Orthorhombic KNbO3 and NaNbO3 powders were hydrothermally synthesized in KOH and NaOH solutions (6.7–15 M) at 150 and 200 °C. An intermediate hexaniobate species formed first before eventually converting to the perovskite phase. For synthesis in KOH solutions, the stability of the intermediate hexaniobate ion increased with decreasing KOH concentrations and temperatures. This led to significant variations in the induction periods and accounted for the large disparity in the mass of recovered powder for different processing parameters. It is also believed that protons were incorporated in the lattice of the as-synthesized KNbO3 powders as water molecules and hydroxyl ions.

The realization of stable inorganic perovskites is crucial to enable low-cost solution-processed photovoltaics. However, the main candidate material, CsPbI3, suffers from a spontaneous phase transition at room temperature towards a photo-inactive orthorhombic δ-phase (yellow phase). Here we used theoretical and experimental methods to study the structural and electronic features that determine the stability of the CsPbI3 perovskite. We argued that the two physical characteristics that favor the black perovskite phase at low temperatures are the strong spatial confinement in nanocrystalline structures and the level of electron doping in the material. Within this context, we discussed practical procedures for the realization of long-lasting inorganic lead halide perovskites.

Abstract 2-Hydroxy-5-methoxyphenylphosphonic acid (H3L1) and the complex [Cu(H2L1)2(H2O)2] were synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The polyhedron of the copper atom is an axially elongated square bipyramid with oxygen atoms of phenolic and of monodeprotonated phosphonic groups at the base and oxygen atoms of water molecules at the vertices. The protonation constants of the H3L1 acid and the stability constants of its Cu2+ complexes in water were determined by potentiometric titration. The protonation constants of the acid in water are significantly influenced by the intramolecular hydrogen bond and the methoxy group. The H3L1 acid forms complexes CuL‒ and CuL24‒ with Cu2+ in water.

Multilayered materials and coating are complex structures proposed among others to face the structural requirements of ceramics. The development of reinforcement mechanism by laminated structures can be due to deflection criteria or to the presence of residual stresses and requires of tailored laminates. These designs are characterized by the phases, thickness and distribution of the layers as well as the joining strength between them. In this sense water based colloidal processing techniques are used to fabricate layered structures by consolidating the layers from fluid dispersions of the powders in water. In these processing methods the phases presented in the final laminate are mainly given by the composition of the starting slurries while the changes in thickness and sharpness of the layers are controlled by acting on the processing parameters. The achievement of stable slurries is a shared step for all the colloidal processing techniques. In the water based slurries the stability will be dominated by the polar media, the surface behavior of the particles and the presence of dispersant additives to increase the repulsion between particles. The stable slurry ensures an effective milling and dispersion of the phases as well as high solid loadings, if required. Further processes associated to shaping and consolidation of the layers requires the incorporation of additives and-or water removal. The shaping methods based on aqueous slurries can be classified taking into account the process of solid-water separation. For each of those shaping methods, the nature and amount of the additives is different in order to get the optimum rheological behavior and green strength after drying. Depending on the thickness of layers and coatings as well as the shape and dimensions of the samples, the shaping method can be selected alone and combined with others.

The results of the system analysis of the set of input factors of the volumetric centrifugal-planetary processing, allowing to implement a comprehensive approach to the provision of quality processing parameters, are considered. A sequence of modeling processes ensuring the quality of surfaces during bulk processing is given. The results of modeling the contact of an abrasive working body with the surface of a workpiece with a microrelief are shown. The factors determining the stability of reliable achievement of qualitative indicators are noted. A dependence has been developed to determine the parameter of the surface roughness to be reduced, based on the results of modeling the contact between the surfaces of the working fluid and the workpiece by the finite element method. The experience of designing volumetric centrifugal processing operations on the basis of modeling is generalized. Methodical methods of technological preparation of manufacture for volumetric processing are offered.

