ABSTRACTRecent studies on aluminum degassing [1, 2] show that although the impeller speed and the gas flow rate are important process variables in terms of the productivity and operational costs, the impeller design is also a key design parameter influencing the productivity and the quality of the aluminum in foundry shops. In this work, an improved design of an impeller is tested through a water physical model and mathematical modeling and its performance is compared against commercial designs of impellers. A full-scale water physical model of a batch aluminum degassing unit was used to test the impellers by using the same operating conditions (580 rpm and 40 liters per minute) and by performing deoxidation from water by purging nitrogen into the water saturated with oxygen (similar to the dehydrogenation). A mathematical model based on first principles of mass and momentum conservation equations was developed and solved numerically in the commercial CFD code ANSYS Fluent to describe the hydrodynamics of the system with the objective of explaining the deoxidation kinetics observed in the experiments. It has been found that the new impeller design shows a better performance than the commercial designs in terms of degassing kinetics for the conditions used in this study, which is explained since the new design promotes a flow dynamics that increases the pumping effect, creating a bigger pressure drop and fluid flow patterns which help to drag and distribute more evenly the bubbles in the entire ladle than the commercial designs.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used in device design to determine gas flow patterns and turbulence levels.  CFD is also used to simulate particles and droplets, which are subjected to various forces, turbulence and wall interactions. These studies can now be performed routinely because of the availability of commercial software containing high quality turbulence and particle models. In order to understand how the gas is brought down to wafer, it is necessary to have a knowledge of the gas flow behavior very early in the design spiral of the Tantalum nitride-Atomic layer deposition(TaN-ALD) chamber by undertaking parametric investigation of the interaction effect between gas flow and the funnel structure. This paper presents such a  parametric  investigation on a generic TaN-ALD chamber using CFD. The results presented have been analyzed for a total of 11 different cases by varying neck and nozzle angles for a process gas. The gas flow was mainly investigated for the nozzle angles of  4.5◦,  9◦,  12◦  and  20◦ and the film thickness results were compared with numerical flow patterns. CFD simulations using the turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent v.13 are undertaken. The parametric study has demonstrated that CFD is a powerful tool to study the problem of gas flow-structure interaction on funnel and is capable of providing a means of visualizing the path of the gas under different operating conditions

Mesh type and quality play a significant role in the accuracy and stability of the numerical computation. A computational method for two-dimensional subsonic flow over NACA 0012 airfoil at angles of attack from 0o to 10o and operating Reynolds number of 6×106 is presented with structured and unstructured meshes. Steady-state governing equations of continuity and momentum conservation are solved and combined with k-v shear stress transport (SST-omega) turbulence model to obtain the flow. The effect of structured and unstructured mesh types on lift and drag coefficients are illustrated. Calculations are done for constant velocity and a range of angles of attack using Ansys Fluent CFD software. The results are validated through a comparison of the predictions and experimental measurements for the selected airfoil. The calculations showed that the structured mesh results are closer to experimental data for this airfoil and under studied operating conditions.

ABSTRACTA study of the fluid flow in a mixing device proposed to dissolve alloying elements in iron baths is performed through a mathematical model in order to predict the best operating conditions for a proper melting/dissolution of solid alloying particles. The mathematical model consists in the mass and momentum conservation equations (continuity and Turbulent Navier-Stokes equations), and the standard two k-epsilon turbulence model. The model is numerically solved in transient regime with the Volume of Fluid algorithm (VOF) to calculate the vortex shape. VOF is built-in the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software ANSYS FLUENT 14. A flow of metal enters tangentially in the mixing chamber of the proposed mixing device (taken from an open patent) to generate a vortex. The shape and height of the vortex reached in this chamber depends on several design variables, but in this work only the presence or absence of a barrier in the device is analyzed. Results are obtained on the vortex sizes and shapes, liquid flow patterns, turbulent structure, residence times of the particles of alloying elements added to the melt and mixing times (Residence time distribution curves) of two devices: one with a barrier and the other without this barrier. It is found that the presence of the barrier in the device increases turbulence, destroys the vortex, decreases the residence time of the particles, and decreases the volume of fluid in the device. Most of the features of the barrier are detrimental for mixing and inhibits melting/dissolution of the alloying elements. Then, it is suggested a device without the presence of barrier for better performance.

The Paris Metropolitan area, which contains over eight million inhabitants, has a daily output of about 3 M cu.meters of wastewater, the purification of which is achieved by SIAAP (Paris Metropolitan Area Sewage Service) in both Achères and Valenton plants. The carbon pollution is eliminated from over 2 M cu.m/day at Achères. In order to improve the quality of output water, its tertiary nitrification in fixed-bed reactors has been contemplated. The BIOFOR (Degremont) and BIOCARBONE (OTV) processes could be tested in semi-industrial pilot reactors at the CRITER research center of SIAAP. At a reference temperature of 13°C, the removed load is approximately 0.5 kg N NH4/m3.day. From a practical point of view, it may be asserted that in such operating conditions as should be at the Achères plant, one cubic meter of filter can handle the tertiary nitification of one cubic meter of purified water per hour at an effluent temperature of 13°C.

One of the processes that significantly determines the quality of water to consumers is the process of mixing water from different sources in the water mains. Put to the network two or more chemically and biologically stable waters may result in the formation of water that will be deprived of these features. This article presents the german guidelines for analysing water quality for mixing waters from different sources, in various proportions. Then performed an analysis of utility the mathematical models, including quality criteria, for use in network control. An IT tool has been developed to manage selected water quality processes using mathematical modeling. The basis for implementing the tool was a network model created in Epanet integrated with the Matlab.

The disadvantage of aerostatic bearings is their low dynamic quality. The negative impact on the dynamic characteristics of the bearing is exerted by the volume of air contained in the bearing gap, pockets, and microgrooves located at the outlet of the feeding diaphragms. Reducing the volume of air in the flow path is a resource for increasing the dynamic quality of the aerostatic bearing. This article presents an improved design of an axial aerostatic bearing with simple diaphragms, an annular microgroove, and an elastic suspension of the movable center of the supporting disk. A mathematical model is presented and a methodology for calculating the static characteristics of a bearing and dynamic quality indicators is described. The calculations were carried out using dimensionless quantities, which made it possible to reduce the number of variable parameters. A new method for solving linearized and Laplace-transformed boundary value problems for transformants of air pressure dynamic functions in the bearing layer was applied, which made it possible to obtain a numerical solution of problems sufficient for practice accuracy. The optimization of the criteria for the dynamic quality of the bearing was carried out. It is shown that the use of an elastic suspension of the support center improves its dynamic characteristics by reducing the volume of compressed air in the bearing layer and choosing the optimal volume of the microgroove.

AbstractThe design of micropolarizer array (MPA) patterns in Fourier domain provides an efficient approach to reconstruct and investigate the polarization information. Inspired by Alenin’s works, in this paper, we propose an improved design model to cover both 2 × N MPAs and other original MPAs, by which an entirely new class of MPA patterns is suggested. The performance of the new patterns is evaluated through Fourier domain analysis and numerical simulations compared with the existing MPAs. Particularly, we analyze the reconstruction accuracy of the first three Stokes parameters and degree of linear polarization (DoLP) in detail. The experimental results confirm that the 2 × 2 × 2 MPA provides the highest reconstruction quality of s0, s1, s2 and DoLP in terms of quantitative measures and visual quality, while the 3 × 3 diagonal MPA achieves the state-of-the-art best results in case of single-snapshot systems. The guidance of this extended model and new diagonal MPAs show its massive potential for the division of focal plane (DoFP) polarization imaging applications.
