The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is of great relevance to biological conservation, and is among the areas in South America with the highest levels of diversity and endemism. The aim of this study was to survey the social wasp species in the subfamily Polistinae in Ubatuba, São Paulo state, in southwestern Brazil. Collecting work was conducted from May 2007 to May 2008 using attractive PET bottle traps and active searching. Twenty-one species belonging to eight genera were found, among which some may be considered rare in southeastern Brazil such as Mischocyttarus parallelogrammus and Polybia catillifex. The most abundant species were Agelaia angulata (64.31%), Agelaia nr. centralis (10.08%) and Angiopolybia pallens (8.49%). A correlation between species richness and relative humidity (r = 0.6435; p = 0.0176) was observed. Values of species richness were a little higher in the super humid (Sm = 11) than in the less humid (Sm = 9) season. This suggests that this season may have more favorable environmental conditions for a greater richness of species to found colonies. Despite not having a very high species richness compared with other surveys, the collected species in this study can be considered rare in southeastern Brazil, emphasizing the complexity of the Atlantic Forest biome and its relation to the diversity of wasps.

This study reports 2 years of the population dynamics and reproduction of a small mammal community using the removal method. The study was conducted in a rural area of the Atlantic Forest, in Sumidouro, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The population sizes, age structure and reproduction were studied for the four most common species in the study area. The overall diversity was 1.67 and ranged between 0.8 to 1.67. The species richness was 13 considering the whole study. The most abundant species were the rodents Nectomys squamipes (n = 133), Akodon cursor (n = 74), Oligoryzomys nigripes (n = 25) and the marsupials Didelphis aurita (n = 58) and Philander frenatus (n = 50). Seven other rodents were captured once: Necromys lasiurus, Akodon montensis, Sooretamys angouya, Oecomys catherine, Oxymycterus judex, Euryzygomatomys spinosus and Trinomys iheringi. There were higher peaks for diversity and species richness during the winter (dry) months, probably due to higher food availability. The marsupials had a seasonal reproduction with highest population sizes at the end of the rainy seasons. Nectomys squamipes reproduced mostly during rainy periods. Akodon cursor reproduced predominantly in the winter with the highest population peaks occurring during this season. The analysis of the population dynamics of the rodent species indicated that no species behaved as an agricultural pest, probably due to the heterogeneous landscape of high rotativity of vegetable cultivation. Rodent populations were more susceptible to the removal procedure than marsupial ones.

This study presents data on the composition and species richness of non-flying mammals in the northern part of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, called Núcleo Santa Virgínia (NSV - around 17000 hectares of Atlantic Forest), São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. The species list was based on ca. 660 km of line-transects, 25512 hours of cameras traps, 7740 trap.nights for small mammals, and 394 track-station.days, as well as occasional records and registers from local people (period 2002 to 2009). Based on these complementary methods, a total of 58 species were recorded from the 85-104 possible. Eighteen taxa are listed in the Brazilian endangered species list, 29 in the state list. The high species richness of non-volant mammals and the presence of threatened species show the importance of NSV for the conservation of Atlantic Forest mammals.

Abstract This study describes the use of hair traps as a complementary method to obtain samples for stable isotope analysis from medium- and large-sized mammals. We sampled three protected areas within the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. Traps formed an enclosure of ~16 m2 composed of two barbed-wire strands at different heights, baited with corn, salt, fruits and cinnamon powder. Samples were identified using hair microstructure. We identified 11 species – four globally and six nationally threatened – of which 63.6% were frugivorous. We found high species richness with a small sampling effort, indicating that hair traps can prove useful for isotopic ecology and other applied ecological studies.

The objectives of this study were to identify anthophilous butterflies on psychophilous flowers of four Asteraceae species in an Atlantic Forest fragment in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil, and to determine whether there are species in common with other lepidopteran inventories of the Southeastern and Midwestern regions of Brazil. It is the first inventory of anthophilous butterflies of a semideciduous forest fragment in Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais. A total of 108 species were recorded, representing the fourth largest lepidopteran survey in this State. The results demonstrated that Asteraceae species may be important tools for monitoring anthophilous butterflies. The similarity with other inventories ranged from 1 to 92.55%. Fifteen species were reported for the first time in the State of Minas Gerais, and among them, Melanis alena and Thisbe irenea were observed in this study only.

