Since several species of Schistosoma, or blood fluke, parasitize man, these trematodes have been subjected to extensive study. Light microscopy and conventional electron microscopy have yielded much information about the morphology of the various stages; however, scanning electron microscopy has been little utilized for this purpose. As the figures demonstrate, scanning microscopy is particularly helpful in studying at high resolution characteristics of surface structure, which are important in determining host-parasite relationships.

ObjectivesTo describe HIV children's small intestinal ultrastructural findings.MethodsDescriptive, observational study of small intestine biopsies performed between August 1994 and May 1995 at São Paulo, SP, Brazil. This material pertained to 11 HIV infected children and was stored in a laboratory in paraffin blocks. Scanning and transmission electronic microscopy were used to view those intestine samples and ultrastructural findings were described by analyzing digitalized photos of this material. Ethical Committee approval was obtained.ResultsIn most samples scanning microscopy showed various degrees of shortening and decreasing number of microvilli and also completes effacements in some areas. Derangement of the enterocytes was seen frequently and sometimes cells well defined borders limits seemed to be loosened. In some areas a mucous-fibrin like membrane with variable thickness and extension appeared to partially or totally coat the epithelial surface. Fat drops were present in the intestinal lumen in various samples and a bacterium morphologically resembling bacilli was seen in two occasions. Scanning microscopy confirmed transmission microscopy microvilli findings and also showed little “tufts” of those structures. In addition, it showed an increased number of vacuoles and multivesicular bodies inside various enterocytes, an increased presence of intraepithelial lymphocytes, mitochondrial vacuolization and basement membrane enlargement in the majority of samples analyzed. However, some samples exhibited normal aspect.ConclusionsOur study showed the common occurrence of various important intestinal ultrastructural alterations with variable degrees among HIV infected children, some of them in our knowledge not described before.

The aim of this study was to obtain data on the morphology and morphometry of pre-ovigerous and post-ovigerous adults of the species Tanaisia (Paratanaisia) bragai, using confocal laser scanning microscopy to obtain tomographic images of the suckers and tegument. For morphometric analysis, 45 specimens (30 pre-ovigerous adults and 15 post-ovigerous adults) were measured with the aid of an ocular micrometer coupled to the objective of a photonic microscope. Pre-ovigerous and post-ovigerous adult individuals, stained with Mair carmalumen and mounted in permanent preparations, were analyzed by means of confocal laser scanning microscopy. Positive correlation was detected between the body length and ovary length of post-ovigerous adults (rs: 0.774; p<0.01), as well as between the body length and testes (rs: 0.604 and 0.659; p< 0.05), the body length and the length of uterus (rs: 0.839; p< 0,01) and between the ovary width and egg length (rs: 0.777; p<0.01). Morphological study of the pre-ovigerous adults demonstrated that the ovary and testes develop simultaneously before the development of the uterus and vitelline glands. The acetabulum was detected in pre-ovigerous adults stained with hematoxilin and observed using light microscopy. In these specimens, the acetabulum measured 36.7 ± 6.9 µm (25-50 µm) in width and 39.91 ± 6.8 µm (25-55 µm) in length. The acetabulum was not detected in post-ovigerous adults observed with light microscopy. However, this structure was detected using confocal miscrocopy. In the post-ovigerous specimens, the acetabulum presented a reduced size compared to the pre-ovigerous adults. This may imply that this structure has more functional significance in the larval and pre-ovigerous stages.

Objective. To characterize morphologically and ultrastructurally using light microscopy, the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy the intima synovial of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of human fetuses between the 10th and the 38th week of development. Materials and Methods. The TMJ was dissected bilaterally in 37 human fetuses belonging to the Institute of Embryology of the University Complutense of Madrid and of the Federal University of São Paulo. Results. The outcome by light microscopy showed the morphology of the TMJ and that the formation of inferior joint cavity precedes the superior joint cavity and the presence of blood vessels in the synovial. Conclusion. By scanning and transmission electron microscopy we observed the presence of two well-defined cell types in the intima layer of synovial of the TMJ of human fetuses, macrophage-like type A cell and fibroblast-like type B cell, and the presence of the a third cell type, defined by the name of intermediate lining cell in the intima layer of the synovial.

Abstract This study discloses the characteristic features of the modified low-cycle fatigue test used for the determination of the mechanical properties of two types of cast iron, i.e. EN-GJL-250 and EN-GJS-600-3. For selected materials, metallographic studies were also conducted in the range of light microscopy and scanning microscopy.
