The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of wind on the thermal diffusion characteristics of floating production storage and offloading (FSPO) topside models subject to fire. It is motivated by the need to identify the fire loads on FPSO topsides, taking into account the effects of wind speed and direction. The results of an experimental and numerical study undertaken for these purposes are reported here. This paper is part of Phase II of the joint industry project on explosion and fire engineering of FPSOs (EFEF JIP) [1]. An experiment was performed on a 1/14-scale FPSO topside model using a wind tunnel test facility. The locations of the heat source of the fire were varied, as were the speed and direction of the wind, and the temperature distribution was measured. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using the ANSYS CFX program were performed on the test model, with the results obtained compared with the experimental results. It is concluded that wind has a significant effect on the thermal diffusion characteristics of the test model and that the CFD simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. The insights developed in this study will be very useful for the fire engineering of FPSO topsides.

A numerical and experimental study of conduction heat transfer from low power magnetic components with gull wing leads was conducted to determine the effects of distributing the power loss between the core, the winding and the thermal underfill on the thermal resistance. The numerical study was conducted in the power loss ratio range of 0.5⩽PR⩽1.0, where the only active power loss was from the winding at PR=1. In addition, the effect of the thermal underfill material between the substrate and the lower surface of the magnetic package on the thermal performance of the magnetic device was also examined. For comparison, a test was conducted on a magnetic component at PR=1, without thermal underfill. This comparison revealed good agreement between the numerical and experimental results. Finally, a general model was proposed for conduction heat transfer from the surface mount power magnetic packages. The agreement between the model and the experimental results was within 8 percent. AbstractCurrently, the reservoir heterogeneity is a serious challenge for developing oil sands with SAGD method. Nexen’s Long Lake SAGD project reported that breccia interlayer was widely distributed in lower and middle part of reservoir, impeding the steam chamber expansion and heated oil drainage. In this paper, two physical experiments were conducted to study the impact of breccia interlayer on development of steam chamber and production performance. Then, a laboratory scale numerical simulation model was established and a history match was conducted based on the 3D experimental results. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of thickness and permeability of breccia layer was performed. The influence mechanism of breccia layer on SAGD performance was analyzed by comparing the temperature profile of steam chamber and production dynamics. The experimental results indicate that the existence of breccia interlayer causes a thinner steam chamber profile and longer time to reach the peak oil rate. And, the ultimate oil recovery reduced 15.8% due to much oil stuck in breccia interlayer areas. The numerical simulation results show that a lower permeability in breccia layer area has a serious adverse impact on oil recovery if the thickness of breccia layer is larger, whereas the effect of permeability on SAGD performance is limited when the breccia layer is thinner. Besides, a thicker breccia layer can increase the time required to reach the peak oil rate, but has a little impact on the ultimate oil recovery.

The flowfield of a complex three dimensional radial inlet for an industrial pipeline centrifugal compressor has been experimentally determined on a half scale model. Based on the experimental results, inlet guide vanes have been designed to correct pressure and swirl angle distribution deficiencies. The unvaned and vaned inlets are analyzed with a commercially available fully 3D viscous Navier-Stokes code. Since experimental results were available prior to the numerical study, the unvaned analysis is considered a postdiction while the vaned analysis is considered a prediction. The computational results of the unvaned inlet have been compared to the previously obtained experimental results. The experimental method utilized for the unvaned inlet is repeated for the vaned inlet and the data has been used to verify the computational results. The paper will discuss experimental, design and computational procedures, grid generation, boundary conditions, and experimental versus computational methods. Agreement between experimental and computational results is very good, both in prediction and postdiction modes. The results of this investigation indicate that CFD offers a measurable advantage in design, schedule and cost and can be applied to complex, three dimensional radial inlets.

A transonic axial flow compressor undergoes severe vibrations due to instabilities like stall and surge when it operates at lower mass flow rate in the absence of any control devices. In present study, the attempt was made to understand the combine impact of circumferential casing grooves (CCG) of constant aspect ratio and different axial spacing between rotor and stator on the operating stability of single stage transonic axial compressor and that of rotor alone using numerical simulation. The optimum rotor-stator gap in the presence of grooved casing treatment was identified. The steady state numerical analysis was performed by using three-dimensional Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes equation adapting shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model. The study is reported in two sections. First section includes the detailed numerical study on baseline case having smooth casing wall (SCW). The computational results were validated with the experimental results available at Propulsion Division of CSIR-NAL, Bangalore. The computational study shows good agreement with experimental results. The second section comprises the effects of optimum designs of CCG and various axial spacing on the stall margin improvement of transonic compressor. Current computational study shows that the axial spacing between rotor and stator is an important parameter for improvement in stall margin not only for SCW but also for CCG. Therefore, the highest stall margin improvement of 9% has achieved for 75% axial spacing.

