A simple approach has been developed for the synthesis of Au@CdS core-shell nanoparticles by a direct self-assembling process. Stable Au@CdS composite colloids were prepared by thiourea, as a double-functional reagent that acted as the linkage agent between Cd2+ ions and gold nanoparticles. The CdS-capped gold composite nanoparticles were successfully integrated into BaTiO3 films. A significant enhancement of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility in the Au@CdS nanoparticles with core-shell structure is reported. To compare the effect of enhanced nonlinear response, single gold or CdS nanoparticles embedded in BaTiO3 films were also prepared.

ABSTRACTGold/albumin core/shell nanoparticles (Au/AlbNPs) was prepared by a novel aggregation/crosslinking technique and characterized by several spectroscopic and microscopy methods. Albumin, in presence of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), is aggregated by the addition of ethanol and further stabilized by radiation-induced crosslinking using a 60Co source. Nanoconstructs are characterized to determine size, morphology and optical characteristics. The Au/AlbNPs were prepared in different ethanol and albumins concentrations. Results showed that it is possible to obtain Au/AlbNPs using ethanol 30 %v/v, albumin in different concentrations and an irradiation dose of 10 kGy. Au/AlbNP plasmon peak shifted to 530 nm, keeping the typical plasmon peak shape. The size of Au/AlbNPs is approximately double respect to the naked AuNPs and they show core/shell type morphology. The main amide peaks of albumin in FTIR spectrum can be found in the spectrum of nanoconstructs.

In this work, the Au@Ag bimetallic core–shell nanostructures were synthesized by a seed-mediated growth. The crystal structure, morphology, elemental composition, atomic concentration, and absorption spectrum of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible linear absorption spectrum, respectively. The femtosecond third-order optical nonlinearities of nanoparticle dispersions were investigated by carrying out the femtosecond-pulsed [Formula: see text]-scan measurements at 800[Formula: see text]nm. The experimental results indicate that Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles exhibit the positive refractive nonlinearity and negative absorptive nonlinearity. The third-order nonlinear refraction indexes of Au and Au@Ag nanoparticles are measured to be [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]cm2/GW, respectively. The results show that the bimetallic nanoparticle has potential possibility in nonlinear photonic applications.
