AbstractWe discuss three examples of emergent behavior in correlated electron matter, in which the discovery of scaling of several measured quantities with a single energy scale provides a key clue to a common magnetic origin: the emergence of itinerant (mobile) electronic behavior from the Kondo lattice of localized f electrons found in cerium- and uranium-based heavy fermion materials; the emergence of unconventional superconductivity in the cuprate and “high-temperature” heavy electron Ce- and Pu-based 1-1-5 superconductors; and the emergence of pseudogap behavior in the underdoped and optimally doped cuprate superconductors. We conclude with some speculation on ways in which these novel perspectives might be used to design new materials.

AbstractAtomic manipulation techniques have provided a bottom-up approach to investigating the unconventional properties and complex phases of strongly correlated electron materials. By engineering artificial systems containing tens to thousands of atoms with tailored electronic or magnetic properties, it has become possible to explore how quantum many-body effects emerge as the size of a system is increased from the nanoscale to the mesoscale. Here we investigate both theoretically and experimentally the quantum engineering of nanoscale Kondo lattices – Kondo droplets – exemplifying nanoscopic replicas of heavy-fermion materials. We demonstrate that by changing a droplet’s real-space geometry, we can not only create coherently coupled Kondo droplets whose properties asymptotically approach those of a quantum-coherent Kondo lattice, but also markedly increase or decrease the droplet’s Kondo temperature. Furthermore we report on the discovery of a new quantum phenomenon – the Kondo echo – a signature of droplets containing Kondo holes functioning as direct probes of spatially extended, quantum-coherent Kondo cloud correlations.

ABSTRACTThere is a growing body of evidence that a number of mixed-valent and heavy-fermion materials show renormalized hybridization gaps either at the Fermi-energy or close to the Fermi-energy. In the former case, a heavy-fermion semiconducting state occurs and in the later case, the system remains metallic at low temperatures. The magnitudes of the hy-bridization gaps are observed to decrease with increasing temperature. The existence of a low-energy electronic energy scale creates a possibility that the Born-Oppenheimer ap-proximation may fail and that there may be a resonant coupling between the phonons and the electronic excitations. Here we argue that such a mechanism may be the cause of the phonon anomalies observed in neutron scattering experiments on the high-temperature phase of alpha-uranium.

Heavy-fermion compounds are ideally suited to study cooperative phenomena in highly correlated electron systems. We discuss local-moment magnetism and heavy-fermion band magnetism in the exemplary systems CeCu 2 Ge 2 and Ni-rich Ce(Cu 1− x Ni x )2 Ge 2, respectively. In addition, the coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetic order and heavy-fermion superconductivity in UM 2 Al 3 (M: Ni, Pd) will be addressed.
