We studied an area with “Cerrado” associated to other vegetation types at the “Parque Estadual do Guartelá”, Tibagi, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Herein, we have a list with all species of Melastomataceae recorded in the area with an illustrated guide including all of them. Despite the small area of this Conservation Unit, the park hosts a large number of species (36), in the following genera: Acisanthera, Chaetostoma, Lavoisiera, Leandra, Miconia, Tibouchina and Trembleya. The region where the park is located is considered the southern limit of the “Cerrado” biome, and also the limit of distribution of many Melastomataceae species. The distribution of the Melastomataceae species along the different vegetation types in the PEG seems to be a pattern for the family in general, registered also for other areas of “Cerrado” in Brazil.

The caatinga is a deciduous and xerophilous vegetation that covers large areas in Brazil. An irregular rainfall with a marked dry period is a characteristic feature. This paper represents the first contribution to the knowledge of the bryoflora from caatinga vegetation in the State of Bahia. The survey was carried out in several areas from Bahia in which eigthteen species of bryophytes were found (15 mosses and 3 liverworts). The bryoflora from caatinga is composed mainly of generalists and xerophilous taxa, but even some hygrophilous species can be found. A number of species including Hyophiladelphus agrarius, Hyophila involuta, Calymperes palisotii ssp. richardii, Bryum argenteum, Entodontopsis leucostega, Octoblepharum albidum, Frullania ericoides also occur in other vegetation types. However, there are a number of species restricted to this type of vegetation, such as Helicophyllum torquatum and Riccia vitalii, at least in Bahia. Most moss species were acrocarpous with erect and short (short-turf) growth-form, whereas the foliose hepaticae were of incubous, and thallose forms.

The genus Melocactus of the family Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae is com - posed of 38 species distributed in Brazil, Central America, the Caribbean and in the Andes, and in Brazil the greatest world diversity of this genus (23 species) occurs. In the state of Sergipe, the Caatinga ecosystem occupies almost 50% of its territory, vegetation, where the largest number of species of the genus Melocactus occurs in Brazil. This study aimed to make a floristic survey of the genus Melocactus in the state of Sergipe and to analyze aspects of its conservation. The results were obtained through a survey in the herbarium database (ASE), SpeciesLink and field collections, where geographic coordinates and altitude were recorded. Specimens in the reproductive phase were collected for registration and identification in the herbarium (ASE). The phytogeographical domain of the species was identified in the macro - regions of the state, which made it possible to record the occurrence of five species of this genus, and a new one ( Melocactus sergipensis ), which is critically endangered.

There are few studies on Odonata communities in Brazil, even in its most deeply studied states, such as Minas Gerais. Therefore, it is proposed the presentation of results on the Odonata species richness of Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca (Ibitipoca State Park), located at the Zona da Mata region in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil. This Conservation Unit is considered a priority area for the conservation of the state’s invertebrates. The objective of this study was to know the number of species within the area. 100 hours of sampling were carried out, distributed amongst five campaigns of four consecutive days between  November 2016 and July 2017. There were recorded 20 different species, including a new record for the state and one potential new species. Species richness was low due to the sampling being focused exclusively on lotic systems, and also to the environment’s homogeneity. Despite the low number of species, Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca is relevant to the conservation of the Minas Gerais state’s Odonata.

On Santa Catarina Island bees were collected between 1999 and 2006 using various methods, including netting, trap nesting, and baiting. Vegetation types sampled comprised secondary forests, dunes, pastures, and parks. A checklist of 166 species of bees is presented. The family Apidae was represented by the highest number of species, followed by Megachilidae and Halictidae. Only a few species of Colletidae and Andrenidae were recorded. Species richness and occurrence of genera are compared to the results of other collections performed in the neighboring states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul.

This study provides a survey of Orchidaceae species in an area of montane Atlantic Forest in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The study area comprises two conservation units (RPPN Frei Caneca and RPPN Pedra D’Anta), forming together the Serra do Urubu, which is located in the border of the Borborema plateau. Orchidaceae is represented in this study area by 81 species and 50 genera. Epidendrum L. (10 spp.) and Habenaria Willd. (four spp.) are the most representative genera. The subtribes Laeliinae (22 spp.) and Pleurothallidinae (14 spp.) together represent about half of the number of species. The high number of orchid species distinguishes Serra do Urubu as one of the richest areas for the family in the Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil. Our study also provides 18 new records of species to Pernambuco as well as reporting on about 40% of the species and 60% of the genera cited to the State. Campylocentrum pernambucense, Cattleya labiata, Cattleya granulosa, Phragmipedium sargentianum and Zygostates bradeiare cited as endangered, 14 species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, and other seven have distributions restricted to northeastern Brazil. All these facts reinforce the importance of this area as well as management strategies for the conservation of Orchidaceae.

