ABSTRACTHomogeneous solutions of yttrium, barium and copper 2-(2-methoxy)-ethoxyethoxides in 2-(2-methoxy)ethoxyethanol of appropriate lY:2Ba:3Cu stoichiometry have been prepared and used in sol-gel synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7-δ. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the preparation of a homogeneous solution of yttrium, barium and copper homoleptic alkoxides dissolved only in the parent alcohol. These solutions provide an excellent starting point for sol-gel synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7-° since the metals are mixed on the molecular scale, and because the solutions are stable with no possibility of ligand exchange to give insoluble products. Hydrolysis and careful heat treatment of gels produced from these solutions yield nearly pure tetragonal YBa2Cu3O7-δ at temperatures as low as 725°C. The preparation of these solutions and their characterization by small-angle x-ray scattering measurements and TEM are reported, as well as preliminary data pertaining to their use in the sol-gel synthesis of YBa2Cu3O7-δ.

A LaAlO3 precursor solution was prepared via an all alkoxide sol-gel route. The solution of lanthanum methoxyethoxide and aluminum methoxyethoxide in 2-methoxyethanol was prepared via ligand exchange starting from lanthanum isopropoxide and aluminum sec-butoxide and was used to make both LaAlO3 powders and films. Complete hydrolysis of the solution formed a gel that yielded well-crystallized LaAlO3 powders when fired in air at 800 °C. A partially hydrolyzed solution was spun-cast on SrTiO3 (100) single crystal substrates. Epitaxial films of LaAlO3 were subsequently formed during pyrolysis in O2 at 800 °C in a rapid thermal annealing furnace for a total of 8 min. The films were strongly c-axis oriented, verified by x-ray rocking curve results from the (003) plane with full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) = 0.87°, and had good in-plane texture shown by a φ scan of the (202) plane with FWHM = 1.07°.

AbstractHigh quality barium titanate films were grown on (001)LaAlO3 and r-Al2O3 in a wide thickness range of 0.5-10 µtm by sol-gel technique. Significant improvement of the films' crystallinity and optical quality was observed if acetate precursors are used vs. alkoxide precursors, and in the presence of lead oxide. The material is transparent at 350-2000 nm, indicating the possibility of its application in light controlling devices at wavelengths used in optical communication: 1300 and 1500 nm. Maximum field induced relative phase shift of 0.22 radian was measured in the film with composition of Ba0.9Pb0.1TiO3 under a field strength of 3.106 V/cm.

Lanthanum and neodymium titanates were prepared by a sol-gel route. Synthesis of La2Ti2O7 from pure alkoxide precursors yielded an intermediate perovskite type phase, La(1–x)TiO3, which partially transformed to La2Ti2O7 on heating to 1500 °C. Substitution of the lanthanum acetylacetonate for alkoxide precursor yielded La2Ti2O7 without any intermediate phase at a very low temperature of 700 °C. Sintering of the La2Ti2O7 gel powder yielded a highly dense ceramic with ∼97% theoretical density. Similar sintering treatment resulted in ∼92% theoretical density for Nd2Ti2O7.

AbstractReal 3-D sub-νm lithography was performed with two-photon polymerization (2PP) using inorganic-organic hybrid polymer (ORMOCER®) resins. The hybrid polymers were synthesized by hydrolysis/polycondensation reactions (modified sol-gel synthesis) which allows one to tailor their material properties towards the respective applications, i.e., dielectrics, optics or passivation. Due to their photosensitive organic functionalities, ORMOCER®s can be patterned by conventional photo-lithography as well as by femtosecond laser pulses at 780 nm. This results in polymerized (solid) structures where the non-polymerized parts can be removed by conventional developers.ORMOCER® structures as small as 200 nm or even below were generated by 2PP of the resins using femtosecond laser pulses. It is demonstrated that ORMOCER®s have the potential to be used in components or devices built up by nm-scale structures such as, e.g., photonic crystals. Aspects of the materials in conjunction to the applied technology are discussed.
