ABSTRACTThe bioresorbable 10CaO·35Na2O·55P2O5 glass was nitrided by melting the glass under anhydrous ammonia. The nitrided glasses were fiberized at about 720 °C in air. The dynamic and the equilibrium pH value of the glass increases with the increase of nitrogen content. The incorporation of nitrogen not only increases the glass transition temperature, but also improves the chemical durability and makes it easier to fiberize. Further more, the nitrided glass is more resistant to devitrification.

The effect of coordination number on glass properties was investigated by measuring the glass forming region, glass transition temperature, dilatometric softening temperature, density and chemical durability of the glasses. The coordination number of B and Zn in the system 20BaO-xZnO-(80-x) B2O3 glasses (x=0~40mol%) was measured by IR, respectively. No change in the coordination number (CN) of B was revealed, and the coordination of Zn was 4 at ZnO 10mol%, which increased the properties of glasses. On the other hand, the coordination number (CN) of B and Zn changed from CN4 to CN3, CN4 to CN6 over ZnO 20 and 10mol% respectively, which decreased the properties of glasses.

Enthalpies of drop solution in molten 52 wt.% LiBO2-48 wt.% NaBO2 at 1078 K were measured for RE1.1Si1.7Al0.6O6-1.5xNx (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) glasses for RE = Nd, Gd, Dy, Er, and Y. Linear relations between enthalpies of formation from elements and nitrogen content indicate that, within the experimental composition range, sites occupied by nitrogen ions are approximately equivalent in energy for a given substitutional series. The energetics of different rare-earth SiAlON glasses appears to be dominated by differences in the acid/base character of the cations. The onset glass-transition temperature increases linearly with increasing nitrogen content for the same rare earth and with decreasing rare-earth ionic radius for the same nitrogen content.

AbstractIodide glasses presently being investigated suffer from their poor glass forming abilities, thermal instabilities and general lack of chemical durability. Glasses in the Cd-As-I and Cd-As-Ge-I systems are investigated in this study for the purpose of developing water-resistant, thermally stable iodide glasses and optical fibers. Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) showed that glasses in these systems have glass transition temperature(Tg) values above 300°C. Devitrification of glasses during cooling and reheating can be suppressed by incorporating small amount of Ge atoms into ternary Cd-As-I glasses. They are transparent up to 14μm in the infrared region with excellent durability against liquid water at 90°C.

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is considered as a high performance thermoplastic material and to be used in many areas, but the application of PPS used as protective clothing is limited because it is difficulties to be dyed and finished. In this work the effects of benzyl benzoate as a carrier on the structure and performance of PPS especially dyeability were evaluated. The glass transition temperature, crystalline structure and orientation degree of treated PPS fiber with benzyl benzoate were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction analysis and velocity-oriented tester. Adsorption thermodynamic and kinetic study of disperse dye on PPS treated with carrier was carried out under the condition of pH value 5, initial dye concentration 0.01–0.5 g/L and liquor ratio 1,000:1. The results indicated that benzyl benzoate, as a dyeing carrier, could reduce the glass transition temperature and orientation degree of treated PPS fiber. The benzyl benzoate could improve the standard affinity, diffusion coefficient and the equilibrium dyeing rate of disperse dye on PPS fiber, while the decrease of tensile strength was very little.

The glasses of the series (1-x)[0.5ZnO-0.1B2O3-0.4P2O5]-xMoO3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 were prepared by slow cooling of the melt. These glasses were characterized by the measurements of density, molar volume, chemical durability, glass transition temperature and the thermal expansion coefficient. The density and molar volume of the glasses increase with increasing MoO3 content. All glasses crystallize on heating and their crystallization temperature decreases with increasing MoO3 content. An incorporation of MoO3 into the parent borophosphate glass results in a substantial decrease of their glass transition temperature and also of their chemical durability. The observed changes were ascribed to the gradual replacement of stronger P-O-P bonds by weaker Mo- O-P and Mo-O-Mo bonds. ESR spectra revealed the presence of Mo5+ ions responsible for the blue colour of the glasses and the relative ratio of Mo5+/Mototal decreases with increasing MoO3 content.

The effect addition of Na2O on the solubility properties of phosphate glass of the composition, 45P2O5-18CaO-xNa2O-(34-x)K2O-6Al2O3, where x = 0,5,10,15 and 20 wt. %. has been studied. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of glass samples, weight loss and pH of the immersion solution were measured. The Tg value of the phosphate glass also decreased with the incorporation of Na2O up to 10 wt. % and increased with the incorporation of 15 and 20 wt. %. These results indicates that the solubility and Tg value of phosphate glass were highly influence by the glass composition. The substitution of Na2O to the phosphate glass system with the present of K2O has decrease the solubility of phosphate glass. The released of phosphate and calcium ion seem to decrease with the increasing of Na2O content in the glass composition.
