This study reports a new record of Craspedacusta cf. sowerbii for the Municipality of Passo Fundo, located in the central plateau region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The C. cf. sowerbii specimens were collected in May 2010 in an artificial lake formed by the flooding of a former basaltic quarry. The lake is 665 m above sea level and its surface area measures around 25.000 m2. Its crystalline water is linked by the Miranda creek to the Passo Fundo River, part of the Uruguay River basin.

The Great Dusky Swift Cypseloides senex occurs mainly in Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil. Little is known about the status of this species in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. To fill this gap, several ornithologists and museum collections were consulted for records. This paper presents records for nine new localities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Cypseloides senex occurs along the central and northeast portions of the Planalto escarpment and the upper valley of the Uruguay River.

The coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, includes four barrier-lagoon depositional systems formed by successive Quaternary sea-level highstands that were correlated to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11, 9, 5 and 1, despite the scarcity of absolute ages. This study describes a sea-level highstand older than MIS 5, based on the stratigraphy, ages and fossils of the shallow marine facies found in coastal barrier (Barrier II). This facies outcrops along the banks of Chuí Creek, it is composed of fine, well-sorted quartz sand and contains ichnofossils Ophiomorpha nodosa and Rosselia sp., and molluscan shells. The sedimentary record indicates coastal aggradation followed by sea-level fall and progradation of the coastline. Thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) ages from sediments and fossil shells point to an age of ∼220 ka for the end of this marine transgression, thus correlating it to MIS 7 (substage 7e). Altimetric data point to a maximum amplitude of about 10 meters above present-day mean sea-level, but tectonic processes may be involved. Paleoceanographic conditions at the time of the highstand and correlations with other deposits in the Brazilian coasts are also discussed.

The Brazilian scorpion Tityus serrulatus is recorded for the first time in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, thus filling a gap of 567 km in its distribution. A specimen of the scorpion was collected in the urban area of the municipality of Santa Maria (29°43′51.31″ S, 053°48′5.74″ W) on 31 June 2014. A map was generated with the points of occurrence of the species in the state.

The genus Schizachyrium Nees includes ca. 60 species, 15 of them previously cited for Brazil. Schizachyrium bimucronatum Roseng., B.R. Arrill. & Izag. is a new record for Brazil and S. lactiflorum (Hack.) Herter, for the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Morphological data to aid in the identification of the two species, including short descriptions and illustrations, as well as data on their geographical distribution and habitat, are provided.

During a taxonomic revision of the genus Croton from the Pampas grasslands, some necessary taxonomic adjustments were identified and are here presented. The study was based on new collections, field work and analyses of protologues and type specimens. We treat C. allemii as a synonym of C. triqueter, C. stenotrichus as a synonym of C. hilarii, and we designate a lectotype for C. stenotrichus. Croton lombardianus is newly reported for Brazil and C. macrobothrys as a new record for the Atlantic Moist Forest in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Updated information on the geographic distributions of these species is also provided.

A taxonomic synopsis of Dorstenia (Moraceae) in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Southern Brazil, is presented. Three species were recorded: D. brasiliensis, D. carautae, a new record for the state of RS, and D. tenuis. All species are described and illustrated through detailed photos of living specimens. A taxonomic key to separate the species, as well as details on distribution, overall phenology, habitat, conservation status and ecology are presented.

Cnemidophorus vacariensis (Teiidae) is endemic to southern Brazil, occurring in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná. In the state of Paraná, this species has only been recorded in the municipality of Candói, central-south region of the state. Herein, a new record of one individual of C. vacariensis is reported for the municipality of Tibagi, located in the central-eastern region of Paraná. This record represents the northern limit of distribution of the species.

The species Callinectes sapidus is reported for the first time in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil. In Brazil, this species is only known from the state of Rio Grande do Sul to the state of Paraíba. In this work, one more gap about the distribution of this species was discovered. Samplings were gathered in two localities: Cavalos River and Ceará-mirim River, north and east coast of Rio Grande do Norte, respectively. This new record increases information about the singular distribution of this species, known for being the only species of Callinectes with disjoint distribution in the Americas.
