Amber from México: Coahuilite, Simojovelite and Bacalite

ABSTRACTCoahuilite, a new variety of amber is described from the Late Cretaceous Olmos Formation (ca. 73 Ma.), Coahuila, north of México. This amber is totally distinct chemically and stratigraphically from the Miocene Chiapas amber (ca. 23-13 Ma.), Southern México, which according to mineral nomenclature is currently known as Simojovelite var. nov. Additionally, an emended description of Bacalite is proposed, based on the physicochemical analysis and geological record of a fossil resin recently recovery from the Late Cretaceous El Gallo Formation (ca. 73 Ma.), Baja California, northwestern México. The results are supported by characterization of such ambers using synchrotron-based Infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy.

Pectin-based gelled systems have gained increasing attention for the design of newly developed food products. For this reason, the characterization of such formulas is a necessity in order to present scientific data and to introduce an appropriate finished product to the industry. Various analytical techniques are available for the evaluation of the systems formulated on the basis of pectin and the designed gel. In this paper, general analytical approaches for the characterization of pectin-based gelled systems were categorized into several subsections including physicochemical analysis, visual observation, textural/rheological measurement, microstructural image characterization, and psychorheological evaluation. Three-dimensional trials to assess correlations among microstructure, texture, and taste were also discussed. Practical examples of advanced objective techniques including experimental setups for small and large deformation rheological measurements and microstructural image analysis were presented in more details.

The present paper is focused on the microclimatic investigation and weather-climatic phenomena matrix assessment, which can be generated for heritage objectives at different spatial and temporal resolutions, correlated with physicochemical analysis of the particulate matter (PM2.5-10). In the literature the importance of atmospheric PM monitoring in the proximity of monuments is not yet sufficiently highlighted. In this respect, the microclimatic investigation of the Tropaeum Traiani Monument (Adamclisi, Romania) was performed to assess the suitability of a closed environment, located outdoors, according to the conservation requirements of heritage materials. The monitoring campaigns (four seasons, e.g., from summer of the year 2018 to spring of the year 2019) were carried out by non-invasive measuring equipment. The collected data were used to investigate the hygrothermal and chemical behavior inside and outside of Tropaeum Traiani Monument, built in 109, to assess the risks on the oldest structural material. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed by IBM SPSS Statistics software to assess the similarities between the microclimatic parameters.

Taro Boloso-I is a new variety of Colocasia esculenta (L. Schott) officially released from Areka Agricultural Research Center, Areka, Ethiopia. Its cultivation out yields a previously reported variety (Godare) by 67%. The study focuses on isolation and characterization of starch from this plant. Isolation of starch was done using saline and sodium hydroxide and characterized for its physicochemical constituents. Its yield on dry weight basis was 83.5 ± 1.6%. The native Taro Boloso-I starch (NTBIS) showed lower amylose to amylopectin ratio (20.7 ± 1.8% to 77.3 ± 2.1%, w/w) and significantly higher onset (68.40˚C), peak (75.46 ˚C) and endset (84.40 ˚C) temperatures of gelatinization than potato starch which has gelatinization range of 62.50–67.53–79.40 ˚C. The shapes of the granules were polyhedral/angular with an A-type polymorphism with a poor flow.The starch is comprised of small particles (mean diameter of 2.45 ± 0.11 μm).Taro Boloso-I starch possesses similarity with cereal starches like the rice starch though it is a tuber starch and moreover, on comparison with the previously reported varieties of Taro, there is difference in its properties.

There is growing interest in the antimicrobial discovery of life-threatening multidrug-resistant pathogens. The study was undertaken to isolate, identify, and characterize antibiotic-producing actinomycetaceae, particularly nocadisosaceae, from soil samples of Bingol, Turkey. Soil samples were collected from three different regions of Bingol, Turkey. The physicochemical analysis of the soil samples was immediately measured using standard methods. This was followed by isolation of Nocardiopsaceae, nutritional tests, chemotaxonomic analysis, and molecular characterization. The isolated organisms showed morphological properties consistent with the Nocardiopsaceae soil bacteria.  The 16s rDNA gene sequence indicated a similarity between the strains with 99.86% which was Nocardiopsaceae synnemata-formans. The BLAST hits had a significant e-value of 0.005. The results of the present study revealed that soil Nocardiopsaceae of Bingol appears to have immense potential as a source of antibacterial compounds.

The use of amber is documented in the Iberian peninsula since the Palaeolithic. The procurement and trade of this fossil resin has often been considered in discussions of long-distance trade and the emergence of social complexity, but so far no comprehensive view of the Iberian evidence has been produced to allow a more overarching interpretive model. This paper presents the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization of archaeological amber from three Iberian prehistoric sites: a necklace recovered from the megalithic site of Palacio III (Almadén de la Plata, Sevilla), a pommel from PP4 Montelirio (Valencina de la Concepción, Sevilla), and a necklace from the Muricecs de Cellers cave (Llimiana, Pallars Jussà, Lleida). Based on these new data and a review of the literature, we present an overview that outlines fluctuations in the use of amber since the Upper Palaeolithic and demonstrates long-distance amber exchange connecting Iberia with northern Europe and the Mediterranean region since the Chalcolithic period at least. We discuss changes in the origins and cultural use of amber and their implications for the consolidation of trade networks.
