Results showed a positive relationship between pectoral fin index and critical swimming speed indicative of reduced swimming performance displayed by fish afflicted with a pectoral fin index < 8%. Fin-curl severity, however, did not affect the station-holding ability of individual fish. Rather, fish affected with severe fin-curl were likely unable to use their pectoral fins to position their body adequately in the water column, which led to the early onset of fatigue. Results generated from this study should serve as an important consideration for future stocking practices.

For white sturgeon taken incidentally in the salmon gillnet fishery in the Fraser River during the summer of 1962, pectoral fin ray sections indicated that over three-quarters were fish aged 9–16 years. Gillnets for salmon apparently select sturgeon over a size range between 30 and 60 inches. Back-calculation of size attained at previous ages indicated that after attaining a length close to 20 inches by age 5, the sturgeon grow about 2 inches per year to about age 25. Limited data from pectoral fin ray sections suggest that age at first spawning is from 11 to 22 years for males, and from 11 to 34 for females. Subsequent spawning is apparently at intervals of 4–9 years. Fraser River sturgeon are more piscivorous than has been recorded for white sturgeon and other sturgeon species elsewhere, about one-half of the stomachs containing fish, especially eulachons. The age distribution in the catch, though biased by selection, was used to estimate rates of natural and fishing mortality. The eumetric fishing curve suggests that present yield could be increased by a greater size at first capture, particularly if the natural mortality rate is as low as 0.05. The history of the sturgeon fishery suggest that sustainable yield could exceed 100,000 lb per year. The commercial landings in recent years average 30,000–40,000 lb. The sport fishery may take an additional 20,000–30,000 lb. Sustained yield in the circumstances of the present fishery could be 80,000 lb per year, about 25% more than the present catch. Some recommendations are made for management, stressing the importance of protection of an annual spawning population of 300–600 females.

A new uranoscopid fish, Ichthyscopus pollicaris sp. nov., is described from East Asia waters around Taiwan and Japan. It can be distinguished from other congeners in having the ventral midline of the belly forming 3 prominent prolonged skin flaps, its posterior nostril oval to circular in shape, its pectoral-fin base lacking distinct blotches, and the uppermost pectoral-fin ray and adjacent interspace membrane with 1 or 2 white spots. The biogeography of I. pollicaris is discussed.

Two new species of Trichomycterus from isolated small river basins of southeastern Brazil are described: T. pantherinus, new species, from the Rio Santa Maria da Vit ria basin, and T. caudofasciatus, new species, from the Rio Itabapoana basin. Both new species are diagnosed by a combination of morphological features, also occurring in T. alternatus and T. longibarbatus, including number of pectoral-fin rays, odontodes and branchiostegal rays, long filamentous first pectoral-fin ray and wide opercular patch of odontodes. Trichomycterus pantherinus differs from other congeners by possessing a light orangish yellow flank with dark brown to black rounded spots. Trichomycterus caudofasciatus is distinguished from other species of the genus by having four gray bars on the caudal fin.

The clingfishes Lepadichthys frenatus Waite 1904 and Lepadichthys misakius (Tanaka 1908) are both redescribed as valid species, although the latter has previously been regarded as a junior synonym of the former. Lepadichthys frenatus and L. misakius are easily distinguished from their congeners by the following combination of characters: 14–19 dorsal-fin rays; 12–14 anal-fin rays; disc size moderate, its length 15.1–20.8 % of standard length (SL); and dorsal, anal and caudal fins connected by membranes. Lepadichthys misakius can be distinguished from L. frenatus by having 25–28 (modally 26 or 27) pectoral-fin rays [vs. 27–29 (29) in L. frenatus]; the upper end of the gill membrane level with the 5th to 8th (usually 6th) pectoral-fin ray base in lateral view [vs. 6th to 8th (7th)]; the lower 8th to 11th (9th) pectoral-fin ray base attached to the disc base by membrane [vs. 10th to 12th (11th)]; 7–11 (9) gill rakers on each arch [vs. 11–14 (12)]; anterior, posterior and least interorbital widths 9.0–11.8 (mean 10.7), 13.4–16.9 (15.3) and 3.2–8.8 (6.2) % SL, respectively [vs. 8.4–10.2 (9.4), 12.1–14.7 (13.5) and 2.8–5.9 (4.8) % SL, respectively]; and NC2 (nasal canal pore) usually located between the anterior and posterior margins of the posterior nostril (vs. usually located before the posterior nostril anterior margin). Morphological changes with growth of the two species are described in detail and a lectotype designated for L. frenatus.

This study reports five species of Pareuchiloglanis in the Lancangjiang drainage of China, including descriptions of two new species: P. abbreviatus sp. nov., P. gracilicaudata, P. kamengensis, P. myzostoma and P. prolixdorsalis sp. nov. The two new species are distinguished from P. feae, P. poilanei, P. sichuanensis and P. tianquanensis by a shorter adipose-fin base and the adipose-fin base being separated from the caudal fin, differ from P. sinensis, P. macrotrema, P. longicauda and P. rhabdurus by a more restricted gill opening (not reaching the base of the first pectoral-fin element ventrally), and differ from P. songmaensis by an anal-fin ray count of ii-3-4 (vs. ii-8). Pareuchiloglanis abbreviatus is distinguished from congeners by the tip of the dorsal fin reaching the origin of the adipose fin when depressed. Pareuchiloglanis prolixdorsalis is distinguished from P. gongshanensis, P. macropterus and P. kamengensis by lacking a sulcus between the lower lip and the base of the maxillary barbel, and differs from P. anteanalis by the shorter pectoral fin, the pectoral fin not reaching to the origin of pelvic fin. It differs from P. gracilicaudata, P. myzostoma, P. nebulifer and P. robusta by a caudal-fin ray count of 6+7 (vs. 7+8), and differs from P. abbreviatus by the tip of dorsal fin not reaching to the origin of the adipose fin when depressed (vs. reaching). It differs from P. songdaensis by the distance between the origin of the pelvic fin to the base of the anal fin being longer than that to the mouth (vs. equal).
