ABSTRACTRice production in the upland can be increased by multiple cropping system and coconut shell wood vinegar application. The objectives of this study was to know the effects of intercropped rice–grass with application of coconut shell wood vinegar on characters of growth, physiological, and yield of upland rice as well as intensity of pest and disease under drought condition. Split split plot design with main plot of upland rice varieties i.e. Situ Bagendit, Inpago Unsoed 1 and Situ Patenggang, sub plot consist of coconut shell wood vinegar concentration i.e. 0, 1:100 and 1:200, sub sub-plot of rice–grass intercropped i.e. no grass, Pennisetum purpureum, lemongrass and Pennisetum purpureum+lemongrass were tested with three replications. Observed variables were plant height, leaf number, leaf area, number of tillers, contents of proline, chlorophyll a and b, weight of grain in effective plot, weight of grain ha-1, harvest index and intensity of pest and disease. The results showed that rice-grass intercropped and application of coconut shell wood vinegar in drought condition has not been able to produce the optimal production. Under drought condition, intercropped rice-grass had significantly impact on the character of growth and yield of the upland rice. Generally, all upland rice varieties gained low yield (<1 t ha-1), but Situ Patenggang variety showed higher yield than other varieties and low intensity of brownhopper attack as well as in rice-lemongrass intercropped.

The intensive application of synthetic/inorganic fertilizer on shallot cultivation tends to contaminate the environment and reduce soil quality. Meanwhile, the decrease of farmland area has been a limiting factor in increasing shallot production. Shallot farmers in Bantul District, D. I. Yogyakarta, commonly combine organic and inorganic fertilizers. Therefore, an alternative technology to sustain the production of shallot is through the application of fertilizer at the right rates and  the practice of multiple cropping system. The objective of this research was to determine the growth and yield of shallot as affected by the reduced rates of inorganic fertilizer in multiple cropping systems. This research was conducted from August to November 2016 in Srigading Village, Sanden Sub-District, Bantul District, D. I. Yogyakarta. The research was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plot was cropping system consisting of monoculture system (shallot) and multiple cropping system (shallot – chili). The subplot was fertilizer rates consisting of 100 % as control, 50 %, and 25 %. The results of this research showed that multiple cropping system did not decrease the growth and yield of shallot. Likewise, reducing inorganic fertilizer rates to 50% of control did not decrease shallot yield. However,  the inorganic fertilizer rate of 25% significantly decreased shallot yield to 12.15 %.

[CHANGE IN SOIL CHARATERISTICS AND PERFORMANCE OF UPLAND RICE VARIETIES IN COASTAL AREA AS AMENDED WITH BIOFERTILIZER AND BIOCOMPOST]. Dryland in the coastal area has good potential for the cultivation of upland rice to reach food self-sufficiency and the development of future agriculture. Low fertility of the land the area can be overcome by using appropriate technology such as the use of superior varieties, bio-fertilizers, and bio compost. This study aimeds to (1) determine chemical and biological properties of coastal land to improve the growth of upland rice (2) find out the growth of upland rice in the coastal area using low input technology and (3) obtain upland rice varieties with high adaptability to a coastal area environment. The experimental design used was a split-plot design with the main plot of 3 upland rice varieties, namely Inpago 10, Serantan, and Local Variety, while the subplots are were fertilizer inputs namely [double inoculant P solubilized microbial p (pf) + K solubilized microbially + N fixation microbial N], [double inoculant P solubilized microbial (fma) + K solubilized microbially + N fixation micarobia], [biocompost at a dose of 10 tons/ha], and [inorganic fertilizer recommended by BPTP ie 200 kg Urea/ha, 100 kg SP36/ha, 100 kg KCl/ha]. The results showed that the coastal area has the potential for the development of upland rice cultivation. Also, the double inoculants of biological fertilizers were able to increase plant nutrient uptake, soil biological characteristics, and the growth of upland rice as compared to controls. Specifically, the best treatment is produced by application of [double inoculant microbial solvent p (pf) + microbial solvent K + microbial N fixation] combined with upland rice Inpago variety 10.

Thirteen traditional upland rice varieties (Kadidit Pilit, Red 64, Masipag 9, Masipag 15, Dinorado, Mindoro, Camuros, Masipag 22, Palawan, Suleg, Biday, Pilit , Pilit Talacdan) were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in three replicates at the experimental area of Central Philippines State University (CPSU), Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental from November 2012 - April 2013. The parameters compared were their agronomic data on growth and yield, including grain characteristics. These data were processed using the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the Statistical Tool for Agricultural Research (STAR) (Version 2.0.1) while Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) were used to compare significant treatment means at 1% level. The upland rice varieties showed significant variation in growth, yield showed distinct grain characteristics. Biday variety was the tallest, produced longer and wider leaves, and bore the longest panicle. Mindoro and Masipag 22 produced the most number of tillers. Pilit talacdan had the biggest culm, produced the heaviest panicle, with the highest number of filled grains per panicle. Pilit variety gave the heaviest weight of 1,000 grains. The grain features were also found to be distinct in each variety. The yield significantly varied among the upland rice varieties. Pilit and Pilit Talacdan gave the highest yield among the varieties grown at CPSU condition. The performing varieties would be used for upland rice improvement and breeding program and for further verification in the farmer’s field.

