ABSTRACTCoupling semiconductors with electrochemical processes can lead to unusual materials, and attractive, practical device configurations. This work examines the reaction mechanism for single-step electrodeposition approach that creates device quality copper-indium-selenide (CISe) films with either polycrystalline or nanocrystalline morphologies on Cu and steel foils, respectively. The polycrystalline CISe film grows from In3+/Se4+ solution on Cu foil as Cu→ CuxSe→ CuInSe2; it may be used in standard planar pn devices. The nanocrystalline CISe film grown from Cu+/In3+/Se4+ solution follows the CuSe(In)→ CuInSe2→ CuIn3Se5 sequence. The latter approach leads to naturally ordered, space-filling nanocrystals, comprising interconnected 3-dimensional network of sharp, abrupt, p-CISe/n-CISe bulk homojunctions with extraordinary electro-optical attributes. Sandwiching these films between band-aligned contact electrodes can lead to high performance third generation devices for solar cells, light emitting diodes or photoelectrodes for fuel cells. Both approaches produce self-stabilized CISe absorbers that avoid recrystallization steps and can be roll-to-roll processed in simple flexible thin-film form factor for easy scale-up.

AbstractPairing semiconductors with electrochemical processing offers an untapped opportunity to create novel nanostructures for practical devices. Here we report the results of one such pairing: the in-situ formation of highly-doped, interface-matched, sharp nanocrystalline homojunctions (NHJs) with single step electrodeposition of two copper-indium-selenide (CISe) compounds on flexible foil. It produces a homogenous film, comprising inherently ordered, 3-dimensional interconnected network of pn-CISe NHJs. These CISe NHJs exhibit surprising non-linear emissions, quantized transitions, large carrier mobility, low trap-state-density, long carrier lifetime and possible up-conversion. They facilitate efficient separation of minority carriers, reduce recombination and essentially function like quantum materials. This approach mitigates the material issues and complex fabrication of incumbent nanoscale heterojunctions; it also overcomes the flexibility and scale-up challenges of conventional planar pn junctions. The self-stabilized CISe NHJ film can be roll-to-roll processed in ambient atmosphere, thus providing a promising platform for a range of optoelectronic technologies. This concept exemplified by CISe compounds can be adapted to create nano-scale pn junctions with other inorganic semiconductors.

Highly conductive, flexible, stretchable and lightweight electrode substrates are essential to meet the future demand on supercapacitors for wearable electronics. However, it is difficult to achieve the above characteristics simultaneously. In this study, ultrafine stainless-steel fibers (with a diameter of ≈30 μm) are knitted into stainless-steel meshes (SSMs) with a diamond structure for the fabrication of textile stretchable electrodes and current collectors. The electrodes are fabricated by utilizing an electrodeposited three-dimensional network graphene framework and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coating on the SSM substrates via a two-step electrodeposition process, which show a specific capacitance of 77.09 F g−1 (0.14 A g−1) and superb cycling stability (91% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Furthermore, the assembled flexible stretchable supercapacitor based on the PEDOT/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)@SSM electrodes exhibits an areal capacitance (53 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2), a good cycling stability (≈73% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles), rate capability (36 mF cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2), stretchable stability (≈78% capacitance retention at 10% strain for 500 stretching cycles) and outstanding flexibility and stability under various bending deformations. The assembled supercapacitors can illuminate a thermometer and a light-emitting diode, demonstrating their potential application as stretchable supercapacitors. This simple and low-cost method developed for fabricating lightweight, stretchable and stable high-performance supercapacitors offers new opportunities for future stretchable electronic devices.

The increased availability of High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) offers scientists and students the potential for effective remote interactive use of centralized, specialized, and expensive instrumentation and computers. Examples of instruments capable of remote operation that may be usefully controlled from a distance are increasing. Some in current use include telescopes, networks of remote geophysical sensing devices and more recently, the intermediate high voltage electron microscope developed at the San Diego Microscopy and Imaging Resource (SDMIR) in La Jolla. In this presentation the imaging capabilities of a specially designed JEOL 4000EX IVEM will be described. This instrument was developed mainly to facilitate the extraction of 3-dimensional information from thick sections. In addition, progress will be described on a project now underway to develop a more advanced version of the Telemicroscopy software we previously demonstrated as a tool to for providing remote access to this IVEM (Mercurio et al., 1992; Fan et al., 1992).

Deep blue organic-emitting fluorophores are crucial for application in white lighting and full color flat-panel displays but emitters with high color quality and efficiency are rare. Herein, novel deep blue AIE luminogens (AIEgens) with various donor units and an acceptor of cyano substituted tetraphenylbenzene (TPB) cores were developed and used to fabricate non-doped deep blue and hybrid white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Benefiting from its high emission efficiency and high proportion of horizontally oriented dipoles in the film state, the non-doped deep blue device based on CN-TPB-TPA realized a maximum external quantum efficiency 7.27%, with a low efficiency roll-off and CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.08). Moreover, efficient two-color hybrid warm white OLEDs (CIEx,y = 0.43, 0.45) were achieved using CN-TPB-TPA as the blue-emitting layer and phosphor doped host, which realized maximum current, power, external quantum efficiencies 58.0 cd A-1, 60.7 lm W-1 and 19.1%, respectively. This work provides a general strategy to achieve high performance, stable deep blue and hybrid white OLEDs by construction of AIEgens with excellent horizontal orientation

AbstractQuasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites have attracted extraordinary attention due to their superior semiconducting properties and have emerged as one of the most promising materials for next-generation light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The outstanding optical properties originate from their structural characteristics. In particular, the inherent quantum-well structure endows them with a large exciton binding energy due to the strong dielectric- and quantum-confinement effects; the corresponding energy transfer among different n-value species thus results in high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), particularly at low excitation intensities. The review herein presents an overview of the inherent properties of quasi-2D perovskite materials, the corresponding energy transfer and spectral tunability methodologies for thin films, as well as their application in high-performance LEDs. We then summarize the challenges and potential research directions towards developing high-performance and stable quasi-2D PeLEDs. The review thus provides a systematic and timely summary for the community to deepen the understanding of quasi-2D perovskite materials and resulting LED devices.
