AbstractFibrous crystals containing the high-Tc phase (2223 phase) of the Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor have been prepared by heating a glassy melt-quenched plate in a stream of oxygen gas. Each fiber is composed of several platelike single crystals which are stacked in a layered structure. The fibers show two stepdrops in resistance at 105K and 73K, and a zero-resistance state around 70K. From the results of SQUID measurements, the volume fraction of the high-T phase is found to be about 0.6%. The high-Tc phase is also detected with a microarea X-ray diffractometer, and it is stacked in the interlayer between the low-Tc platelike crystals. For the fibrous Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-Li-O crystals, the volume fraction of the high-Tc phase increases to 1.5% and a zero resistance state is achieved at 81K. The Jc value of the Li doped fiber is 30,000A/cm2 at 77K and 300,000A/cm2 at 66K in a zero magnetic field.

Bi1.7-Pb0.3-Sr2-Ca2-Cu3-Ox superconducting samples were prepared at 855°C, 862 C, 870 C, and 882 C sintering temperatures respectively. All samples were sintered for 120 hours. The samples were then quenched in liquid nitrogen. The electrical resistivity measurements showed that the samples sintered at 870° C had the best Tc. For these samples the Tc onset was around 120 K and the zero resistance was obtained at 108 K. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the samples were multiphased.

Two batches of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors have been prepared. The zero resistance temperature is 90 K with Tc onset at 93 K and 95 K, respectively. Susceptibility measurements show superconducting phase at LN2. X-ray diffraction results indicates single phases.

We have measured the transition temperature, critical field, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect for the high temperature superconductor Y-Ba-Cu-O in magnetic fields up to 23T in the temperature range 4.2 to 125K. Meissner studies at zero magnetic field were also performed in some cases. We find a strong dependence of these parameters on the relative percentage of the correct phase of Y-Ba-Cu-O in the sample. We report new results on magnetoresistance and Hall effect in these materials.

Two batches of Er-Ba-Cu-O superconductors have been prepared. The zero resistance temperature is 86 K with T c onsets at 99 K and 92 K respectively. Susceptibility measurements show superconducting phase at LN 2. X-ray diffraction results indicates two phases, the superconducting being the major one.

AbstractThe effect of oxygen partial pressure on stability of high-Tc phase in Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system has been investigated using x-ray diffraction, resistivity and a.c. susceptibility measurements. It was found that part of the high-Tc phase in Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system was transformed into the low-Tc phase (80 K) and insulating phases by heating in the temperature range 600 C to 880°C in O2 of one atmosphere. The original high-Tc phase was restored upon retreatment in a low oxygen partial pressure of 0.1 atmosphere. The reversible superconducting phase transformation is discussed in conjunction with the formation mechanism of the high-Tc phase in Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system.

We carried out in situ tri-axial magnetostriction analysis for cube-oriented Fe-18%Ga single crystal by X-ray diffraction measurement under magnetic field. Periodic change in tri-axial magnetostriction with applied magnetic field direction was clearly observed. However, those values in [100] and [010] directions were not equivalent. Theoretical calculation of magnetostriction considering domain structure revealed this is caused by the non-equivalent volume fraction of initial magnetic domains.

The effect of heat treatment on the forming process of the high-Tc phase in the cast-annealing samples has been discussed. Experiments show that the high-Tc phase is formed based on the low-Tc phase. Adding Pb to Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system can increase the forming rate and proportion of the high-Tc phase. X-ray powder diffraction indicates that some samples contain mostly the high-Tc phase. EDAX analyses suggest that Pb cations substitute partially for Sr cations rather than Bi cations in the superconducting grains.
