ABSTRACTA series of layered silicate-like structures with a wide range of Si/AI ratios that have an organic functionality directly bonded to the structural Si atom by Si-C bond were prepared by template sol-gel synthesis at room temperature and pressure. XRD patterns indicate that organic functionalities in the interlayers are in paraffin-like arrangement and do not interpenetrate. Structural ordering is primarily governed by the assembly of the organic functionalities into lamellar micelles. Nanocomposites were studied by solid state 29Si and 27AI NMR to determine the degree of condensation of inorganic framework. The results indicate that Si-O-Al linkages do not form in gels precipitated at low pH. Stable Si-O-Al linkages form when pH of the precipitates is raised. The highest degree of Si-O-Al bonding is obtained when Al solutions are prehydrolyzed prior to the addition of silane.

Using a wide range of state-of-the art analytical techniques and molecular dynamics simulation, a novel mechanism for macromolecular interactions are described. Distinct interactions between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks in amphiphilic triblock copolymers lead to an order-order transition from spherical micelles to worm-like micelles upon cooling the aqueous polymer solutions below room temperature. Macroscopically, this this leads to reversible gelation. This novel mechanism represent a novel building block to better understand polymer self-assembly.<br>

The aim of this study was to investigate the sol gel synthesis of HA/FA nanoparticles and the possible formation of TCP phase or unstoichiometric calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) from the precursors with a Ca/P ratio of 1.62. In order to prepare the sol, the solutions of Triethyl phosphite, ammonium fluoride and calcium nitrate in ethanol were used respectively as P, F and Ca precursors. The crystallinity, particle and crystallite size, powder morphology, chemical structure and phase analysis were investigated by SEM, XRD, FT-IR and Zeta sizer experiment. A multiphase compound containing hydroxyapatite (HA) and fluoroapatite (FA) nanoparticles and calcium deficient hudroxyapatite (CDHA) agglomerates was obtained. The size of the crystallites estimated from XRD patterns using Scherrer equation and the crystallinity of HA phase were about 5 nm and 66% respectively. The zeta sizer experiments for the dispersed particles in its own conditions showed an average size of 98 nm.

SiO2-Ag core-shell nanostructure with silica core (SiO2) and silver shell (Ag) nanoparticles with spherical morphology were successfully synthesized using a modified self-assembly sol-gel method. Ag nanoparticles at ca.10-50 nm were successfully attached on monodispersed silica spheres (SiO2) with diameter of ca. 450 nm. Renewable resources of palm oil, derived fatty alcohols (octyl-alcohol (C8), decyl-alcohol (C10) and dodecyl-alcohol (C12)) were employed as nonsurfactant surface modifiers prior to coating with Ag nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of calcined SiO2-Ag core-shell nanostructure prepared with surface modifiers exhibited amorphous structure of SiO2 (core) and face-centered cubic (FCC) structure of metallic Ag nanoparticles (shell). The results obtained in the present work demonstrated the feasibility of employing fatty alcohols as potential nonsurfactant surface modifiers in synthesizing SiO2-Ag core-shell.

AbstractThe aqueous sol-gel synthesis technique for the preparation of (Pb,Sr)Sr2(Y,Ca)Cu2O7±x (Pb-1212) and (Pb2,Cu)Sr2(Y,Ca)Cu2O8±x (Pb-3212) superconductors using two different complexing agents, namely 1,2-ethanediol and tartaric acid was studied. The phase transformations, composition and micro-structural features in the polycrystalline samples were studied by powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD analysis of the ceramic samples obtained by calcination of Pb-Sr-Y-Ca-Cu-O acetate-glycolate precursor gels in air, for 10 hours at 800°C and at 825°C, showed the presence of homogeneous Pb-1212 and Pb-3212 crystallites as major phases. The XRD patterns of the ceramics obtained from Pb-Sr-Y-Ca-Cu-O acetate-tartrate precursor gels, however, showed multiphasic character. The critical temperature of superconductivity (TC (onset)) observed by resistivity measurements were found to be 91 K and 75 K for Pb-1212 and Pb-3212 samples, respectively.
