Nonnutritive sweeteners can be found in many other foods apart from soft drinks. Producers of foodstuffs often use a combination of several sweeteners or sweetener and sugar mixes in a single product mainly to achieve a sweeter taste with a lower calorie count. According to the 2012 Scientific Statement of the American Heart and Diabetes Association, reduction of sugar intake plays an important role in establishing an optimal diet and the maintenance of an appropriate body weight. Controlled intervention studies show that during use of calorie-free sweeteners body weight did not change, moreover, in some cases weight even fell. This was also demonstrated in a recently published summary study of randomized controlled studies, according to which calorie-free sweeteners contributed to both loss and maintenance of body weight. According to the summary of the American Dietetic Association, the use of calorie-free sweeteners does not influence the glycemic response and does not increase postprandial blood glucose levels in diabetics. The results thus far, then, show that the use of nonnutritive sweeteners can reduce the consumption of carbohydrates, by which total calorie intake can also be lowered. Their use can promote weight loss and maintenance as well as can help to improve the values of other metabolic parameters (eg. blood sugar, triglycerides). In addition to this, it is important to note that these benefits will not fully materialize if consumption of nonnutritive sweeteners is accompanied by an increase in compensatory caloric intake. Malnutrition is an important issue in hospitalized patients. Poor nutrition may lead to increased risk of morbidity and death, impaired mental and physical conditions, apathy, depression, self-neglect, increased risk of medical complications, increased risk of pressure ulcers, reduced immune response, delayed wound healing, longer hospital stays, and reduced quality of life. However, few studies have investigated malnutrition in psychiatric patients. Psychiatric patients are known to have an increased risk of malnutrition, but psychiatric hospitals rarely conduct physical examinations and nutritional assessments. In this preliminary study, patients from a psychiatric ward of the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital were chosen using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool. We used the before-and-after analysis to test the effect of a nutrition intervention on the selected parameters. We found that patients who had an impaired nutritional status showed significant increases in body weight (mean: 43.6 ± 7.5 vs. 46.5 ± 8.2 kg; P < 0.001), BMI (mean: 16.8 ± 2.0 vs. 17.9 ± 2.1 kg/m2; P < 0.001), and total calorie intake (mean: 1128 ± 230 vs. 1378 ± 320 Kcal; P < 0.001). Nutritional intervention significantly improved body weight, BMI, and total calorie intake. Nutritional intervention may help prevent malnutrition and improve the management of psychiatric patients.

Background and objectives. Gluten-related disease affects less than 1% population and is not considered of relevance at the public health level. However, the consumption of a gluten-free diet has been most commonly adopted as a special diet worldwide in the recent past. In the present study, we investigated the association of gluten intake and diabetic Wistar albino rats. Methods. Thirty adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: control, diabetic, and test treated with pure gluten (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight). Diabetes was induced in rats by intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) after a dose of nicotinamide (110 mg/kg). Body weight, fasting blood glucose levels, postprandial blood glucose levels and histopathology of the pancreas were compared. Results. Fasting blood glucose levels and postprandial blood glucose were significantly higher in diabetes animals but there were no significant changes in gluten treated groups. Other parameters were not significantly changed among different groups. Conclusions. Gluten at doses 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg is not a diabetogenic diet and hence it needs not be excluded from diet for the prevention and management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract Humans live, eat, and become overweight/obese in complex surroundings where there are many available food choices. Prenatal exposure to poor food choices predisposes offspring to increased negative health risks, including obesity. Many animal experiments have analyzed intergenerational body weight parameters in an environment without food choices, which may not be directly translatable to the human food environment. In this study, offspring from mothers with a defined high-fat diet (HFD) or low-fat diet (LFD) were arbitrarily assigned to either an exclusively LFD or HFD or to a diet where they have a choice between LFD and HFD (choice diet). Offspring displayed negative outcomes of increased body weight, body fat, serum leptin, and blood glucose levels when given the choice diet compared with offspring on the LFD. Conversely, improved energy expenditure was found for offspring given the choice diet compared with offspring from HFD dams given LFD. In addition, maternal diet-specific influences on offspring metabolic parameters were identified, especially in offspring from HFD dams, including positive outcomes of reduced leptin in LFD offspring, reduced corticosterone and cholesterol levels in HFD offspring, and increased exercise levels in choice offspring, as well as the negative outcome of increased calorie intake in LFD offspring from HFD dams. This defined model can now be used as the basis for future studies to characterize the cycle of inter- and intragenerational obesity and whether more realistic diet environments, especially those including choice, can mitigate phenotype.

