ABSTRACTSilicon nitride based ceramics have unique combinations of mechanical, thermal-physical and electrical properties. Additionally, silicon nitride based materials can be fabricated into near net shape components by several processing routes. This unique combination of properties and processing versatility have encouraged the use of silicon nitride based ceramics in a variety of demanding commercial applications over the past decade. In the U.S., these applications currently include cutting tools, bearings, and selected components for diesel engines. Projected future applications include a broader range of reciprocating and gas turbine engine components, and electronic components. For each of these applications examples of use and the key properties of silicon nitride which enable enhanced systems performance will be discussed. Several materials developments which may broaden the range of applicability of silicon nitride based ceramics will be described.

ABSTRACTProgress in sintering process and improvement of mechanical properties of silicon nitride ceramics are reviewed. Emphases are placed on contributions of advanced sintering techniques and better understanding of sintering additives and microstructure-properties relations. Current applications as engine components and cutting tools are described, and future prospect is considered.

Recent advances in synthesis of titanium (Ti) alloy powders by direct reduction methods (meltless Ti) have led to new opportunities to produce Ti alloys with enhanced capabilities. The meltless Ti alloy powders can be consolidated into mill products, or used to manufacture near-net shape (NNS) components. A vision is outlined for creation of a new supply chain producing meltless Ti alloy powders, leading to the production and application of innovative turbine engine components. This paper highlights the benefits of meltless Ti alloys, details current assessment of meltless Ti alloy technology, and outlines some of the challenges to fully establish the new supply chain.

For over ten years, injection molding and slip casting have been actively developed as forming techniques for ceramic gas turbine components. Co-development of these two processes has continued within the U.S. DOE-sponsored Advanced Turbine Technology Application Project (ATTAP). Progress within ATTAP with respect to these two techniques is summarized. A critique and comparison of the two processes are given. Critical aspects of both processes with respect to size, dimensional control, material properties, quality, cost, and potential for manufacturing scale-up are discussed.

Abstract TIMETAL 829 is a Ti-5.5Al-3.5Sn-3Zr-1Nb-0.25Mo-0.3Si near-alpha titanium alloy that is weldable and has high strength and is a creep resistant high temperature alloy. The major application is as gas turbine engine components. This article provides a brief overview of novel drugs approved by the U.S. FDA in 2016.  It also focuses on the emerging boom in the development of neurodrugs for central nervous system (CNS) disorders. These new drugs are innovative products that often help advance clinical care worldwide, and in 2016, twenty-two such drugs were approved by the FDA. The list includes the first new drug for disorders such as spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy or hallucinations and delusions of Parkinson’s disease, among several others. Notably, nine of twenty-two (40%) were novel CNS drugs, indicating the industry shifting to neurodrugs. Neurodrugs are the top selling pharmaceuticals worldwide, especially in America and Europe. Therapeutic neurodrugs have proven their significance many times in the past few decades, and the CNS drug portfolio represents some of the most valuable agents in the current pipeline. Many neuroproducts are vital or essential medicines in the current therapeutic armamentarium, including dozens of “blockbuster drugs” (drugs with $1 billion sales potential).  These drugs include antidepressants, antimigraine medications, and anti-epilepsy medications. The rise in neurodrugs’ sales is predominantly due to increased diagnoses of CNS conditions. The boom for neuromedicines is evident from the recent rise in investment, production, and introduction of new CNS drugs.  There are many promising neurodrugs still in the pipeline, which are developed based on the validated “mechanism-based” strategy. Overall, disease-modifying neurodrugs that can prevent or cure serious diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease, are in high demand.

Counterintelligence is the business of identifying and dealing with foreign intelligence threats to a nation, such as the United States. Its main concern is the intelligence services of foreign states and similar organizations of non-state actors, such as transnational terrorist groups. Counterintelligence functions both as a defensive measure that protects the nation's secrets and assets against foreign intelligence penetration and as an offensive measure to find out what foreign intelligence organizations are planning to defeat better their aim. This article addresses the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) foreign counterintelligence function. It briefly traces its evolution by examining the key events and the issues that effected its growth as the principle civilian counterintelligence service of the U.S. government.

AbstractTemperature probes of different designs were widely used in aero gas turbine engines for measurement of air and gas temperatures at various locations starting from inlet of fan to exhaust gas from the nozzle. Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) downstream of low pressure turbine is one of the key parameters in performance evaluation and digital engine control. The paper presents a holistic approach towards life assessment of a high temperature probe housing thermocouple sensors designed to measure EGT in an aero gas turbine engine. Stress and vibration analysis were carried out from mechanical integrity point of view and the same was evaluated in rig and on the engine. Application of 500 g load concept to clear the probe design was evolved. The design showed strength margin of more than 20% in terms of stress and vibratory loads. Coffin Manson criteria, Larsen Miller Parameter (LMP) were used to assess the Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) and creep life while Goodman criteria was used to assess High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) margin. LCF and HCF are fatigue related damage from high frequency vibrations of engine components and from ground-air-ground engine cycles (zero-max-zero) respectively and both are of critical importance for ensuring structural integrity of engine components. The life estimation showed LCF life of more than 4000 mission reference cycles, infinite HCF life and well above 2000 h of creep life. This work had become an integral part of the health monitoring, performance evaluation as well as control system of the aero gas turbine engine.

Four Textron Lycoming TF40B marine gas turbine engines are used to power the U.S. Navy’s Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicle. This is the first hovercraft of this configuration to be put in service for the Navy as a landing craft. The TF40B has experienced compressor blade pitting, carbon erosion of the first turbine blade and hot corrosion of the hot section. Many of these problems were reduced by changing the maintenance and operation of the LCAC. A Component Improvement Program (CIP) is currently investigating compressor and hot section coatings better suited for operation in a harsh marine environment. This program will also improve the performance of some engine components such as the bleed manifold and bearing seals.
