AbstractSol-gel derived PZT films were successfully prepared from precursor solutions based on lead acetate and Zr/Ti alkoxides. A pyrochlore phase was observed in films fired at low temperatures, while single-phase perovskite films were obtained at temperatures above 725C. The dielectric constant increased to above 1000 when there was a higher proportion of perovskite than pyrochlore. The films were essentially fatigue-free up to 108 cycles and exhibited a low aging rate of 5.7% / decade-sec.

AbstractCa2Nd4Ti6O20, a layered perov skite structured material was synthesized via a chemical (citrate sol-gel) route for the first time using nitrates and alkoxide precursors. Phase analysis of a sample sintered at 1625 °C revealed the formation of an orthorhombic (Pbn21) symmetry. The microstructure of the sample after sintering comprised rod-shaped grains of a size of 1.5 to 6.5µm. The room temperature dielectric constant of the sintered sample was 38 at 100 kHz. The remnant polarization (Pr) and the coercive field (Ec) were about 400 μC/cm2 and 8.4 kV/cm, respectively. Impedance spectroscopy revealed that the capacitance (13.7 pF) and activation energy (1.39 eV) of the grain boundary was greater than the capacitance (5.7 pF) and activation energy (1.13 eV) of the grain.

ABSTRACTA series of PZT precursor solutions was prepared which incorporated excess PbO to give the composition Pb1+xZr0.53Ti0.47O3+x, where 0 < × < 0.3. These solutions were spin coated on platinized Si wafers and fired at elevated temperatures up to 750C for 30 mins. After crystallization into single-phase perovskite, the films were studied using XRD, optical microscopy and electrical characterization techniques (hysteresis loops and dielectric properties). It was found that the presence of excess PbO significantly improved the PZT films in terms of phase assemblage, microstructure and electrical properties. Under optimized conditions, films with dielectric constants of around 3000 can be obtained.

ABSTRACTA series of sol-gel derived PB(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) films, with various PbTiO3 contents, have been prepared on platinized Si wafers. The (l-x)PZN - xPT films fired to 700C became single phase perovskite for x > 0.7. In the PZN-0.1PT films, the films still contain pyrochlore phase at a firing temperature of 850C; the perovskite phase appeared at a firing temperature of 800C. The dielectric constant increased with increasing PT content, with a peak in dielectric constant at x = 0.8. PZN-PT films with x = 0.8 exhibited dielectric constant, dissipation factor, remanent polarization and coercive field values of 600, 0.10, 6 and 45 kV/cm respectively.

Pb(Zr1-x, Tix)O3 (x = 0.05) with pyroelectric properties have been synthesized by sol–gel technique at low temperatures. XRD results indicate that the powder has perovskite structure without secondary phases and the average of particle size was estimated to be about 40 nm in diameters. The optical constants such as refractive index, n, extinction coefficient, k, and the dielectric function of PZT nanopowders have been investigated by Fourier transmittance infrared (FTIR) spectrum and Kramers–Kronig (KK) analysis program. The use of the KK method to analyze the normal incidence infrared (IR) reflectance spectra with a single resonance has also been described. The results indicated that the optical constant increases slowly as temperature of calcinations increases.

Five nanosized perovskite and four ferrospinel powders were prepared by sol–gel self-combustion technique. The La0.6Pb0.2Mg0.2MnO3 perovskite was found to exhibit the best catalytic performance with respect to propane combustion at low temperatures.
