For the first time at the Riga Technical University a study was carried out of a highly defective frog core of grade 1/9. In the course of the research an analysis of crossing piece defects on the Latvian railway was carried out in eight railway sections during years of 2015, 2016, 2017. The defect of the frog core of grade 1/9 (the 60 E1 DO 07 12 frog type) was considered according to the basic classification of the defects, and the analysis and research of the cause of its fracture were conducted from the bolt hole to the web and the base of the frog core. The research process consisted of four stages:  Stage 1: determination of metal hardness according to the Brinell scale with a modern device “Tinius O Olsen” Firmware Version 1.07, FH - 31 Series. The obtained results should be compared with the data of the manufacturer's factory – Dowlais Steel.  Stage 2: determination of the chemical composition of the rail steel of the frog core 1/9 (in the rail top, rail web, and rail base) using the ARC-MET 8000 Mobile Lab Optical Emission Spectometer Analyser. The obtained data should be compared with the manufacturer's data.  Stage 3: determination of the rail steel structure. Drawing of main conclusions about the quality of the rail steel of the frog core of grade 1/9.  Stage 4: drawing of main conclusions and summary of the cause and development of the fracture from the bolt hole of the frog core of grade 1/9.

Abstract In the present study, machine learning (ML) methods for the identification of abnormal glow curves (GC) of CaSO4:Dy-based thermoluminescence dosimeters in individual monitoring are presented. The classifier algorithms, random forest (RF), artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) are employed for identifying not only the abnormal glow curve but also the type of abnormality. For the first time, the simplest and computationally efficient algorithm based on RF is presented for GC classifications. About 4000 GCs are used for the training and validation of ML algorithms. The performance of all algorithms is compared by using various parameters. Results show a fairly good accuracy of 99.05% for the classification of GCs by RF algorithm. Whereas 96.7% and 96.1% accuracy is achieved using ANN and SVM, respectively. The RF-based classifier is recommended for GC classification as well as in assisting the fault determination of the TLD reader system.

Abstract In selecting methods for determination of rubber to cord bond strength it is necessary to consider the factors which are subject to variation in the system— the type of cord, the composition of the vulcanized rubber, or the composition of the impregnant. The selection (composition) of the methods of assessment of bond strength was carried out in the present study while keeping the type of cord and the rubber compositions constant ; only the composition of the impregnant was varied. Up to the present there has been no single laboratory method for evaluating rubber to cord bond strength for the determination of the service quality of rubber-fabric structures. The bond strength in such a system is assessed in the majority of cases by the use of a series of methods. The existing methods may be systematized according to the nature of the deformation (static or dynamic), the nature of the specimen (with single thread of cord or with cord fabric) and so on. We adopted the following classification of methods: 1). Determination of bond strength of a single thread of cord with the rubber; 2). Determination of bond strength of rubber to fabric model specimens. Determination of bond strength of a single thread of cord with rubber is an exceptionally widely used type of testing in the rubber industry. It is based either on the principle of stripping of a single thread of cord from the rubber under pressure, or on the principle of pull-out of a thread of cord from a rubber specimen.

How does the sleeping brain process external stimuli, and in particular, up to which extent does the sleeping brain detect and process modifications in its sensory environment? In order to address this issue, we investigated brain reactivity to simple auditory stimulations during sleep in young healthy subjects. Electroencephalogram signal was acquired continuously during a whole night of sleep while a classical oddball paradigm with duration deviance was applied. In all sleep stages, except Sleep Stage 4, a mismatch negativity (MMN) was unquestionably found in response to deviant tones, revealing for the first time preserved sensory memory processing during almost the whole night. Surprisingly, during Sleep Stage 2 and paradoxical sleep, both P3a-like and P3b-like components were identified after the MMN, whereas a P3a alone followed the MMN in wakefulness and in Sleep Stage 1. This totally new result suggests elaborated processing of external stimulation during sleep. We propose that the P3b-like response could be associated to an active processing of the deviant tone in the dream's consciousness.