A model based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method and leaky dielectric theory is established to predict the deformation and internal flow of the droplet suspended in another vicious fluid under the influence of the electric field. Through coupling with hydrodynamics and electrostatics, the rate of deformation and internal flow of the single droplet are simulated and obtained under the different operating parameters. The calculated results show that the direction of deformation and internal flow depends on the physical properties of fluids. The numerical results are compared with Taylor's theory and experimental results by Torza et al. When the rate of deformation is small, the numerical results are consistent with theory and experimental results, and when the rate is large the numerical results are consistent with experimental results but are different from Taylor's theory. In addition, fluid viscosity hardly affects the deformation rate and mainly dominates the deformation velocity. For high viscosity droplet spends more time to attain the steady state. The conductivity ratio and permittivity ratio of two different liquids affect the direction of deformation. When fluid electric properties change, the charge distribution at the interface is various, which leads to the droplet different deformation shapes.

Applied the finite volume method combining two-equations turbulence model,the influence of fluid dynamic characteristics on XCP probe under different factors be studied The fluid dynamic characteristics were researched under different influencing factors, such as falling speed, rotating rate,seawater density,etc. The drag coefficient under the different falling speeds and the limited velocity of submarine steady motion were obtained. Compared with the experimental results, the simulated results agree well with experimental results, the experiments have show the validity and feasibility of the numerical analysis method. These results will provide theory reference for selecting the reasonable rotating rate, analyzing stability and the movement rule of probe in the water, choosing suitable test parameters for XCP probe of different seawaters.

Earthquake causes wide and severe damage to building structures, due to not just the great ground motion but also secondary actions, such as impact, blast or fire, occurring after earthquake. The extreme combined loading scenario should be considered for safety of buildings and lives. Taking fire for example, the combined load can be considered as an event in which the structures are first partially damaged under an earthquake and then attacked by fire. In order to investigate the post-earthquake loading scenario, it is important to assess the partial damage caused by earthquake on different components of structures. The behavior of welded steel I-beam to hollow square tubular columns is investigated herein. A detailed experimental study is presented in which two groups of unstiffened welded steel connections, with the same configurations, subjected to static and cyclic loading are considered. The flexibility and strength of the connections are measured, while the damage phenomena and failure modes are explored during the tests. The connection damage is found to be a cumulative fracture developing process which leads to significant gradual degradation of the mechanical properties of the connection. The quantificational evaluations of the cyclic loading induced damage are also carried out to investigate the connection damage level according to different loading intensities. A finite element modeling numerical study is also carried out to validate the experimental results and a good agreement is achieved. The test results and FE modeling provide a benchmark data for the unstiffened welded connections and can be used for further investigations of the connections subjected to combined actions such as post-earthquake fire.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the buckling behavior and design method of the ultimate strength for the cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up I-sectional columns under axial compression which failed in distortional buckling and interactive buckling. A total of 56 CFS built-up I-sectional columns subjected to axial compression were tested, and the different buckling modes and ultimate strengths were analyzed in detail by varying the thickness, the length, the spacing of screws, the end fastener group, and the cross-sectional dimensions of CFS built-up I-sectional columns. It was shown in the test that noticeable interaction of local and distortional buckling or interaction of local, distortional, and global buckling was observed for the built-up I-sectional columns with different lengths and cross-sectional dimensions. A finite element model (FEM) was developed and validated with experimental results. A further parametric study has been conducted including different cross sections and slenderness ratios for the built-up I-sectional columns. The load-carrying capacities obtained from the experimental and numerical study were used to investigate the feasibility of the current direct strength method (DSM) when DSM was applied to CFS built-up I-sectional columns. The comparison results showed that the current DSM is not safe for CFS built-up columns failed in distortional buckling and interactive buckling. Therefore, the improved design formulas were proposed, and their accuracy was verified by using finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental results of CFS built-up I-sectional columns subjected to axial compression.
