Specific Heat Linear Term in YBa2Cu3O7−x and a Survey of Related Compounds

ABSTRACTWe have measured the specific heat, C, in the temperature range 0.3 to 20K and in magnetic fields up to 12 Tesla of several compounds related to the high-Tc superconductors. The linear term in C for YBa2Cu3O7−x is only weakly dependent on oxygen concentration in the range 0 ≤ × ≤ 0.7. The linear term in C changes by less than 10% at 10 Tesla for La1.98Sr.02CuO4, whereas for YBa2Cu3O7−x it is obscured by additional field-dependent structure. Magnetic ordering anomalies are observed in YBa2Cu2O5 at 10.6 K and in BaCuO2+6 at 9.3 K.

We performed low-temperature specific heat measurements on slightly underdoped samples of monolayer cuprate superconductors [Formula: see text] (Ln = La, Eu, Ln-Bi2201) under magnetic fields [Formula: see text]. In La-Bi2201, the coefficient [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text]-linear term in the electronic specific heat [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text] shows [Formula: see text] dependence, as expected in [Formula: see text] -wave superconductors. In Eu-Bi2201, [Formula: see text] shows almost the same [Formula: see text] dependence as that of La-Bi2201 below [Formula: see text] T, while [Formula: see text] is suppressed above [Formula: see text] T and deviates downward from the [Formula: see text] curve of La-Bi2201. This result suggests the the gap and the electronic excitation spectrum near nodes are modified in Eu-Bi2201 except the region of the Fermi surface in the immediate vicinity of nodes.


The specific heats of plutonium and neptunium metal have been measured from 13 and 7.5 K respectively, to 300 K. Both metals have very high electronic specific heats of 15.9 and 14.2 mJ mol -1 K -2 . A small anomaly in plutonium at about 60 K was found and is possibly caused by magnetic ordering. The specific heat of neptunium is a smooth function over the whole temperature range.

We show specific heat data in magnetic fields to B = 8T on new polycrystals with different oxygen content and compare them with earlier results. The analysis reveals a field dependent residual linear term which is discussed within theoretical models of Bulaevskii and for a spin-glass.

Oxygen molecules are paramagnetic while nitrogen molecules are diamagnetic. In the same gradient magnetic field, the magnetizing forces on oxygen molecules are stronger than those on nitrogen molecules, which in opposite directions. The intercepting effect on oxygen molecules by gradient magnetic field can be used for oxygen enrichment from air. The structure, which is called multi-channel cascading magnets array frame in the paper, are optimized by additional yokes. By comparison of distributions of magnetic field in multi-channel array without yokes and that with yokes, the additional yokes can eliminate the differences among different magnetic spaces in multi-channel cascading magnets’ arrays and enhances the magnetic flux densities in spaces. Joining magnets together in the length direction can make the air stay longer in the ‘magnetic sieve’ and raise the oxygen concentration of air flowing out from the optimized multi-channel cascading magnets’ arrays. The inside additional yoke can used to avoid the gradient magnetic field at the joints of the magnets and get near uniform magnetic field along length direction. The optimized multi-channel cascading magnets’ array frames can effectively promote the development of oxygen enrichment from air by “magnetic sieve”.