The study assessed the present vegetation composition of the Proposed Site for the Tarsier Tourism Center (PTTC) at Villa Aurora, Bilar, Bohol and performed a comparative analysis with the existing Tarsier Sanctuary (TS) at Canapnapan, Corella, Bohol. The basis for comparison was the computed importance values, species richness, species dominance, and percent distribution of plants according to self-defined DBH classes. Results showed that both sites had very high species richness and evenness values. Common overstorey and understorey plant species found in both areas were katagpo (Psychotria sp.), sagimsim (Syzygium brevistylum [C. B. Rob]Merr.) and bagauak (Clerodendrum minahassae Teijsm. & Binn.). Apart from sagimsim (Syzygium brevistylum [C.B.Rob.] Merr.), selaginella (Selaginella cuppresina Lin.), and lunas (Lunasia amara Blanco) were also common in the ground vegetation of both areas. Percent distribution of trees according to self-defined DBH classes revealed that PTTC had 87.55% of the total recorded plants with DBH measurements of <10 cm. Our data was found lower by almost 10% from TS. Considerable percentages of trees were also shared in other DBH classes for PTTC. DBH class range of 10-20 cm had 6.88%, while 5.58% was computed for DBH class of >20 cm. Percent distribution of trees on these DBH ranges (especially on DBH class >20 cm) indicated the presence of medium and large trees. The largest DBH measured in the PTTC was 70 cm while in TS was only 22 cm. The proposed 10-ha site in Villa Aurora, Bilar, is suited to be utilized as Tarsier Tourism Center. In case the proposed project is to be pursued, enclosure similar to what has been constructed in Canapnapan, Corella, Bohol, Philippines should also be established to prevent stray animals from predating the captive tarsiers.Keywords: floristic inventory, Philippine tarsier, Bohol, primate conservation, tourism. Inventarisasi flora dari Situs Usulan untuk Sentra Wisata Tarsier di Villa Aurora, Bilar, Bohol, FilipinaAbstractPenelitian ini ditujukan untuk melakukan penilaian komposisi vegetasi dari Usulan Lokasi Pusat Wisata Tarsius (ULPWT) di Villa Aurora, Bilar, Bohol dan melakukan analisis perbandingan antara Tarsier Sanctuary (TS) yang ada di Canapnapan, Corella, Bohol. Dasar perbandingan yang digunakan yaitu dengan menghitung nilai penting, kekayaan spesies, dominansi spesies, dan prosentase distribusi dari tumbuhan berdasarkan kelas diameter yang telah ditentukan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua tempat memiliki kekayaan spesies dan nilai evenness/ kemerataan yang sangat tinggi. Spesies tumbuhan yang umum ditemukan di overstorey dan understorey di kedua area adalah katagpo (Psychotria sp.), sagimsim (Syzygium brevistylum [C. B. Rob]Merr.), dan bagauak (Clerodendrum minahassae Teijsm. & Binn.). Selain itu, sagimsim (Syzygium brevistylum [C.B.Rob.] Merr.), selaginella (Selaginella cuppresina Lin.), dan lunas (Lunasia amara Blanco) juga umum ditemukan di lantai hutan di kedua tempat. Prosentase distribusi dari tumbuhan berdasarkan kelas diameter yang telah ditentukan menunjukkan bahwa ULPWT memiliki 87.55% dari keseluruhan tumbuhan yang tercatat dengan ukuran diameter <10 cm. Data kami menunjukkan bahwa nilai tersebut lebih rendah 10% dari TS. Sebagian persentase dari pohon juga dimiliki di ULPWT pada kelas diameter lainnya. Kelas diameter 10-20 cm memiliki 6,88%, sementara 5,58% terhitung untuk kelas diameter >20 cm. Prosentase distribusi dari pohon pada kisaran ini (khususnya pada diameter >20 cm) menunjukkan adanya kehadiran pohon berukuran medium dan besar. Diameter terbesar yang terukur di ULPWT adalah 70 cm sementara di TS hanya sebesar 22 cm. Lokasi seluas 10 ha di Villa Aurora, Bilar, sesuai untuk digunakan sebagai Pusat Wisata Tarsius. Apabila akan didirikan, maka kandang yang dibangun diharapkan mirip dengan yang telah dibangun di Canapnapan, Corella, Bohol, Pilipina, agar mencegah pemangsaan oleh satwa yang lepas.

ABSTRACT The objective was to present the floristic survey of the bryophytes of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro. It included an evaluation of the species richness, as well as information about the substrate preference of each species and its geographic distributions in Brazil. We found 208 taxa of bryophytes: one hornwort, 88 liverworts and 119 mosses. This richness represents ca. 26% of the bryoflora of Minas Gerais State and ca. 13% of that known for Brazil. Eighteen of the bryophytes species are endemic to Brazil, whereas 19 species are recorded for the first time in Minas Gerais. The bryoflora showed preference for tree bark (30%) and rock (23%) as substrates. Our data show that the Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro is an important area for the diversity conservation of Brazilian bryophytes and maintenance of endemic species of the country.

The diversity of Brazilian vertebrates is regarded among the highest in the world. However, the biological diversity is still mostly unknown and a good part of it is seriously threatened by human activities. This study aimed to inventory the medium and large size mammals present in the Reserva Biológica de Santa Rita do Sapucaí, an Atlantic forest reserve located in Santa Rita do Sapucaí, southeastern Brazil. Sand-plots, photographic traps and searches for animal tracks on pre-existent trails in the area, were carried out once every two months between May 2006 and February 2007. The sand-plots and tracks were inspected during five consecutive days per sampling. We obtained 108 records of 15 species, mostly of carnivorans. Two confirmed species are threatened with extinction in Brazil (Callithrix aurita and Leopardus pardalis). The results suggest that the sampled reserve has high species richness and plays an important role in conservation of mammals in this landscape, including species threatened with extinction.
