Abstract Non-reinforced and reinforced Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone (PEEK) plastics have excellent mechanical and thermal properties. Machining is an efficient process that can be used to manufacture specific mechanical parts made from PEEK composites. Researchers have focused on improving the performance of machining operations with the aim of minimizing costs and improving quality of manufactured products, in order to get the best surface roughness and the minimum cutting force. The parameters evaluated are the cutting speed, the depth of cut and the feed rate. In this paper, the effect of the mentioned parameters on surface roughness and cutting force, in dry turning of reinforced PEEK with 30% of carbon fibers (PEEK CF30) using TiN coated cutting tools, is analyzed through using robust design techniques such as Taguchi's design method, signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and statistical analysis tools such as Pareto-ANOVA. The obtained results have shown that Taguchi method and Pareto ANOVA are suitable for optimizing the cutting parameters with the minimum possible number of experiments, and the optimized process parameters were determined for surface roughness and cutting force criteria.

Stainless steels have gained much attention to be an alternative solution for many manufacturing industries due to their high mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, owing to their high ductility, their low thermal conductivity and high tendency to work hardening, these materials are classed as materials difficult to machine. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to examine the effect of cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut on the response parameters including surface roughness (Ra), tangential cutting force (Fz) and cutting power (Pc) during dry turning of AISI 316L using TiCN-TiN PVD cermet tool. As a methodology, the Taguchi L27 orthogonal array parameter design and response surface methodology (RSM)) have been used. Statistical analysis revealed feed rate affected for surface roughness (79.61%) and depth of cut impacted for tangential cutting force and cutting power (62.12% and 35.68%), respectively. According to optimization analysis based on desirability function (DF), cutting speed of 212.837 m/min, 0.08 mm/rev feed rate and 0.1 mm depth of cut were determined to acquire high machined part quality

A series of milling experiments with and without cutting fluid, arranged by uniform design method, were carried out on rotor material. The influence of cutting fluid on cutting force and surface roughness was explored and compared for the two kinds of conditions. The associated model was established between cutting force & surface roughness and cutting parameters according to the linear multivariable regression method. The results show that the cutting force deceases with the increase of the cutting speed or with the decrease of the feed per tooth and the cutting depth. Cutting fluid has little effect on cutting force, and for surface roughness, the influence of cutting fluid is uncertain.

In the current paper, cutting parameters during turning of AISI 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel are studied and optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and the desirability approach. The cutting tool inserts used in this work were the CVD coated carbide. The cutting speed (vc), the feed rate (f) and the depth of cut (ap) were the main machining parameters considered in this study. The effects of these parameters on the surface roughness (Ra), cutting force (Fc), the specific cutting force (Kc), cutting power (Pc) and the Material Removal Rate (MRR) were analyzed by ANOVA analysis. The results showed that f is the most important parameter that influences Ra with a contribution of 89.69 %, while ap was identified as the most significant parameter (46.46%) influence the Fc followed by f (39.04%). Kc is more influenced by f (38.47%) followed by ap (16.43%) and Vc (7.89%). However, Pc is more influenced by Vc (39.32%) followed by ap (27.50%) and f (23.18%).The Quadratic mathematical models, obtained by the RSM, presenting the evolution of Ra, Fc, Kc and Pc based on (vc, f, and ap) were presented. A comparison between experimental and predicted values presents good agreements with the models found.Optimization of the machining parameters to achieve the maximum MRR and better Ra was carried out by a desirability function. The results showed that the optimal parameters for maximal MRR and best Ra were found as (vc = 350 m/min, f = 0.088 mm/rev, and ap = 0.9 mm).

In this study, the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite material was drilled using different parameters ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] Point Angle, 30, 60 and [Formula: see text] cutting speed and 0.06, 0.08 and [Formula: see text] feed rate). Experimental parameters were designed according to full factorial design method and the results were analyzed using Taguchi L18 experimental design. The results of the study show that the lowest surface roughness values are 0.1958 and [Formula: see text]m with the cutting speed of 90 [Formula: see text] and feed rate of [Formula: see text] in the Point angles of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. When the results of Anova analysis were evaluated, parameters (feed speed, cutting speed and end point angle) according to the effect ratios on surface roughness were formed at the rates of 41.06%, 33.13% and 5.07%, respectively. The most suitable parameters according to S/N ratios were determined using A2B3C1 factors for the average surface roughness.

Abstract In the present study, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on cutting forces (feed force, thrust force and cutting force) and surface roughness in milling of Quartz glas using diamond wheel. The cutting process in the up-cut milling of glass is discussed and the cutting force measured. The cutting force gradually increases with the cutter rotation at the beginning of the cut, and oscillates about a constant mean value after a certain undeformed chip thickness. The results show that cutting forces and surface roughness do not vary much with experimental cutting speed in the range of 55–93 m/min. The suggested models of cutting forces and surface roughness and adequately map within the limits of the cutting parameters considered.

The method of single point diamond turning is used to machine KDP crystal. A regression analysis is adopted to construct a prediction model for surface roughness and cutting force, which realizes the purposes of pre-machining design, prediction and control of surface roughness and cutting force. The prediction model is utilized to analyze the influences of feed, cutting speed and depth of cut on the surface roughness and cutting force. And the optimal cutting parameters of KDP crystal on such condition are acquired by optimum design. The optimum estimated values of surface roughness and cutting force are 7.369nm and 0.15N, respectively .Using the optimal cutting parameters, the surface roughness Ra, 7.927nm, and cutting force, 0.19N, are obatained.

In the machining of metal cutting, cutting tools are the main things that must be considered. Using improper cutting parameters can cause damage to the cutting tool. The damage is Built-Up Edge (BUE). The situation is undesirable in the metal cutting process because it can interfere with machining, and the surface roughness value of the workpiece becomes higher. This study aimed to determine the effect of cutting speed on BUE that occurred and the cutting strength caused. Five cutting speed variants are used. Observation of the BUE process is done visually, whereas to determine the size of BUE using a digital microscope. If a cutting tool occurs BUE, then the cutting process is stopped, and measurements are made. This study uses variations in cutting speed consisting of cutting speed 141, 142, 148, 157, 163, and 169 m/min, and depth of cut 0.4 mm. From the results of the study were obtained that the biggest feeding force is at cutting speed 141 m/min at 347 N, and the largest cutting force value is 239 N with the dimension of BUE length: 1.56 mm, width: 1.35 mm, high: 0.56mm.

Three cutting tools of different materials (ceramics CC6050, cubic boron nitride CB7025, carbide GC2025) are used for dry turning of 9 groups of ADI which heat-treated under different quenching time and quenching temperature. The surface roughness of ADI workpieces were tested after the finish turning at changed cutting parameters, and the influencing factors of surface quality were analysed. Results showed that the surface roughness values of all 9 groups of ADI workpieces obtained by CC6050 were the lowest and the surface quality was better at lower depth of cut ap and feed rate f with higher cutting speed vc . Meanwhile, the surface roughness was influenced by the isothermal quenching parameters of ADI workpieces significantly.
