AbstractInteratomic potentials of the Embedded Atom type were used to study defect structure in ternary intermetallics. Interatomic potentials with appropriate inner consistency were developed for the modeling of ternary systems. Alloys were considered in the Nb-Al-Ti and in the Ni-Al-Ti systems. The stability of ternary phases in these systems was studied, particularly the B2 phase in Nb rich alloys of the Nb-Al-Ti system. The effects of increasing Ti additions in these alloys were studied, as well as the APB energies in these ternary alloys.

AbstractTwo different interatomic potentials of the embedded atom type were used to study the relationships between dislocation core structure and mobility. Core structures were computed for a variety of dislocations in B2 NiAl. Several non-planar cores were studied as they reacted to applied stress and moved. The results show that in some cases, the dislocation core transforms to a planar structure before the dislocation glides, whereas in some other cases the core retains the non-planar structure at stresses sufficient to sustain glide. The effects of stoichiometry deviations on the core structure and motion were also studied.

AbstractWe investigate the surface kinetics of Pt using the extended embedded-atom method, an extension of the embedded-atom method with additional degrees of freedom to include the nonbulk data from lower-coordinated systems as well as the bulk properties. The surface energies of the clean Pt (111) and Pt (100) surfaces are found to be 0.13 eV and 0.147 eV respectively, in excellent agreement with experiment. The Pt on Pt (111) adatom diffusion barrier is found to be 0.38 eV and predicted to be strongly strain-dependent, indicating that, in the compressive domain, adatoms are unstable and the diffusion barrier is lower; the nucleation occurs in the tensile domain. In addition, the dissociation barrier from the dimer configuration is found to be 0.82 eV. Therefore, we expect that atoms, once coalesced, are unlikely to dissociate into single adatoms. This essentially tells that by changing the applied strain, we can control the patterning of nanostructures on the metal surface.

The problem of obtaining a homogeneous composition of the coatings is reduced to the proper selection of film-forming agents, and diluent and, if appropriate, diluents and additives. On the basis of the theory of solubility, we have carried out the assessment of the compatibility of the components and stability of such systems. The evaluation criteria were adopted the parameters of the solubility and thermodynamic interaction. Researched the compatibility with alkyd varnishes aminoformaldehyde resin in butanol, and the results of these studies are presented in the triangular phase diagram. To evaluate the compatibility of the resins according to the results of calculation of thermodynamic parameters of interaction were built spinodal for ternary systems. As the analysis of the results of the studies, even when the difference ??|?12 – ?13| = 0,2 there is a small area of incompatibility. With the decrease of the difference ? ? region incompatibility narrows. When ?23> ?с region incompatibility extends to ?? = 0,2, and for ?? = 0.1 and ?? = 0. Thus, for such systems, compatibility of components, primarily, affects their interaction with each other – the further away it is, the better they are compatible. Studies have shown that the partial solubility parameters, which take into account the nature of cohesive forces, more objectively characterize the solubility of film-forming resins in organic solvents than their total solubility parameter. The solubility and film-forming aminoformaldehyde esterified alkyd resins in organic solvents due to thermodynamic interaction of molecular forces of different nature. Тhe stability of the mixture and aminoformaldehyde esterified alkyd resin in butanol is generated largely by thermodynamic forces of molecular interaction; the degree of butanolate melamine-formaldehyde resin has the greatest effect on the stability of the system. Conducted research on the stability of the paint mixtures of various film-forming resins on the basis of the evaluation criteria can be used to improve the technology of protective and decorative wood finish.

The aluminum–magnesium (Al–Mg) composite materials possess a large potential value in practical application due to their excellent properties. Molecular dynamics with the embedded atom method potentials is applied to study Al–Mg interface bonding during deformation-temperature treatment. The study of fabrication techniques to obtain composites with improved mechanical properties, and dynamics and kinetics of atom mixture are of high importance. The loading scheme used in the present work is the simplification of the scenario, experimentally observed previously to obtain Al–Cu and Al–Nb composites. It is shown that shear strain has a crucial role in the mixture process. The results indicated that the symmetrical atomic movement occurred in the Mg–Al interface during deformation. Tensile tests showed that fracture occurred in the Mg part of the final composite sample, which means that the interlayer region where the mixing of Mg, and Al atoms observed is much stronger than the pure Mg part.

ABSTRACTThe structure and elastic properties of Ni/Cu and Ni/Au multilayer systems are investigated as a function of the number of Ni monolayers built into the systems. We employed lattice statics simulations with the interatomic potentials described by the embedded-atom method. For the Ni/Cu systems, coherent interfaces and FCC structure are maintained, and no elastic anomaly is found. For the Ni/Au systems, when the Ni layers are thick enough, they undergo a strain-induced phase transformation from FCC to HCP structure. An enhancement of Young’s modulus of these systems is found to be associated with this structural change.

AbstractSimulation of the solid solutions in the system of double sodium–gadolinium and sodium–europium molybdates, which are promising matrices for solid state lasers and phosphors has been carried out by the method of interatomic potentials. Two types of solid solutions have been studied, one of which contains finite components corresponding to the stoichiometric NaGd(MoO_4)_2–NaEu(MoO_4)_2 compositions with statistical distribution of cations in the crystal lattice. Another object is a cation-deficient Na_2Gd_4(MoO_4)_7–Na_2Eu_4(MoO_4)_7 system, in which we have examined the variants of statistical distribution and partial ordering of cations over structural positions. Atomistic simulation has been performed using the GULP 4.0.1 software package (General Utility Lattice Program). It is shown that when we pass from sodium-gadolinium molybdate to sodium-europium molybdate, both of stoichiometric and cation-deficient compositions, an increase in the unit cell volume is observed, while the density of the crystal, the energy of interatomic interactions in the structure, the vibrational entropy and the heat capacity decrease along with increasing europium content. The energy of interatomic interactions in the structure for cation-deficient solid solutions is less than for stoichiometric ones. Other aforementioned characteristics for cation-deficient solid solutions have greater values than for stoichiometric ones. The role of cluster europium centers in concentration quenching in NaGd(MoO_4)_2–NaEu(MoO_4)_2 solid solutions has been examined.