Aims: Arganimide A (4,4-dihydroxy-3,3-imino-di-benzoic acid) is a compound belonging to a family of aminophenolics found in fruit of Argania spinosa. The purpose of this study was to investigate the glucose and lipid lowering activity of Arganimide A (ARG A). Methods: The effect of a single dose and daily oral administration of Arganimide A (ARG A) on blood glucose levels and plasma lipid profile was tested in normal and streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight. Results: Single oral administration of ARG A reduced blood glucose levels from 26.50±0.61 mmol/L to 14.27±0.73 mmol/L (p<0.0001) six hours after administration in STZ diabetic rats. Furthermore, blood glucose levels were decreased from 5.35±0.30 mmol/L to 3.57±0.17 mmol/L (p<0.0001) and from 26.50±0.61 mmol/L to 3.67±0.29 mmol/L (p<0.0001) in normal and STZ diabetic rats, respectively, after seven days of treatment. Moreover, no significant changes in body weight in normal and STZ rats were shown. According to the lipid profile, the plasma triglycerides levels were decreased significantly in diabetic rats after seven days of ARG treatment (p<0.05). Moreover, seven days of ARG A treatment decreased significantly the plasma cholesterol concentrations (p<0.001). Conclusion: ARG A possesses glucose and lipid-lowering activity in diabetic rats and this natural compound may be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes.

Abstract Background Ethnobotany knowledge in a community has shaped local wisdom in utilizing plants to treat diseases, such as the use of Malaka (Phyllanthus emblica) flesh to treat type 2 diabetes. This study presented evidence that the phenolic extract of the Malaka flesh could reduce blood sugar levels in the diabetic induced rats. Methods The phenolic extract of the P. emblica was administrated to the glucose-induced rats of the Wistar strain Rattus norvegicus for 14 days of treatment where the Metformin was used as a positive control. The data generated were analyzed by the two-way ANOVA Software related to the blood glucose level and by SAS Software related to the histopathological studies at a significant 95% confidence. Results The phenolic extract with concentrations of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight could reduce blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. The post hoc Dunnet test showed that the administration of the extract to the rats with a concentration of 100 mg/kg body weight demonstrated a very significant decrease in blood glucose levels and repaired damaged cells better than administering the extract at a concentration of 200 mg/kg weight body. Conclusion The evidence indicated that the phenolic extract of the Malaka flesh can be utilized as anti type 2 Diabetes mellitus without damaging other organs.

In recent years, many authors have investigated the possible antidiabetic effect of lactic acid bacteria. Lactobacillus species constitute a major part of the lactic acid bacteria group and have been found to exhibit beneficial effects on the development of diabetes and its complications. In the current study, we investigated the effects of newly characterised Bulgarian Lactobacillus strains, Lactobacillus brevis 15 and Lactobacillus plantarum 13, on blood glucose levels and body weight of rats fed a fructose-enriched diet. An experiment was conducted over a period of 8 weeks with 24 2-month-old Wistar rats randomly assigned to receive a standard diet (Con, control group), fructose-enriched diet (Fr group), standard diet with probiotics given twice a week (Pro group), and fructose-enriched diet with probiotics given twice a week (Pro+Fr group). At the end of the experimental period, a statistically significant increase in body weight was observed in all experimental groups (P<0.0001). The highest rise was seen in the fructose group (Fr, 169±19 g), followed by the Pro+Fr group (153±15 g), Pro group (149±13 g), and Con group (141±5 g). Moreover, the final blood glucose levels had risen significantly in the groups receiving fructose either without (Fr; P<0.0001) or with lactobacilli (Pro+Fr; P=0.002), while the rise was insignificant in the group of rats given probiotic supplementation only (Pro, P=0.071) and inexistent in the Con group (P=0.999). The highest elevation of blood glucose levels was observed in the Fr group (3.18 mmol/l), followed by the Pro+Fr group (2.00 mmol/l) whereas the Pro group showed the lowest levels (0.60 mmol/l). The results of our study suggest that the newly characterised Bulgarian Lactobacillus strains, L. brevis 15 and L. plantarum 13, could be considered as possible probiotics and might be able to prevent some metabolic disturbances.

Objective: The concept of the synergistic effect of poly-herbalism was as old as medicine history. Present novel polyherbal formulation (PHF) composed of five different herbs. The present investigation aimed to evaluate the synergistic therapeutic hypoglycemic potential of PHF against streptozotocin (STZ) (60 mg/kg b.w, ip)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: For this therapeutic study, the dose was framed orally once a day to the test objects after STZ dosing at 500 mg/kg/5 ml dosage levels for 21 days. The transformation of body weight and blood glucose level was examined, and the histopathological changes of beta cells of the pancreas, cellular architectures of liver and kidney were also perceived after scarification of the objects. Results: The outcomes were compared to that of glibenclamide (5 mg/kg) treated group. Declines of body weight and blood glucose levels were perceived in STZ-induced diabetic animals very significantly (p<0.01 or p<0.05). However, these diabetic changes were significantly (p<0.01 or p<0.05) decreased in PHF-dosing groups revealed more encouraging effects compared to that of glibenclamide. In the other hand, various liver function and enzymes test (creatinine, urea, total bilirubin, total albumin, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, aspartate transaminases, and alanine transaminases) and lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total protein, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and very LDL) studies strongly indicate the potential action of this novel formulation. Conclusions: It is deliberated that PHF has the favorable effect to normalize the blood glucose levels, and also rejuvenation and reproduction of beta cells lead a better futuristic ant diabetic therapy for diabetic management.
