AbstractThin films of YBaCuO were prepared on MgO and SrTi03/Al2 03 substrates by rf magnetron sputtering. The SrTi03 was deposited onto AI2O3 by flash evaporation. The as‐deposited films on both substrates had an (001) orientation and were superconductors. Annealing the films in O2 improved their crystal 1inity and raised their critical temperatures (Tc). A detailed X‐ray diffraction study of the YBaCuO films was carried out. Values for the particle sizes and nonuniform strains along the c axis were obtained from broadened diffraction lines by using an integral breadth method. It was found that the broadening was mainly caused by nonuniform strain. It was also observed that nonuniform strain decreased as the films were annealed at various temperatures. The Tc's of the films were very sensitive to changes in nonuniform strain.

AbstractSuperconducting thin films (0.3-0.7μm) in the TI-Ca-Ba-Cu-0 system have been prepared on various single crystal substrates by sequential electron beam evaporation followed by appropriate sintering and annealing. Oxygen-annealed films show Tc as high as 110K and critical current densities to 600,000 A/cm2. X-ray diffraction analyses of these films show predominantly the Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu2O10 phase (c-parameter near 36Å), but some also contain up to 50 at% of the Tl2CaBa2Cu2O8 phase (c-parameter near 30Å). The complete absence of hkl reflections other than 00I demonstrates the highly oriented nature of the films as well as the absence of other Tl phases. The diffraction peaks are noticeably broader for the 36Å phase than for the 30Å phase. For a 0.7μm film such broadening is consistent with coherent sizes along the c-axis of 1200 - 1400Å and 500Å, respectively, for the 30Å and 36Å phases, and of strain values near 1.4-1.8 x 10-3 for both phases.

We have grown thin films of La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 on SrTiO3 (100), MgO (100), CeO2 (100)/Al2O3, and (100) oriented yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates by using a 90°off-axis RF magnetron sputtering deposition. X-ray diffraction analysis and ion beam channeling experiments reveal that the deposited films grow epitaxially on SrTiO3, biaxially textured on MgO, and highly textured on YSZ. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals that the thin films possess extremely smooth surfaces.

Rutile N-doped TiO2thin films were grown by RF magnetron sputtering on amorphous and crystalline substrates at room temperature. The surface elemental analysis, investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the nitrogen content of the films could be adjusted up to values as high as 4.1 at.%. As demonstrated by the X-ray diffraction data, the as-deposited films (100 200 nm thick) showed no detectable crystalline structure, while after successive annealing in air for one hour at 400°C, 500°C and 600°C, the (110) rutile peaks occurred gradually as dominant features. The rutile phase in the films was confirmed by the band gap values of the deposited materials, which stabilized at 3.1 eV, for the thin films having 200 nm thicknesses.

ABSTRACTAlN thin film structures have many useful and practical piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. The potential enhancement of the AlN piezo- and pyroelectric constants allows it to compete with more commonly used materials. For example, combination of AlN with ScN leads to new structural, electronic, and mechanical characteristics, which have been reported to substantially enhance the piezoelectric coefficients in solid-solution AlN-ScN compounds, compared to a pure AlN-phase material. In our work, we demonstrate that an analogous alloying approach results in considerable enhancement of the pyroelectric properties of AlN - ScN composites. Thin films of ScN, AlN and Al1-x ScxN (x = 0 – 1.0) were deposited on silicon (004) substrates using dual reactive sputtering in Ar/N2 atmosphere from Sc and Al targets. The deposited films were studied and compared using x-ray diffraction, XPS, SEM, and pyroelectric characterization. An up to 25% enhancement was observed in the pyroelectric coefficient (Pc = 0.9 µC /m2K) for Sc1-xAlxN thin films structures in comparison to pure AlN thin films (Pc = 0.71 µC/m2K). The obtained results suggest that Al1-x ScxN films could be a promising novel pyroelectric material and might be suitable for use in uncooled IR detectors.

La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte thin films were fabricated on La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.5Mn0.5O2.75 (LSCM) porous anode substrates by Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering method. The compatibility between LSGM and LSCM was examined. Microstructures of LSGM thin films fabricated were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effect of substrate temperature on LSGM thin films was clarified by X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Deposition rate increases firstly at the range of 50°C~150°C, and then decreases at the range of 150°C ~300°C. After annealing, perovskite structure with the same growth orientation forms at different substrate temperature. Crystallite size decreases at first, to the minimum point at 150°C, then increases as substrate temperature rises.

LiNiO2thin films were fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering. The microstructure of the films was determined by X-ray diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties were investigated with a battery cycler using coin-type half-cells. The LiNiO2thin films annealed below 500°C had the surface carbonate. The results suggest that surface carbonate interrupted the Li intercalation and deintercalation during charge/discharge. Although the annealing process enhanced the crystallization of LiNiO2, the capacity did not increase. When the annealing temperature was increased to 600°C, the FeCrNiO4oxide phase was generated and the discharge capacity decreased due to an oxygen deficiency in the LiNiO2thin film. The ZrO2-coated LiNiO2thin film provided an improved discharge capacity compared to bare LiNiO2thin film suggesting that the improved electrochemical characteristic may be attributed to the inhibition of surface carbonate by ZrO2coating layer.

Cadmium iron selenide (Cd-Fe-Se) thin films were deposited onto tin oxide (SnO2) coated conducting glass substrates from an aqueous electrolytic bath containing CdSO4, FeSO4 and SeO2 by potentiostatic electrodeposition. The deposition potentials of Cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe), Selenium (Se) and Cadmium-Iron-Selenide (Cd-Fe-Se) were determined from linear cathodic polarization curves. The deposited films were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive analysis by x-rays (EDX) and optical absorption techniques, respectively. X-ray diffraction patterns shows that the deposited films are found to be hexagonal structure with preferential orientation along (100) plane. The effect of FeSO4 concentration on structural, morphological, compositional and optical properties of the films are studied and discussed in detail.

BaTiO3(BTO) thin films were grown on (100) SrTiO3(STO) single crystal substrates using the RF-magnetron sputtering technique (RFMS) in both pure argon and mixed Ar/O2(20% O2) atmosphere. A La0.5Sr0.5CoO3(LSCO) layer was deposited as the bottom electrode by a 90° off-axis single-target RFMS. θ-2θ X-ray diffraction measurements showed that BTO thin films grown in both cases had a highly preferred c-axis orientation (001). From hysteresis measurements, it was confirmed that both films are ferroelectric. The ferroelectric polarizations 2Pr were 6.6 μC/cm2and 27.1 μC/cm2, for the BTO films grown in pure argon and in mixed Ar/O2atmosphere, respectively.
