Recent discoveries of novel electronic states, including relatively high-temperature superconductivity, in the actinides point to exciting prospects for future discoveries at the bottom of the periodic table. A key ingredient in all of the successes discussed here is the role of high-quality synthesis in enabling advances. Results on PuCoGa51, NpPd5Al2, and single crystal uranium are discussed.

ABSTRACTThe availability of large amounts of Buckminsterfullerene has allowed a plethora of experimental investigations on fullerenes. The chemical and physical studies have focussed on synthesis, isomerism, magnetism, spectroscopy and high temperature superconductivity in doped materials. The chemical reactivities of fullerenes have been defined and most of the studies are dominated by C60 isomers. Some of the observed activities of fullerenes parlled those of alkeies. In our previous studies, the reactivity of the 6-6' bond with respect to eco- addition was described. Current studies have exploited the olefinic nature of the 6-6' bond and analyzed the effect of the addition on cluster stability and frontier character. In this work, we describe the mechanisms of simple substitution and analyze stability and orbital effects for the addition chemistry of C60 with multiple species. Evolving changes in orbital frontier character are analyzed with respect to site directed chemistry exhibited by C60.

In this paper, high-quality N-rich single crystal diamonds with different boron additive contents were synthesized in NiMnCo alloy with high Ni content by the temperature gradient growth method under HPHT (high pressure and high temperature) conditions.

Since their discovery in 1987, significant progress has been made in the fabrication of high-quality, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) thin films. Films with reproducible properties can be routinely deposited on single crystal substrates by several well-established processing techniques. Single crystal substrates, however, are not suitable for many applications because of their cost, limitations in size and shape, and lack of flexibility. Hence, a great deal of effort has been directed at the fabrication of thin films on polycrystalline rather than single crystal substrates. For example, metallic substrates are expected to be useful for the fabrication of HTS conductors for such applications as generators, motors, and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices. For polycrystalline thin-film applications, lattice matching for epitaxial growth of thin films is no longer possible. Microstructures of these films are generally more complex than those of single crystal films, primarily because of grain boundaries. As a result, the microstructure of polycrystalline films must be carefully controlled to ensure that the critical current density is high enough for practical applications.Happily, progress in this respect has been substantial. There have been laboratory demonstrations of techniques for controlled processing of high-quality HTS thin films on polycrystalline substrates. Even though the technology development in this area is still in its infancy, many successful processing approaches have been developed to set the stage for the eventual use of HTS thin films in power device applications.
