ABSTRACTA new layered perovskite vanadium oxide Sr4V3O8-d was synthesized and its crystal structure and magnetic properties were studied. Sr4V3O8-d has a novel crystal structure, containing a V-0 octahedron and a two-fold V-0 fence in a unit cell. It exhibits negative magnetization below 30 K. when cooled in a magnetic field. This peculiar magnetism is attributed to N-type parasitic ferrimagnetism.

ABSTRACTThe crystal structure and magnetic properties in epitaxially grown Sr1-xBaxRuO3 on SrTiO3 substrates were determined. Epitaxial Sr1-xBaxRuO3 exhibits a simple perovskite structure in the whole region of Ba/Sr ratio, in contrast to a complex hexagonal layered perovskite in the case of Ba-rich bulk Sr1-xBaxRuO3 which has plane-sharing oxygen octahedra. Tetragonal deformation was enhanced from the pseudo cubic structure of SrRuO3 to a highly distorted tetragonal lattice in BaRu03. Electronic properties such as conductivity and magnetization were examined and compared to the results of band calculation in which a tetragonal distortion was taken into account. A metal-insulator transition was not observed in this system either in the experiment or in the simulation, and metallic conductivity was maintained in the whole region of Ba content. The ferromagnetic ordering which occurs at 160K in pseudo-cubic bulk SrRuO3 was suppressed in Sr1-xBaxRuO3 films with increasing tetragonal deformation and Curie temperature decreased to 50K in BaRuO3.

NaSi reacts with MoCl5 and 15-crown-5 in toluene with reduction of Mo(V) to Mo(IV). Work-up in DME yields MoCl4(DME)· 15-crown-5 (1). MoCl4(DME) (2) is prepared more conveniently from MoCl5/DME. 1 and 2 were characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray structure determination. Crystal data: 1, space group P212121 (No. 19), Z = 4, 2765 observed independent reflexions, R = 0.026, cell dimensions (110 K): a = 16.292(4), b = 12.884(3), c = 10.452(2) Å. 2, space group I4̄2d (No. 122), Z = 8, 558 observed independent reflexions, R = 0.037, cell dimensions (292 K): a = b = 9.562(2), c = 23.777(6)Å. The MoCl4(DME) molecule of 1 and 2 forms a distorted octahedron. There are four non-coordinating 15-crown-5 molecules present in the unit cell of 1. The UV/VIS spectrum and the magnetic properties of 2 are discussed.