The problems discussed in the study are connected with evaluation of complex technical systems functioning, in particular, transport systems. It was assumed that evaluation of their functioning depends on fulfilment degree of selected criteria. Therefore, it is important to determine a set of criteria including their type, number and importance. Since the research object is a public city transport system considered to be a sociotechnical system of the type: human (driver) –machine (vehicle) and the environment <H-M-E>, the criteria to be used for the assessment must include behavior of humans, operation of transport means, and the environmental impact. Thus, selection and determination of importance of significant, time variable, measurable and independent characteristics whose values, in a given time moment or a given time interval, define fulfillment degree of the criteria provide the basis for evaluation of such systems functioning. The quality of technical systems functioning in time is assessed on the basis of the criteria fulfilment degree or comparison and classification of different systems of the same type. It needs to be emphasized that the choice of optimal methods for selection of relevant criteria and determination of their impact on the analyzed system functioning is the research subject of study.

The article presents changes in the quality of tap water depending on time spent in installation and its impact on the creation of biofilms on various materials (polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chrome-nickel steel and galvanized steel). For the first time, quantitative analyses of biofilm were performed using methods such as: Adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) measurement, flow cytometry, heterotrophic plate count and using fractographical parameters. In the water, after leaving the experimental installation, the increase of turbidity, content of organic compounds, nitrites and nitrates was found, as well as the decrease in the content of chlorine compounds, dissolved oxygen and phosphorus compounds. There was an increase in the number of mesophilic and psychrophilic bacteria. In addition, the presence of Escherichia coli was also found. The analysis of the quantitative determination of microorganisms in a biofilm indicates that galvanized steel is the most susceptible material for the adhesion of microorganisms. These results were also confirmed by the analysis of the biofilm morphology. The roughness profile, the thickness of the biofilm layer can be estimated at about 300 μm on galvanized steel.

Morphological data on the larvae of 37 species of freshwater mites (Hydrachnidia) known from springs in Luxembourg are reported. Larvae of Sperchon insignis (Walter, 1906), S. longissimus K.Viets, 1920, Lebertia holsatica K. Viets, 1920, Atractides fonticolus (K.Viets, 1920) and, with a question mark, A. pennatus (K.Viets, 1920) are described for the first time; re-descriptions are presented for Sperchon squamosus Kramer, 1879 and S. setiger Thor, 1898. Previous larval descriptions are listed and commented on for all species. Two species are recorded as new for the Luxembourgian fauna: Panisellus thienemanni (K.Viets, 1920) and Pseudofeltria scourfieldi Soar, 1904. A further taxon previously not recorded from springs in Luxembourg is described, probably Tiphys Koch, 1836 sp. An illustrated key is presented suitable for the determination of most parasitic water mite larvae attached to insect hosts from Luxembourgian springs.

Abstract Background: Polygonum Cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc. (named Huzhang in China) is a traditional and popular Chinese medicinal herb used in removing jaundice, clearing heat-toxin, improving blood circulation, expelling stasis, dispelling wind and dampness, repelling phlegm, and suppressing cough. It is widely used in drug and functional food fields and distributed throughout the world, including in China, Japan, and North America. Objective: To control the quality of Polygonum Cuspidatum, an effective, reliable, and simple method for simultaneous determination of two stilbenes (polydatin, resveratrol) and four anthraquinones (emodin, physcion, rhein, and anthraglycoside B) was developed and validated for the first time in this study by reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC). Methods: Separation was carried out on Agilent C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm I.D., 5 μm) with acetonitrile and 0.10% aqueous phosphoric acid as mobile phase and gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. Detection was conducted with mobile wavelength at 30°C. Results: Good validation of the method including linearity, precision, repeatability, and recovery was performed. The contents of the studied analytes are significantly different, and resveratrol and rhein in particular existed in greater fluctuation among the samples. Conclusion: A simple, reliable, and sensitive method has been successfully established and applied to the analysis for simultaneous determination of the target compounds in 11 batches of samples. Highlights: Separation and quantitative analysis of two stilbenes and four anthraquinones from P. cuspidatum were developed by RP-HPLC. This method is convenient, sensitive, and accurate and can provide a reliable basis for further applications of P. cuspidatum in drug or food fields.
