While requirements engineering has received considerable attention inacademia over the past years, formalization of requirements for physicallyinfluenced systems is still a difficult task in practice. In this paper, we giveformal representations of some typical requirement classes arising in theautomotive industry. We divide these patterns into three main classes:those mostly referring to properties of continuous signals, those mostlyreferring to discrete events and those referring to similarity to a referencesignal. We discuss these patterns on concrete examples from automotiveembedded systems, where specifications are used for test case generation.

It is sometimes assumed that formal representation of language are abstractions and that they contrast with the concreteness of empirical neurobiological measures. It is argued that this is not so and that, moreover, the formal representations adopted in linguistics are also detectable by providing the right stimulus to the subjects at the neurobiological level; one example is given by the asymmetry of constituent structure.

Integrity constraints (or simply “constraints”) are formal representations of invariant conditions for the semantic correctness of database records. Constraints can be expressed in declarative languages such as datalog, predicate logic, or SQL. This article highlights the historical background of integrity constraints and the essential features of their simplified incremental evaluation. It concludes with an outlook on future trends.
