The heat-treatment retention time effect of carbonized polyvinylidenechloride (PVDC) was investigated. Homogeneous PVDC with a crystallite size of 267 Å was used as a precursor material for an electric double-layer capacitor electrode. The P-120m material, which was heat treated for 120 min at 700 °C, shows a larger specific capacitance than any other material in this study. It shows the largest values reported up to now, reaching values as high as 100.2 F/g for a two-electrode system, which is equivalent to 400.8 F/g in a conventional three-compartment electrode system. It is difficult to distinguish the difference in the pore-size distribution by way of gas adsorption as the retention time is varied. However, the difference can be clarified using a novel method based on the analysis of transmission electron microscopy images. As the retention time for heat treatment increases, the pore size grows through the coalescence of small pores. Furthermore, a new concept for the electric double-layer capacitance is suggested on the basis of analysis of the transmission electron microscopy observations.

The effect of aging time on the crushing performance of Al-0.5Mg-0.4Si alloy used for safety components of automobile was investigated by tensile test and crush test. Moreover, the microstructure of the alloy was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the localized deformation ductility index, ΔAabs, which is defined as the difference between total elongation and uniform elongation, of Al-0.5Mg-0.4Si alloy is 6.5%, 7.0% and 8.5%, respectively, after being aged at 210 °C for 1, 3 and 6 h, and this tendency is the same as that of the crushing performance. The spacing of grain boundary precipitates (GBPs) from TEM results are found to be 94.9, 193.6 and 408.2 nm after being aged at 210 °C for 1, 3 and 6 h, respectively, and this tendency is same to that of ΔAabs. A mechanism about the relation between the spacing of GBPs and the ductility index ΔAabs has been proposed based on localized deformation around GBPs. With the increase of GBPs spacing, the ΔAabs increases, and the crushing performance is improved.

The effect of dopant size (ionic radius) on the crystal growth, structure and optical properties of nanocrystalline calcium titanate, CaTiO3(CTO), have been studied using small-angle neutron scattering. X-ray diffraction, along with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, confirms the growth of pure nanocrystalline CTO. Rietveld analysis reveals that the difference of ionic radii between dopant and host ions induces strain within the lattice, which significantly affects the lattice parameters. The induced strain, due to the difference of ionic radii, causes the shrinkage of the optical band gap, which is manifested by the redshift of the absorbance band. Mesoscopic structural analysis using scattering techniques demonstrates that the ionic radius of the dopant influences the agglomeration behaviour and particle size. A high-resolution transmission electron microscopy study reconfirms the formation of pure highly crystalline CTO nanoparticles.

ABSTRACTMicrostructures of Nd15−xDyxFe77B8 prepared by alloying with Dy, and by using Dy2O3 as a sinl'ken adidive, have been determined using electron microprobe and transmission electron microscopy. The results have shown a higher Dy concentration near the grain boundaries of the 2–14–1 phase for magnets doped with Dy2O 3, as compared to the Dy-alloyed magnets. A two-step post sintering heat treatment was also studied for the two systems. The resultant concentration gradient of Dy in the 2–14–1 phase of the oxide-doped magnets is explained by the reaction of Dy2O3 with the Nd-rich grain boundary phase and its slow diffusion into thg 4–14–1 phase. Increased Dy concentration near the grain boundary is more effective in improving the coercivity, as domain reversal nucleation originates at or near this region.

We have used transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy to examine the effect that grain size and heat treatment have on twinning and microcracking in polycrystalline Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ. It is shown that isothermal oxygenation heat treatments produce twin structures consisting of parallel twins, with a characteristic spacing that increases with increasing grain size. Slow cooling through the temperature range where the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation induces twinning, however, produces a structure consisting of a hierarchical arrangement of intersecting twins, the scale of which appears to be independent of grain size. It is also shown that the microcracking induced by anisotropic changes in grain dimensions on cooling or during oxygenation can be suppressed if the grain size of the material is kept below about 1 μm. The results are examined in the light of current models for transformation twinning and microcracking and the models used to access the effect other processing variables such as oxygen content, doping or heat treatment may have on the microstructure of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ.

ABSTRACTPowders of Al alloy 7091 have been consolidated by means of dynamic compaction. The dependence of density and hardness on projectile velocity has been determined. The resulting as-compacted material has been characterized using analytical transmission electron microscopy and evidence of interparticle melting observed. The microstructural responseof the compacted material to heat treatment at 523 and 723°K has been investigated.

In this work, CaCO3 nanoparticles have been synthesized via heat-treatment of a new precursor. Effect of calcinations temperature on particle size has been investigated. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). nanoCaCO3 was modified using chloroform as solvent and fatty acid as modifier atroom temperature. The advantage of this modification is that it can be proceed at room temperature and it can reduce energy consumption.

ABSTRACTIn this paper we report preliminary observations of oxygen precipitation in degenerately-doped silicon using etching, optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that n+ material was resistant to precipitation, but p+ material precipitated readily. A multistep heat treatment starting with a low temperature step to achieve a high supersaturation ratio was sucessfully used to induce precipitation in n+ material.

ABSTRACTThe reaction between Ni60Ta40 amorphous alloy and (001) GaAs was studied by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, Auger spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. At 400°C formation of Ni GaAs at the interface with GaAs was observed. After heat treatment at 600°C in vacuum a layered structure of TaAs/NiGa/GaAs has been formed. The NiGa layer has epitaxial relations to the GaAs substrate. The vertical phase separation can be explained by opposite diffusion directions of nickel and arsenic atoms.

Fine granules of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) were heat-treated/annealed on NaCl near its melting temperature (Tm) and/or at a temperature (Tc) between upper and lower feet of the exothermic peak in the DSC cooling process from Tm. Morphological changes of the granules were examined in the bright- and dark-field modes by transmission electron microscopy. When the granules were heat-treated near Tm, microfibrils of 20–30 nm in width and fibrils of 70–120 nm in width came out of the granules. The microfibrils were also observed in the fibrils. The microfibrils formed by heat treatment near Tm seemed to be identified as microfibrils of 20–30 nm in width which were recognized outside the granules annealed at Tc. It is expected that such a microfibril will grow to be a band in the band structure observed on the surface of bulk PTFE. Since the 0015 dark-field images showed that the PTFE chains in such microfibrils and fibrils are set perpendicular to their fibril axis, the chains should fold back and forth repeatedly at both lateral side-surfaces of the microfibrils and fibrils.