Thermal spraying is a versatile technique of coating manufacturing implementing large variety of materials and processes. The manufacture control is constrained by the understanding of the physical phenomena occurring during the spraying. It is however penalized by the large number of processing parameters (up to 50), their interdependencies, their correlations with the coating attributes and the stability of the process. Numerous statistical, heuristic or physical models intended to response to these constrains, very often partially because considering some aspects of the process. This work aims at considering a more global approach based on a powerful statistical methodology using artificial intelligence. Following this approach, the physical phenomena are encoded in a structure called Artificial Neural Network (ANN). An application of the ANN methodology is discussed in the case of the APS spray process. Some processing parameters categories are related to some coating properties for alumina-titania (13% by weight) ceramic coatings. ANN optimization is presented and discussed. Predicted results show globally a well agreement with the experimental values. Some conclusions point out the advantages of the ANN on the conventional methods, such as the design of experiments, used usually to recognize the controlling factors in a process.

In certain industrial processes, ice aggregations on surfaces can occur under almost vacuum conditions and at very low to cryogenic temperatures due to residual water molecules. This aggregation can affect the performance of the process and it is therefore of interest to monitor such surfaces. In this paper, we present a capacitive ice measurement system capable to operate in vacuum and temperatures of about - 120 ∘ C and below. We present a capacitive sensor setup with a separation of sensor element and sensor electronics, such that the sensor electronics can reside outside the cold environment. It is demonstrated that the permittivity of such ice formations at vacuum and low temperatures is sufficient for measurement using the proposed sensor configuration. Results from a long-term study using a prototype further demonstrate the stability of the system and thus the feasibility of the proposed system for long term condition monitoring of surfaces in vacuum that are e.g., cooled by cryogenic liquids. The developed system uses wireless communication in order to allow for simple retrofitting of existing infrastructure even in remote locations.

AbstractAdditive manufacturing with electrohydrodynamic direct writing is a promising approach for the production of polymeric microscale objects. In this study we investigate the stability of one such process, melt electrospinning writing, to maintain accurate placement of the deposited fibre throughout the entire print. The influence of acceleration voltage and feeding pressure on the deposited poly(ε-caprolactone) fibre homogeneity is described, and how this affects the variable lag of the jet drawn by the collector movement. Three classes of diameter instabilities were observed that led to poor printing quality: (1) temporary pulsing, (2) continuous pulsing, and (3) regular long bead defects. No breakup of the electrified jet was observed for any of the experiments. A simple approach is presented for the melt electrospinning user to evaluate fibre writing integrity, and adjust the processing parameters accordingly to achieve reproducible and constant diameter fibres.

In the title compound, [Ni(C12H6O4)(C22H16N2O)2(H2O)2]n, the Ni2+cation resides on a centre of inversion in a slightly distorted octahedral [N2O4] environment. The two carboxylate groups of each naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate (NDC2−) ligand, which reside on centres of inversion, link the NiIIcations into a one-dimensional chain. Identical chains are linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between coordinated water molecules and the uncoordinated N atoms of 4-{4-[4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenoxy]phenyl}pyridine ligands to form (4,4)-topological sheets, and then the different sheets are interlocked in an inclined fashion to give a three-dimensional polycatenation network. The stability of the structure is further enhanced by π–π stacking interactions between pyridine and benzene rings.

The logarithm of the pseudo-first-order rate coefficient k for the aquation of Co(NH3)5X(3–n)+ can be represented by a quadratic equation in the pressure P, or, better, by[Formula: see text]where P is in kbar, [Formula: see text] is the volume of activation at P = 0, and x is the increase in the number of water molecules solvating the complex as it goes to the transition state. For [Formula: see text]Cl−, Br−,[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] at 25° [Formula: see text] and ionic strength I = 0.1 M LiClO4/HClO4, [Formula: see text] −10.6, −9.2, −6.3, and +16.8 cm3 mol−1, and x = 8.0, 4.1, 3.9, 1.9, and −4.2; for Xn− = NCS−, the mean ΔV* from P = 0.001 to 2.5 kbar at 88° is −4 cm3 mol−1. Detailed consideration of these data, especially their correlation with the molar volume of reaction by a straight line of unit slope for [Formula: see text] Cl−, Br−, NO3−, and H2O, provides strong evidence for a dissociative interchange mechanism. For [Formula: see text] the separating entity is probably HN3 rather than [Formula: see text] For Xn− = NCS−, aquation is incomplete, at practical complex concentrations; at 88.0°, 1 bar, and I = 0.1 M LiClO4/HClO4, k = 3.3 × 10−6 s−1 and the stability constant of Co(NH3)5NCS2+ is 490 M−1.
