ABSTRACTThis study reports a high-performance tin (Sn)-coated vertically aligned carbon nanofiber array anode for lithium-ion batteries. The array electrodes have been prepared by coaxial sputter-coating of tin (Sn) shells on vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (VACNF) cores. The robust brush-like highly conductive VACNFs effectively connect high-capacity Sn shells for lithium-ion storage. A high specific capacity of 815 mAh g-1 of Sn was obtained at C/20 rate, reaching toward the maximum value of Sn. However, the electrode shows poor cycling performance with conventional LiPF6 based organic electrolyte. The addition of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) improve the performance significantly and the Sn-coated VACNFs anode shows stable cycling performance. The Sn-coated VACNF array anodes exhibit outstanding capacity retention in the half-cell tests with electrolyte containing 10 wt.% FEC and could deliver a reversible capacity of 480 mAh g-1 after 50 cycles at C/3 rate.

ABSTRACTThis study reports a high-performance hybrid lithium-ion anode material using coaxially coated silicon shells on vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (VACNF) cores. The robust bush-like highly conductive VACNFs effectively connect high-capacity silicon shells for lithium-ion storage. Such architecture allows the Si shells to freely expand/contract in the radial direction during lithium-ion insertion/extraction. A high specific capacity of 3000-3650 mAh(gSi)-1 was obtained at C/1 rate, comparable to the maximum value of amorphous Si, and ∼89% of the capacity was retained after 100 charge-discharge cycles. The lithium-ion storage capacity remains nearly the same from C/10 to C/0.5 rates. The ability to obtain high capacity at significantly improved power rates while maintaining the extraordinary cycle stability demonstrates the utilization of the unique properties of such hybrid architecture for lithium-ion batteries.

The platelike Co3O4/carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite materials were synthesized by the calcination of β-Co(OH)2/CNF precursor prepared by a surfactant-free hydrothermal method. As negative electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the platelike Co3O4/CNF composites can deliver a high reversible capacity of 900 mAh g-1 for a life extending over hundreds of cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. The high Li-storage capacity and excellent cycling performance for Co3O4/CNF composite materials may mainly attribute to the beneficial effect of the CNFs addition on enhancing structural stability and electrical conductivity of Co3O4 platelets.

ABSTRACTAn efficient microwave-assisted polyol (MP) approach is report to prepare SnO2/graphene hybrid as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The key factor to this MP method is to start with uniform graphene oxide (GO) suspension, in which a large amount of surface oxygenate groups ensures homogeneous distribution of the SnO2 nanoparticles onto the GO sheets under the microwave irradiation. The period for the microwave heating only takes 10 min. The obtained SnO2/graphene hybrid anode possesses a reversible capacity of 967 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and a high Coulombic efficiency of 80.5% at the first cycle. The cycling performance and the rate capability of the hybrid anode are enhanced in comparison with that of the bare graphene anode. This improvement of electrochemical performance can be attributed to the formation of a 3-dimensional framework. Accordingly, this study provides an economical MP route for the fabrication of SnO2/graphene hybrid as an anode material for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

ABSTRACTLi2FeP2O7 is a newly developed polyanionic cathode material for high performance lithium ion batteries. It is considered very attractive due to its large specific capacity, good thermal and chemical stability, and environmental benignity. However, the application of Li2FeP2O7 is limited by its low ionic and electronic conductivities. To overcome the above problem, a solution-based technique was successfully developed to synthesize Li2FeP2O7 powders with very fine and uniform particle size (< 1 μm), achieving much faster kinetics. The obtained Li2FeP2O7 powders were tested in lithium ion batteries by measurements of cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling. We found that the modified Li2FeP2O7 cathode could maintain a relatively high capacity even at fast discharge rates.

In this work, we developed a simple one-step hydrothermal method to successfully prepare Fe3O4/FeS-reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4/FeS/rGO) composite directly, which is a novel Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anode material. The characterization of Fe3O4/FeS/rGO composite demonstrates that octahedral Fe3O4/FeS particles are uniformly deposited on the rGO, leading to a strong synergy between them. The excellent structural design can make Fe3O4/FeS/rGO composite to have higher reversible capacity (744.7[Formula: see text]mAh/g at 0.1[Formula: see text]C after 50 cycles), excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability. This outstanding electrochemical behavior can be attributed to the conductivity network of rGO, which improves the composite electrode conductivity, facilitates the diffusion and transfer of ions and prevents the aggregation and pulverization of Fe3O4/FeS particles during the charging and discharging processes. Moreover, the Fe3O4/FeS/rGO electrode surface is covered with a thin solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) film and the octahedral structure of Fe3O4/FeS particles is still clearly visible, which indicates that composite electrode has excellent interface stability. We believe that the design of this composite structure will provide a new perspective for the further study of other transition metal oxides for LIBs.

Abstract To increase the energy storage density of lithium-ion batteries, silicon anodes have been explored due to their high capacity. One of the main challenges for silicon anodes are large volume variations during the lithiation processes. Recently, several high-performance schemes have been demonstrated with increased life cycles utilizing nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, nanowires, and thin films. However, a method that allows the large-scale production of silicon anodes remains to be demonstrated. Herein, we address this question by suggesting new scalable nanomaterial-based anodes. Si nanoparticles were grown on nanographite flakes by aerogel fabrication route from Si powder and nanographite mixture using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This silicon-nanographite aerogel electrode has stable specific capacity even at high current rates and exhibit good cyclic stability. The specific capacity is 455 mAh g−1 for 200th cycles with a coulombic efficiency of 97% at a current density 100 mA g−1.

AbstractOne-dimensional (1D) α-LiFeO2 nanorods are successfully prepared via a low-temperature solid-state reaction from α-FeOOH nanorods synthesized by hydrothermal process and used as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. As cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, the nanorods can achieve a high initial specific capacity of 165.85 mAh/g at 0.1 C for which a high capacity retention of 81.65% can still be obtained after 50 cycles. The excellent performance and cycling stability are attributed to the unique 1D nanostructure, which facilitates the rapid electron exchange and fast lithium-ion diffusion between electrolyte and cathode materials.

Abstract As a biomass waste, hemp stems have the advantages of low cost and abundance, and it is regarded as a promising anode material with a high specific capacity. In this paper, activated carbon derived from hemp stems is prepared by low-temperature carbonization and high-temperature activation. The results of characterizations show the activated carbon has more pores due to the advantages of natural porous structure of hemp stem. The aperture size is mainly microporous, and there are mesopores and macropores in the porous carbon. The porous carbon has an excellent reversible capacity of 495 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.2 °C as the anode of lithium-ion battery. Compared with the graphite electrode, the electrochemical property of activated carbon is significantly improved due to the reasonable distribution of pore size. The preparation of the activated carbon provides a new idea for low cost and rapid preparation of anode materials for high capacity lithium-ion batteries.
