ABSTRACTMachine parts like rolling bearings or gears are stressed during operation in a changing mechanical strain. This causes wear by impacts and wear by rolling which is marked by the so called surface ruin. The appearance of surface fatigue is based upon structural transformation, cracking and cracking-growth processes and ends with the separation of debris particles caused by the above mentioned permanent changing strain /1/. The final stage, which is equivalent to the component failure, is the so called ‘pitting’ on the technical surface, which is characteristically named ‘surface fatigue’.The impact tester is used for detailed research about failure mechanisms of thin films. Statements about the adherence of hard material coatings under dynamic compressive stress can be made using this test method, due to the possibility to simulate some effects of rolling strain. Therefore a hard metal ball strikes with a frequency of up to 50 Hz onto the surface. The altitude stress can be varied to get a detailed evaluation of fatigue strength under reversal strain.Selected hard material coatings were analized after testing with the described method applying an impact force of 300 N, 500 N and 700 N. In the framework of this presentation MSIP (Magnetron-Sputter-lon-Plating) coatings on titanium- and chromium basis were used. The fatigue defects and the results of this study will be discussed depending on structure and morphology of thin films.

During the operation of reciprocating compressors, the flapper valve opens and closes under fluid pressure and flow. As it closes, it strikes against the valve seat, generating stresses and noise. This cycle of loading produces bending and impact fatigue stresses in the reed. This load pattern is repeated billions of times during the service life of a compressor and it defines the service life and reliability. The goal of this study was to calculate the impact fatigue strength of the Flap-X and the SS 716 grades and, to provide the compressor manufacturers with the information they can use to specify a steel grade to be used in their compressors, for reliable service. Impact fatigue tests were conducted on a custom-built impact fatigue test rig that used air pulses to produce movement of the reed valves manufactured by a major European compressor manufacturer Nidec Global appliance GmbH, at a frequency of 315 Hz and pulse width of 2,2 milliseconds. The testing was conducted according to the staircase test method detailed in the International Standard SS-ISO 12107:2012. The impact fatigue strength of the Flap-X and SS 716 steel valves was calculated in terms of the impact velocity according to the modified staircase test method in the standard. The test results and their statistical analysis showed that the impact fatigue strength of the Flap-X grade was higher compared to the SS 716 grade. The calculation and testing of the impact fatigue strength of the flapper valve steel grades could help the compressor designers to select the optimum material for their compressor designs, to provide reliable service. The higher impact fatigue strength of the Flap-X grade, lower failure rate and longer impact fatigue life will allow the compressor manufacturers to design thinner valves, as Flap-X can sustain higher impact fatigue stresses reliably for longer time and, at the same time help reduce noise, as thinner valves produce less noise for a given pressure and frequency.

The impact test has been used for several years, among others, for characterizing the fatigue strength, creep, adhesion and residual stresses of coatings at ambient and elevated temperatures under dry or lubricated conditions. A major advantage of this test method is that in many cases, it can be employed directly on the coated parts and not on specimens. The obtained experimental results are evaluated by convenient finite element method (FEM)-supported algorithms. Based on these algorithms, critical data for predicting the life span of coated parts such as cutting tools and bearings and for planning appropriate replacements can be obtained. The paper provides an overview of the development of impact test devices, experimental techniques and result evaluation methods. Characteristic examples highlighting the quantification of the fatigue strength of PVD (Phyical Vapour Deposition) coatings and their adhesion via the critical equivalent and shear stresses, respectively, as well as that of the temperature-dependent interfacial fatigue strength of diamond coatings via the critical shear stress, are shown.

