Ultrasonic Velocity Studies of Graphite and Its Intercalation Compounds

ABSTRACTThe c-axis sound velocities and attenuations for HOPG, stage 3 and stage 4 SbCl5-graphite were determined by ultrasonic techniques in the temperature range between 4 and 325 *K. The temperature variation of C33 for HOPG agrees closely with the theoretical prediction based on the Lennard-Jones interlayer potential. In SbCl5-graphite, the longitudinal sound attenuation increases sharply and the transverse sound cannot propagate for temperatures above 200 °K, indicating a commensurate-to-incommensurate in-plane phase transition. The stage dependence of C33 at low temperatures indicates that the interlayer forces beyond the nearest layers can not be neglected.

The paper presents recent results of ultrasonic investigation of Sn2P2S6 family ferroelectric crystals and their solid solutions in the temperature range 100-300 K. It was shown that in Sn2P2(S,Se)6 crystals the critical ultrasonic velocity slowing down for longitudinal waves propagating along main crystallographic directions is quite sharp and large. The relative change of longitudinal ultrasonic velocity along z-axis at the phase transition gradually increased from 10 % in pure Sn2P2S6 till 25 % for sample with 0.4 content of Se. Such large velocity change causes the large ultrasonic attenuation anomaly. The increase of relaxation time: τ=τ0/(TC-T) leads to the increase of attenuation. Prefactor τ0 was shown to be very small and the critical attenuation anomaly arises in the narrow temperature range close to phase transition. In the 0.4 Se sample the phase transition is of the first order because small thermal hysteresis exists. The ultrasonic velocity behaviour in the ferroelectric phase was described using Landau theory and free energy expansion including sixth order terms. For (Sn,Pb)2P2S6 system the critical ultrasonic anomalies were smaller and the phase transition temperature substantially decreased (for 0.45 Pb sample the phase transition point was at Tc =140 K). The ultrasonic anomalies at phase transition in (PbxSn1-x)2P2S6 have large hysteresis showing that transition is of the first order, far from the critical point.

Abstract Charging currents, J-V characteristics and electron conductivity have been measured in triglycine sulphate along three crystallographic directions: a, b and c. The measurements have been taken in a wide temperature range between −196°C and 80 °C. It is found that the charging currents have short relaxation times in the directions: a and c and a long relaxation time along the ferroelec-tric b axis. The J-V characteristics in the direction of the a and c axes have the shapes characteristic for linear dielectrics with space charge limited currents. The J-V characteristic for the b axis depends on the temperature: In the region of the phase transition the Fridkin-Kreher formula (J ∝ V4/3) is satisfied; for low temperatures characteristic agrees with SCLC theory for linear dielectrics with Gaussian traps energy distribution. The d.c. conductivity along the c axis is much higher than along the a and b axes. In the investigated temperature range, the electrical conductivity has an activation character. For −100 °C < T < −193 °C there is: σ ∝ (1/T) exp (− E/kT) . The activation energy depends both on the crystallographic direction and on the temperature-range. For low temperatures, T < −100 °C, the activation energies are very small (of the order of a few hundreds eV).

Using radiothermoluminescence (RTL), the molecular mobility features in the temperature range of 77-300 K were studied for the polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene elastomer SKEPT-4044 with NiO, Cu2O and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) based on ABS-acrylonitrile butadiene or SCS-divinyl styrene matrices. It has been shown that the introduction of nanofillers in PP significantly affects the nature and temperature of γ- and β-relaxation processes, while the region of manifestation of the β-process noticeably shifts to the region of low temperatures. Composites with Cu2O NPs have a higher β-transition temperature Tβ than composites with other NPs. It was found that PP/SKEPT-4044 composites with Cu2O NPs with a dispersion of 11-15 nm and acrylonitrile butadiene thermoplastics have optimal frost resistance compared to other compositions.

Equations specifying the dynamic viscosity of compressed water and steam are presented. In the temperature range 0-100cC the location of the inversion locus (mu) is defined for the first time with some precision. The low pressure steam results are re-correlated and a higher inversion temperature is indicated than that previously accepted. From 100 to 600°C values of viscosity are derived up to 3·5 kilobar and between 600 and 1500°C up to 1 kilobar. All the original observations in the gaseous phase have been corrected to a consistent set of densities and deviation plots for all the new correlations are given. Although the equations give values within the tolerances of the International Skeleton Table it is clear that the range and tolerances of the latter could with some advantage be revised to give twice the existing temperature range and over 10 times the existing pressure range at low temperatures. A list of the observations used and their deviations from the correlating equations is available as a separate publication.

AbstractMagnetization measurements were performed as a function of magnetic field H and temperature T on samples of nine different materials including clear fused quartz, cartridge brass, G-10 glass-reinforced epoxy, acetal homopolymer, glass-filled acetal, phenolic, and other plastics. A small yet distinct amount of ferromagnetic or paramagnetic impurities is observed in all the materials investigated in this study except quartz. In contrast, the magnetic response of quartz is typical of a diamagnet over the temperature range 5 K to 300 K. The volume susceptibility is equal to −4.4×10−7 (cgs) over the whole temperature range.

AbstractThe two line 35Cl NQR spectrum of 4,5-dichloroimidazole was measured in the temperature range 77≦ T/K ≦ 389. The temperature dependence of the NQR frequencies conforms with the Bayer model and no phase transition is indicated in the curves v ( 35Cl)= f(T). Also the temperature coefficients of the 35Cl NQR frequencies are "normal". At 77 K the 35Cl NQR frequencies are 37.409 MHz and 36.172 MHz and at 389 K 35.758 MHz and 34.565 MHz. The compound crystallizes at room temperature with the tetragonal space group D44-P41212, Z = 8 molecules per unit cell; at 295 K : a = 684.2(5) pm, c = 2414.0(20) pm. The relations between the crystal structure and the NQR spectrum are discussed.

Cu2Te single crystal was grown by the Bridgman method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of Cu2Te single crystals in the temperature range of 293–893 K was performed and possible phase transitions in the mentioned range of temperature have been investigated. (Cu2Te)[Formula: see text](ZnTe)[Formula: see text] single crystals also were grown with [Formula: see text], 0.05, 0.10 concentrations and structural properties of the obtained single crystals were investigated by the XRD method in the temperature range 293–893 K. Lattice parameters and possible phase transitions in the mention temperature range were determined for (Cu2Te)[Formula: see text](ZnTe)[Formula: see text] single crystals for [Formula: see text], 0.05, 0.10 concentrations.
