AbstractSterically hindered shear in a plane shock wave in an explosive crystal is shown to be important in determining the shock sensitivity of pentaerythritol tetranitrate and nitromethane. The steric hindrance is analyzed at the intermolecular level in the unit cell, and compared to the experimental evidence.