Swampland plays a critical function in agriculture, specifically in growing rice production. The study aimed to determine the effects of cropping systems and varieties on the rice growth and yield in acid sulfate soil of tidal swampland. The experiment was conducted in a potential acid sulphate soils in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan Province. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plot consisted of three HYV’s of rice, namely Inpara 8, Inpari 32, and Margasari. The subplot consisted of five cropping systems, namely, Jarwo 2:1A, Jarwo 2:1B, Jarwo 2:1C, Hazton, and Tegel.  The plot size was 4 m x 5 m. The variables observed included initial soil properties, plant growth, and yield components. The jajar legowo cropping system in this study was not able to increase rice yields in acid sulphate soil.  There was an interaction effect of cropping systems and varieties on the plant height and number of tillers at vegetative phase. At generative and pre-harvest phases, there was significant single effect of variety and cropping system in the planting height and number of tillers, respectively. Both cropping system and variety significantly affected the number of panicles per hill, while panicle length, grain per panicle and grain yield were only affected by variety.  There was no significant effect of both factors on the number of filled grains per panicle.  Inpara 8 variety achieved the highest grain yield, which was 6.78 ton.ha-1 or equivalent to 4.34 ton.ha-1 of 14 % water content.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen (N) is a major lacking nutrient element for the growth and yield of cereal crops Calabar, it is necessary to determine the response different sources and rates of N  in four varieties of upland  rice. Treatments comprised factorial combinations of the four rice varieties (NERICA 1, NERICA 2, FARO 45, FARO 48), three straight inorganic N sources (urea, Calcium ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate) and four levels of N (0, 30, 60, 90 kg N ha-1) laid in randomized complete block design. The N was split applied twice; one-third at the beginning of tillering and the remainder at panicle initiation. The results showed that the source of fertilizer N did not affect significantly the growth and yield of the rice crop (p=0.05). Considering that soils in Calabar are acid sands it will not be advisable to consistently apply such acidifying fertilizers as ammonium sulphate or urea except with soil liming which will undoubtedly increase the cost of production and probably make it unprofitable to cultivate rice in the area. The fertilized crop grew taller and produced more biomass compared with the control. It also produced significantly more tillers hill-1, panicles m-2, grains panicle-1, weight of 1,000 grains and grain yield. However, whereas NERICA 1, NERICA 2 and FARO 45 were more responsive to lower N levels, the grain yield of FARO 48 was significantly higher when the crop received 90 kg N ha-1 compared with other varieties, probably because of its longer growth duration in the field.  The responsiveness of these varieties to low N application was the result of their higher grain yield resulting from enhanced N use efficiency. Genotypes that were most responsive to low N input levels were early maturing with high N-use efficiencies. On the basis of grain yield, it is recommended that for  high yield in the humid region of Cross River State, N should be applied at the rate of  60 kg ha-1 for early-  and 90 kg ha-1 or above for the medium-maturing upland rice varieties. Abstract. Nasrudin, Kurniasih B. 2021. The agro-physiological characteristics of three rice varieties affected by water depth in the coastal agricultural land of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3656-3662. Coastal agricultural land has many obstacles of abiotic stress for plant cultivation, including waterlogging, strong wind, and high salt concentration. Therefore, the use of adaptive rice varieties, as well as good land management, are expected to be a solution for rice cultivation in the coastal agricultural land. The objective of this study was to examine the agro-physiological characteristics of three rice varieties planted in coastal agricultural land which were affected by water salinity up to more than 10 dS m-1. This study was conducted from February to July 2017 at Tirtohargo, Bantul District, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design, with the depths of sunken-bed as a main plot consisted of 25 cm and 50 cm, and variety as a subplot consisted of IR 64, Inpara 4, and Dendang. The experiment results showed that Dendang had the highest growth and yield in coastal agricultural land compared to Inpara 4 and IR64. The highest value is indicated in plant height, leaf area, proline content, and productivity. The depths 50 cm of sunken-bed increased leaf area and proline content, whereas the depths of 25 cm sunken-bed increased productivity. Dendang showed better agro-physiological activity and had the highest productivity. The depths of 50 cm increased several parameters in agro-physiological characteristics, however, the depths of 25 cm increased grain yield. Among the varieties tested, in salinity, the highest growth and yield variables were shown by Dendang, followed by IR 64 and Inpara 4.
