ABSTRACTOur main approach to the synthesis and study of hybrid organic/inorganic materials involves incorporating nano-size inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) clusters into various polymeric resins. A typical POSS cluster is a discrete silicon and oxygen framework solubilized with organic groups and contains a single reactive site. This lone site of reactivity is used to covalently attach the inorganic macromers pendent to a polymer backbone without causing any crosslinking. This strategy permits the synthesis of melt processable, linear hybrid polymers containing pendent inorganic clusters, and allows us to study the effect these clusters have on chain motion, polymer properties and morphology. The synthesis of norbornenyl-based (POSS) macromers, their ring opening metathesis copolymerizations with varying amounts of norbornene, and analysis of the effect of the pendent POSS group is presented. Ring opening metathesis polymerization permits the easy synthesis of both random and diblock copolymers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly images POSS-rich domains against the POSS-free regions. Major differences in polymer morphology are observed as the amount of inorganic POSS is varied, between random and diblock copolymers, as well as between polymers that differ only in the solubilizing cycloalkyl groups on the POSS cluster.

Under Karstedt’s catalyst, an organic–inorganic hybrid fluorescent nano-molecular dendrimer has been synthesized by grafting silafluorene units onto the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core through hydrosilylation reaction. The new hybrid molecule exhibits high solid fluorescence quantum efficiency because of the nano-size and large steric hindrance of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the thermal stability of the target compound is effectively improved by the presence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane.

The SiC nanoparticles (NPs) were sonochemically coated with OctaIsobutyl (OI) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) to create a compatible interface between particle and thermoset polymer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to analyze the structure of OI-POSS coated SiC nanoparticles. These results revealed the formation of a covalent bonding between SiC and OI-POSS. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of OI-POSS coated SiC nanoparticles has also shown the indication of attachment between these two nanoparticles. The OI-POSS coated SiC nanoparticles were further reinforced into a thermoset resin system in order to evaluate mechanical and thermal properties of nanocomposites. The flexural strength, modulus, and glass transition temperature were found to be enhanced while SiC and OI-POSS coated SiC were infused into epoxy system compared to those properties of neat epoxy resin.

A series of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were produced by bulk polymerization. The morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA). Results show that the octa(3-chloropropyl)-POSS (ocp-POSS) and trisilanolphenyl-POSS (triol-POSS) have high compatibility with PMMA and can be uniformly dispersed into PMMA matrix. The separate incorporation of these two types of POSS contributes to the improvement of thermal stability of PMMA composites. When the content of POSS was 7.5 wt%, the thermal decomposition temperatures (5% mass loss) of PMMA composites with ocp-POSS and triol-POSS were increased by about 104 °C and 130 °C, respectively. The increase of triol-POSS content in the PMMA matrix gave slight enhanced storage modulus before glass transition.