Foams are widely used in protective applications requiring high energy absorption under impact, and evaluating impact properties of foams is vital. Therefore, a novel test method based on a shock tube was developed to investigate the impact properties of closed-cell polyethylene (PE) foams at strain rates over 6000 s−1, and the test theory is presented. Based on the test method, the failure progress and final failure modes of PE foams are discussed. Moreover, energy absorption capabilities of PE foams were assessed under both quasi-static and high strain rate loading conditions. The results showed that the foam exhibited a nonuniform deformation along the specimen length under high strain rates. The energy absorption rate of PE foam increased with the increasing of strain rates. The specimen energy absorption varied linearly in the early stage and then increased rapidly, corresponding to a uniform compression process. However, in the shock wave deformation process, the energy absorption capacity of the foam maintained a good stability and exhibited the best energy absorption state when the speed was higher than 26 m/s. This stable energy absorption state disappeared until the speed was lower than 1.3 m/s. The loading speed exhibited an obvious influence on energy density.

The effect of micro-notches on the fatigue strength of nickel thin films was studied. Two types of thin films with 10 μm thickness were produced by electrodeposition using sulfamate solution without and with brightener: ultra-fine grained film (UFG) with the grain size of 384 nm and nano-crystalline grained film (NCG) with that of 17 nm. Micro-sized notches introduced by FIB had the width of 2 μm and various depths from 8 to 150μm. Fatigue tests were conducted under the stress ratio of 0.1. The fatigue strength decreased with increasing depth of notches. NCG had much higher strength than UFG compared at the same notch depth. Notches as small as 8μm did reduce the fatigue strength of both UFG and NCG. The fatigue limit was controlled by the initiation of cracks and no non-propagating crack was observed in specimens fatigued below the fatigue limit. A model of fictitious crack successfully predicted the reduction of the fatigue limit due to micro-notches. The characteristic crack length of NCG was much smaller than the UFG, while the fatigue strength of defect-free NCG was larger than that of UFG. SEM observation of fracture surfaces was conducted to reveal micromechanisms of fatigue crack initiation.

AbstractOil leak from vehicles is one of the most common pollution types of the road. The spilled oil could be retained on the surface and spread in the air voids of the road, which results in a decrease in the friction coefficient of the road, affects driving safety, and causes damage to pavement materials over time. Photocatalytic degradation through nano-TiO2 is a safe, long-lasting, and sustainable technology among the many methods for treating oil contamination on road surfaces. In this study, the nano-TiO2 photocatalytic degradation effect of road surface oil pollution was evaluated through the lab experiment. First, a glass dish was used as a substrate to determine the basic working condition of the test; then, a test method considering the impact of different oil erosion degrees was proposed to eliminate the effect of oil erosion on asphalt pavement and leakage on cement pavement, which led to the development of a lab test method for the nano-TiO2 photocatalytic degradation effect of oil pollution on different road surfaces.

The double-stranded B-form and A-form have long been considered the two most important native forms of DNA, each with its own distinct biological roles and hence the focus of many areas of study, from cellular functions to cancer diagnostics and drug treatment. Due to the heterogeneity and sensitivity of the secondary structure of DNA, there is a need for tools capable of a rapid and reliable quantification of DNA conformation in diverse environments. In this work, the second paper in the series that addresses conformational transitions in DNA thin films utilizing FTIR spectroscopy, we exploit popular chemometric methods: the principal component analysis (PCA), support vector machine (SVM) learning algorithm, and principal component regression (PCR), in order to quantify and categorize DNA conformation in thin films of different hydrated states. By complementing FTIR technique with multivariate statistical methods, we demonstrate the ability of our sample preparation and automated spectral analysis protocol to rapidly and efficiently determine conformation in DNA thin films based on the vibrational signatures in the 1800–935 cm−1 range. Furthermore, we assess the impact of small hydration-related changes in FTIR spectra on automated DNA conformation detection and how to avoid discrepancies by careful sampling.

A new soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) experiment contemplating urea concentration is presented in the paper. We focus on the impact of the SWCC considering urea concentration test method for materials selection and introduction, experimental results, and finally, we have conducted some experiments of SWCC and obtained some valuable data which could affect urea concentration. By using linear fitting, an exponential function between water content and suction and urea concentration is established.
