By continuous-pump Z-scanning, the nonlinear light absorption of aqueous and alcohol solutions of methylene blue was studied. It was shown that the mechanisms of optical nonlinearity of these solutions vary depending on the dye concentration and type of solvent. The dependence of the amplitude of nonlinear absorption of dye molecules on the concentration and sign of the surface charge of gold and silver nanoparticles in solution is revealed. Mathematical models of optical nonlinearity for concentrated and diluted solutions of dye molecules are considered; in the latter case, the influence of plasmon nanoparticles on the nonlinear optical characteristics of methylene blue solutions is taken into account

The nonlinear-optical and optical limiting properties of 2(3), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24) phenoxy-phthalocyanines have been investigated using a 10-ns-pulse laser at 532 nm. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) is measured by the single beam Z-scan technique. We have observed low power optical limiting, with low limiting thresholds, based on nonlinear absorption in the sample. These studies indicate that the phthalocyanine material is a potential candidate for low power optical limiting applications.

This work presents the analysis of experimental data on studies of optical and nonlinear optical properties of lyotropic ionic liquid crystals of potassium caprylate doped with electrochromic viologen admixtures, and smectic glasses of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals of cobalt alkanoates homologous series (number of carbon atoms in alkanoate chain n = 7, 9, 11) and their multicomponent mixtures. Prior to performing nonlinear optical experiment the optical absorption spectra for all samples were investigated. Laser induced dynamic grating recording under the action of nanosecond laser pulses was realized, observed and analyzed for the proposed absorptive media. It was discovered that studied materials are characterized by cubic optical nonlinearity and have values of cubic nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) and hyperpolarizability γ comparable with the best characteristics of organic dyes. The possible mechanism of nonlinear response in studied systems was considered on the base of obtained data. The nonlinear response mechanism is connected with nonlinear polarization of π-electrons in the field of laser radiation.

Abstract Liquid crystal cells based on lithium niobate substrates have recently been proposed as good candidates for optofluidic devices and for light-induced controlled generation of defects in liquid crystal films. The peculiarity of these structures lies in the possibility of using the bulk photovoltaic effect of lithium niobate to obtain an optically induced dc field able to affect the molecular liquid crystal director. Reversible fragmentation and self-assembling of liquid crystal droplets driven by the lithium niobate pyroelectric properties have also been reported. We review the basic results obtained so far with the aim of making the point and seeing what else can be done in the framework of the realization of hybrid structures combining lithium niobate with the electro-optical and nonlinear optical properties of liquid crystals.

Free base porphyrin in chloroform solution irradiated with focused laser beam, in an open Z-scan set-up, changed color from purple to green, which was associated with protonation of the porphyrin with protonic species from photodegradation of the solvent. Protonation is demonstrated as a simple means to improve the optical limiting performance of free base porphyrin nonlinear optical (NLO) materials.