Piauí, a Brazilian Northeast state, has been considered one of the most important regions for the presence of new taxa in ants globally, especially considering the ecosystems’ diversity formed by the transition of the three biomes in the state, the Cerrado, Caatinga and the Atlantic Forest. Despite the recent increase in studies of ant diversity in the Neotropical region, Piauí still represents a major knowledge gap regarding its ant fauna. Therefore, this study aimed to increase the knowledge about the ant fauna of the state by generating a list of species with data obtained from the literature, online repositories and collection expeditions to the Serra da Capivara and Serra das Confusões National Parks. A total of 152 species in 52 genera and nine subfamilies were registered from 24 localities in Piauí. Fifty-eight out the 152 species recorded represent new records for the state, eight are new records for the Brazilian Northeast Region, and one consists of a new record for the country. Eleven species are here recognized as new for science. Considering the field expeditions carried out here, this work represents the first standardized study for the ant fauna of Piauí. The species list presented considerably exceeds the current number of species registered for the state so far. From the present 48 records, the number of species for Piauí raises to more than 150 with a tendency to increase with the accomplishment of future field endeavors and advances in the study of the local ants.

Abstract In the state of Pará (Brazil), until the beginning of last decade little was known about the composition of the fern and lycophyte flora. The ferruginous mountains of Carajás are located in Southeastern Pará, mostly inserted in the Floresta Nacional de Carajás. The objective of this work is to present a complete and updated list of fern and lycophyte species occurring in all vegetation types from Carajás ferruginous mountains as a contribution to the knowledge of these plant groups from the Brazilian Amazon. The species list was based on specimens collected between 2007 and 2013. About 1068 specimens deposited in the BHCB Herbarium were studied. A total of 186 species of pteridophytes were recorded, 175 species of ferns distributed in 22 families and 68 genera, and 11 species of lycophytes distributed in three families and four genera. The fern and lycophyte flora of Serra dos Carajás region corresponds to 64% of the Pará state flora of these groups and 34% of the Brazilian Amazon fern and lycophyte flora. Seven taxa are presented as new records for Pará state: Asplenium abscissum, A. otites, A. praemorsum, Blechnum lanceola, Elaphoglossum minutum, Doryopteris collina, and Hemionitis tomentosa. Three species are endemic to Serra dos Carajás, Isoetes cangae, I. serracarajensis, and Selaginella stomatoloma.

Marantaceae is a family with approximately 550 species distributed throughout the tropics, with the exception of Australia (Andersson 2003). Calathea Meyer (1818: 6) used to be the largest genus in the family, previously including ca. 300 species. After the molecular study on the genus by Borchsenius et al. (2012), which confirmed the genus as polyphyletic, Goeppertia Nees (1831: 337) was resurrected to include all the species (approximately 245) that were not in the former subgenus Calathea Körnicke (1862: 112), the Calathea lanicaulis group (Kennedy et al. 1988) and the synonymized genus Sanblasia Andersson (1984: 21). Goeppertia thus became the most representative genus of Marantaceae, in Brazil represented by ca. 100 species (Braga 2013). It is found chiefly in rainforest habitats at elevations, below 1500m (Kennedy et al. 1988). However, the number of species may yet be underestimated due to unknown diversity of Brazilian species occurring in drier areas.

I utilize my situated position as anthropologist, academician, and citizen to argue not only that we should “think” California, but also that we should “rethink” our state—both its condition and its social cartography. To be clear, I see all my research and endeavors—my research on the US/Mexico border; my time among the markets and entrepreneurs I have worked and lived with; my focus on those places in which I was raised: Lemon Grove, Logan Heights; the family network and my community ethnographic work—as personal. I am in this academic game and the telling of our story because it is personal. When Lemon Grove was segregated, it was about my family; when Logan Heights was split by the construction of Interstate 5 and threatened by police surveillance, it was about our community; when the border was sanctioned and militarized it again was about the communities of which I am a part. A rethinking California is rooted in the experience of living California, of knowing and feeling the condition and the struggles we are experiencing and the crises we have gone through. We need to rethink California, especially the current failure of the state. This too is ultimately personal, because it affects each and every one of us, especially those historically unrepresented folks who have endured over the decades.
