The results of long-term entomological observations at nurseries and in the collection greenhouse of PABSI are presented. The species composition of pests in the collections of open and closed ground of flower and ornamental plants in thePolar-AlpineBotanical gardenwas determined. The dominant invertebrates in nurseries are: Deroceras reticulatum Mtill., Eriophyes padi (Nal), Macrosiphum rosae L., Philaenus spumarius L., Gonioctena quinquepunctata F., Gonioctena pallida L., in greenhouses - Brevipalpus obovatus Donn., Neomyzus circumflexus Buckt., Myzodes persicae Sulz., Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis Bouche. Long-term observations of the state of flower and ornamental plants in greenhouses have shown that not only the species composition changes, but also the status of pests. An important role in the formation of the artificial biocenosis of the greenhouse is played by the food preferences of phytophages. Regular surveys revealed the presence of pests on plants of 41 families. The distribution of plants by the degree of pest population depending on the life form is presented. The most actively populated by the species of tree and shrub groups. The presented species composition of pests of flower and ornamental plants of open and closed ground can not be considered definitively studied, since changes in the trophic relationships of pests were noted during the study period.

Purpose. Analysis of species and varietal diversity of the genus Salvia L. cultivated flora of the world, including Ukraine; prognostic assessment and determination of the directions of ornamental representatives of the genus introduction to the conditions of the Forest-steppe of Ukraine. Methods. Analysis and synthesis, comparison and generalization of information data, introduction forecast. Results. The modern assortment of the genus Salvia is presented in quantitative, taxonomic, arealogical and ecological-cenotic terms. Belonging of the species of the genus to 6 main centers of origin of cultivated plants was determined, and a significant diversity of life forms (nanophanerophytes, microphanerophytes, hamephites, hemicryptophytes, theophytes), naturally formed under the influence of factors determined by different geographical and ecological-phytocenotic conditions of plant growth was reflected. Species assortment of the genus Salvia from the collection fund of the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was analyzed in comparison with the collections of other Ukrainian botanical gardens. The list of decorative species of the collection, found in the natural flora of Ukraine, was given. Three groups of species have been identified by origin, what determines the conditions for plant cultivation in the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. In terms of taxonomic structure, introduced sage species belong to eight (according to Bentham, 1833) out of twelve sections, which represent biomorphological diversity and confirm the high introduction potential of these plants.  The species and interspecific hybrids most fully used in breeding work and represented by a significant varietal diversity were distinguished, as well as the sage assortment of the collection of ornamental plants of the NBG was presented. Conclusions. It has been revealed that the species and varietal diversity of the genus Salvia of the world cultivated flora has a significant introduction potential for the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. It was determined that the main base for the introduction of the ornamental species of the genus Salvia in Ukraine is the collection of the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The main directions of further introduction and breeding work with representatives of the genus Salvia in the Forest-Steppe conditions of Ukraine were highlighted.

The article deals with one of the most relevant topics of the modern city and ecology - the problem of landscaping in Volgograd. The city is characterized by an industrial urbanism, with a high concentration of population, saturation of production facilities and vehicles, which contributes to a high level of negative impact on the environment. The pace of greening of the city lags behind the pace of construction of the residential sector, and the existing green spaces do not meet the sanitary and hygienic, aesthetic requirements. The prospects of this problem are determined, the existing green spaces are considered, data on the climatic conditions of the city and the ecological situation are given. Improvement in the field of landscaping is associated with the scientifically sound placement of green spaces, taking into account all the factors that affect the growth and development of plants in the urban environment. Unfortunately, due to the uneven distribution of the assortment of trees and shrubs, the species composition of the central streets and squares of the city is extremely poor. The study focuses on the role of the botanical garden in urban landscaping and aims to create recommendations for the sorting of tree and shrub plants for urban landscaping. As a result of the analysis of the assortment of ornamental plants of the open ground of the botanical garden, the article proposed species and varieties of woody and shrubby plants that have passed the introduction tests for more than 5-10 years. Recommendations for sorting are aimed at improving the ecological situation of the city and greening the recreation areas of citizens. The proposed list of tree and shrub species cannot fully solve the problem of greening the city, but it will help to significantly enrich the composition of tree and shrub plants.

In September 1999, royal ferns (Osmunda regalis L.) at a South Carolina wholesale nursery were found to be infected by foliar nematodes. Lesions were brown, vein-limited, and often fan shaped. As severity increased, affected leaflets became totally necrotic. Nematodes were extracted by excising and dicing symptomatic leaf sections and placing them in water for up to 24 h. Ten adult nematodes from each of two fern plants were examined microscopically and determined to be Aphelenchoides fragariae (Ritzema Bos) Christie. This is the first report of this nematode infecting royal fern. In August 1996, leaves from several cultivars of Hosta spp. with yellow to tan, vein-limited lesions were submitted from The South Carolina Botanical Garden (Clemson, SC) to the Clemson University Plant Problem Clinic for diagnosis. Nematodes were extracted and examined as described above and identified as A. fragariae. This is the first report of this nematode infecting Hosta spp. in South Carolina. Since 1996, foliar nematodes have been recovered from hostas at several wholesale nurseries in South Carolina. Aphelenchoides spp. also have been detected previously in commercially produced ornamental plants in South Carolina, including a Begonia sp. in 1988; Polygonum bistorta L. ‘Super-bum’ (snakeweed) in 1997; and a Polystichum sp. (holly fern) in 1997. All plants exhibited angular or vein-limited, necrotic lesions typical of foliar nematode infections.

Restoration of grasslands became important in the Central Stavropol region in the middle of the last century. The reason was an increased anthropogenic effect: plowing, industrial and civil engineering, cattle grazing and erosion. Experiments on turf introduction got started at the Stavropol Botanical Garden in 1963 to preserve and restore the unique natural steppe area with a large number of valuable and rare species. Fragments of steppe were grown on 2 ha area from 1963 to 1984. The investigation focused on ecosystem conditions, species composition, botanical groups and yield. Natural steppes performed as controls (Buchinka, Strizhament, Novomaryevskaya Polyana) having similar dominant species as the trial areas. Control areas contained 6592 species, the restored ones 83103. There were 4472 different grass species grown. Proportions of gramineous averaged to 31.9446.17, grass mixtures 29.4041.64, grassland litter 7.6128.64. Contents of legumes varied within 0.8511.01, sedge 0.113.83. Grass productivity of the restored area was high 3.243.97 t ha-1. It exceeded the one of the natural areas by 0.611.65 t ha-1.
