ABSTRACTWe have measured and analyzed optical absorption, Raman scattering and x-ray absorption spectra of CdS nanocrystals grown by solid-state reaction in a borosilicate glass. We observe the appearance and growth of an optical absorption peak which is attributed to CdS nanoparticles. Using x-ray absorption we quantify the progressive replacement of O nearest neighbors of Cd by S with heat treatment and the appearance and growth of a well-defined second nearest neighbor peak.

ABSTRACTMonosized and anisotropically capped CdS nanocrystals have the property to self-connect into a polymeric material. The viscosity of this fibrous material can be adjusted to fabricate texturized and homogeneous coatings. These films can be thermally converted into pure CdS films. Based on the size dependent band gap of this semiconductor, the absorbance of the film can be fine-tuned through the size of the particle-precursor or by controlling the film heat treatment. The evolution of the film nanostructure with temperature was investigated by optical absorption, DTA, SEM and X-ray diffraction techniques.

In order to study the microstructure of Fe – Ga alloy, Fe 85 Ga 15 ribbons prepared with different wheel velocity were studied by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) and extend X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). HRXRD patterns showed that only disordered A 2 phase was observed in as-cast Fe 85 Ga 15 alloy. A modified- DO 3 phase was detected in all of the melt spun samples. The HRXRD associated with EXAFS results indicated that Ga atoms were located as second-nearest neighbor along [100] orientation. A little DO 3 phase was found in ribbons annealed at 1000°C under 0.06 MPa Ar atmosphere. The result of magnetostriction measurement revealed that in the ribbon prepared with higher wheel velocity, more modified- DO 3 phase will enhance the magnetostriction. DO 3 phase in the annealed sample will deteriorate the magnetostrictive properties of Fe – Ga ribbons.

The germanium auto-diffusion effects on the inter-atomic distance between the nearest neighbors of the Ga atom in GaP epilayers are investigated using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The GaP layers grown on Ge (111) are structurally coherent and relaxed but they show the presence of residual strain which is attributed to the auto-diffusion of Ge from the results of secondary ion mass spectrometry and electrochemical capacitance voltage measurements. Subsequently, the inter-atomic distances between the nearest neighbors of Ga atom in GaP are determined from X-ray absorption fine-structure spectra performed at the Ga K-edge. The estimated local bond lengths of Ga with its first and second nearest neighbors show asymmetric variation for the in-plane and out-of-plane direction of GaP/Ge(111). The magnitude and direction of in-plane and out-of-plane microscopic residual strain present in the GaP/Ge are calculated from the difference in bond lengths which explains the presence of macroscopic residual tensile strain estimated from HRXRD. Modified nearest neighbor configurations of Ga in the auto-diffused GaP epilayer are proposed for new possibilities within the GaP/Ge hetero-structure, such as the conversion from indirect to direct band structures and engineering the tensile strain quantum dot structures on (111) surfaces.

The CdS nanoparticles of different sizes are synthesized by a simple chemical method. Here, CdS nanoparticles are grown through the reaction of solution of different concentration of CdCl2 with H2S. X-ray diffraction pattern confirms nano nature of CdS and has been used to determine the size of particle. Optical absorption spectroscopy is used to measure the energy band gap of these nanomaterials by using Tauc relation. Energy band gap ranging between 3.12 eV to 2.47 eV have been obtained for the samples containing the nanoparticles in the range of 2.3 to 6.0 nm size. A correlation between the band gap and size of the nanoparticles is also established.
