ABSTRACTWe present a thermal analysis which treats the problem of melting as it occurs during cw laser heating. Analytical expressions for sample temperature distributions are derived, and calculated results are compared to experimental measurements.

ABSTRACTWe present an overview of the thermal modeling of CW laser induced crystallization of SOI. The dynamical case for a three-layer structure is derived. Effects of the phase change (increase in reflectivity, latent heat) are also treated. Analytical expressions are given and the models are compared to experiment.

ABSTRACTExplosive Crystallization occurs in cw laser annealing on a-Si films deposited on glass substrates at laser scan speeds higher than 30 cm/sec. Optical, structural and electrical properties of the crystallized films at various laser scan speeds confirm the existence of two kinds of explosive growth depending on the state of crystallinity of the starting material.

The study deals with precise determination of phase transformation temperatures of steel. A series of experimental measurements were carried out by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Direct Thermal Analysis (TA) to obtain temperatures very close to the equilibrium temperatures. There are presented results from the high temperatures region, above 1000?C, with focus on the solidus temperatures (TS), peritectic transition (TP) and liquidus (TL) of multicomponent steels. The data obtained were verified by statistical evaluation and compared with computational thermodynamic and empirical calculations. The calculations were performed using 15 empirical equations obtained by literature research (10 for TL and 5 for TS), as well as by software InterDendritic Solidification (IDS) and Thermo-Calc (2015b, TCFE8; TC). It was verified that both thermo-analytical methods used are set correctly; the results are reproducible, comparable and close to equilibrium state.

A nonlinear local analysis of the steady potential flow at a ship bow and stern, and more generally at any point along a ship waterline, is presented. The hull boundary condition and the nonlinear kinematic and dynamic free-surface boundary conditions are satisfied exactly, at the actual position of the free surface, in this analysis. The bow-flow analysis shows that the free surface at a ship bow is tangent to the stem. This theoretical result appears to agree with existing experimental measurements of steady bow waves of the Wigley hull. Simple analytical expressions defining the fluid velocity at the bow and the stern, and more generally at any point along the wave profile, in terms of the elevation of the free surface at the corresponding point are also given. These analytical expressions and the available experimental measurements of wave profiles along the Wigley hull show that the velocity of the flow disturbance due to this hull is fairly small compared to the hull speed everywhere along the wave profile except in very small regions around the bow and the stern, where the total fluid velocity is nearly equal to the hull speed in magnitude but directed vertically. Nonlinearities therefore appear to be quite important, although only in very small regions surrounding a ship bow and stern. A genuine nonlinear method of calculation must then be able to represent the very rapid variation in the direction of the fluid velocity occurring within small regions around a ship bow and stern. In particular, a sufficiently fine discretization is required in these regions.

We numerically investigate the thermal effects in a cornea illuminated by terahertz radiation. By modifying the bioheat and Arrhenius equations, we studied the heat-transfer and temperature distributions in the corneal tissue, and evaluated the potential thermal damage. The influence of the beam radius and power density are discussed. We also estimated the effective cornea-collagen shrinkage region, and evaluated the degree of thermal damage in the cornea. We expect this work to open up a novel effective and safe thermal-treatment approach based on THz radiation for cornea reshaping in the field of ophthalmology.

A comparative study of three different aluminium alloys, Al2618, Al4032 and Al6061 made internal combustion engine pistons is done on their responses under mechanical and thermal loads using finite element methods. In this study, a 3D solid model of piston is created in CATIA and the simulations of the static structural analysis, steady-state thermal analysis and transient thermal analysis are carried out in ANSYS. Stress and temperature distributions on critical areas of piston are pointed out for appropriate modification in piston design. The temperature and heat flux variations with time are presented in transient thermal analysis. Taguchi method and topological optimization are applied to optimize the process parameters and to select the appropriate material for the piston.
