ABSTRACTWe present the synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline II-VI semiconductors of mixed composition (CdSe/ZnSe, CdS) grown in fatty acid Langmuir-Schaefer multi-layer templates. The controlled production of i) homogeneous nanocrystalline CdxZn1−xSe alloys and ii) heterogeneous mixtures of different pure composition II-VI semiconductors such as CdSe and ZnSe provides, in addition to the size control, the parameter of the chemical composition for the fine tuning of the electronic properties. The samples are characterized bty optical and quasi-resonance micro-Raman spectroscopy.

We report the synthesis and characterization of iptycene–naphthazarin dyes by using a sequential Diels–Alder approach. The tautomerization of naphthazarin was used as the key step in the synthesis, with structures confirmed by single-crystal X-ray and NMR analysis. The systematic trends in electronic properties were investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy. BF2 complexes of the dyes were prepared by reaction with BF3·OEt2 in CH2Cl2.

Non-stoichiometric Co2FeAl nanoparticles are formed by the in-solution thermal decomposition of the corresponding metal acetylacetonate complexes in the presence of capping ligands followed by reduction of the obtained material under an H2-containing atmosphere. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that sub-100 nm nanoparticles are obtained, with reasonable size control. Magnetic measurements indicate that the saturation magnetization, Bloch behavior, magnetization reversal, spin-wave stiffness, and exchange stiffness are all comparable to those observed for bulk and thin-film Co2FeAl, indicating that these nanomaterials are promising for use in nanoparticle-based spintronic devices.

Micro-Raman spectroscopy has been applied to fibrous minerals regulated as “asbestos”—anthophyllite, actinolite, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, and chrysotile—responsible of severe diseases affecting mainly, but not only, the respiratory system. The technique proved to be powerful in the identification of the mineral phase and in the recognition of particles of carbonaceous materials (CMs) lying on the “asbestos” fibers surface. Also, erionite, a zeolite mineral, from different outcrops has been analyzed. To erionite has been ascribed the peak of mesothelioma noticed in Cappadocia (Turkey) during the 1970s. On the fibers, micro-Raman spectroscopy allowed to recognize many grains, micrometric in size, of iron oxy-hydroxides or potassium iron sulphate, in erionite from Oregon, or particles of CMs, in erionite from North Dakota, lying on the crystal surface. Raman spectroscopy appears therefore to be the technique allowing, without preparation of the sample, a complete characterization of the minerals and of the associated phases.
