Management of the ovine oestrous cycle is mainly based on the use of exogenous hormones to mimic or enhance (progesterone and its analogues) or manipulate (prostaglandin F2α and its analogues) the activity of the corpus luteum, combined with the application of other hormones mimicking the pituitary secretion of gonadotrophins (e.g. equine chorionic gonadotrophin). These protocols have been applied without major change for decades but, now, there are two reasons to reconsider them: (1) our greatly improved knowledge of the dynamics of ovarian physiology, following the application of transrectal ultrasonography, indicates that modification of the protocols may improve fertility yields and (2) increasing concerns about animal health and welfare, food safety and the environmental impact of the treatments, as evidenced by public opinion and therefore market forces. Here, we offer an overview of these issues, introduce an updated protocol and suggest ways for future improvements to the protocols.

The environmental effects of innovative technology in agriculture, whether in the wake of fertilizer practice, crop protection or changes in farming systems have received, over the past ten years, the attention which, in retrospect, should have been accorded them in earlier decades. Laboratory and small-plot techniques have been devised which can give early warning of undesirable effects, while field observations over a number of years monitor the possibility of long-term problems arising.

The word refugia appears commonly in the veterinary literature in relation to anthelmintic resistance, however it has its origins in ecology and crop protection. In the context of veterinary therapeutics, the reduction in exposure of target parasites, essentially through fewer treatments, can have bystander benefits too for non-target organisms, thus reducing the potential for environmental impact. Large refugia are intrinsic features of some livestock systems, for example extensive beef suckler farms, where treatments are typically infrequent, however on lowland sheep farms for instance, parasiticide treatments are typically more frequent and may involve both lambs and ewes, so management may need to be changed, for example through targeted selective treatment (TST), in order to enhance the refugia. Precision livestock farming and pen-side diagnostics can facilitate and extend the adoption of TST and other methods of refugia management.

With population growth, huge waste is generated every day. Widely used plastics, advanced technology and other materialistic things. This has led to different characteristics of the waste, which has become a difficult problem for the management and disposal of household waste. The article addresses food safety issues. The main objective of the study is to review the implementation of the program for the disposal and disposal of waste. The problem of partial utilization of household waste is relevant, first of all, from the point of view of negative environmental impact.

This report presents the result of a survey to evaluate the use of crop protection chemicals (pesticides – HCBVTV) in rice-growing areas with dyke, semi-dyke and no embankment based on interview result with 112 interviewers such as farmers, agricultural specialists, and pesticide dealers in Thap Muoi District, Dong Thap Province and pesticide usage data recorded by three selected framers in 3 different dyke systems. It showed that dyke practice affects the use of pesticides of farmers. After  dykes constructed, the pesticides used were more diverse, with higher dosage compared to before having embankments. The report also evaluates the risk of using pesticides through Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) index. It showed that areas with dyke and semi-dyke have much higher EIQ index than areas without embankment, 167, 145 and 54, respectively.

The fresh-cut industry supplies the food market with healthy fresh fruit and vegetables and, in that way, may contribute to improve the nutritional status of the general population. On the other hand, over the last few years increasing concerns have been raised regarding the environmental impact of the fresh-cut industry, human health risks from exposure to disinfection by-products found in fresh-cut products and chlorine-based disinfection treatments during produce processing. This review provides a comprehensive view of the main interlinked aspects related to food safety and environmental impact of processing of fresh-cut vegetables. Advantages and downsides of the mainstream disinfection strategy, based on the use of chlorine-related disinfecting agents, along with some alternative treatments close to a wide commercial application, are discussed. Limitation in the application of these strategies to processing of organic fresh-cut produce are also highlighted, examining the specific environmental and food safety problems in the organic sector. Areas where lack of available information hinders at present a clear understanding of priorities of research and action are pointed out. Innovative conceptual tools are proposed to address these multiple and interlinking issues and to overcome limitations of currently available technologies. A comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach is suggested to move toward a more safe and environmentally sustainable production of fresh-cut products.
