Study of electrophysiological indicators of the condition and behavior of plants has become more important in the development of farming activities and the search for effective ways to improve the productivity of crops. The influence of external light on the adaptive ability of corn leaf cells to rhythmic cold stimulation was determined experimentally. The method of rhythmic cold stimulation is not adequate for the studied plants, but its application allows us to evaluate the stability of plant cells to external stimuli. The method consists in repeating irritation during the time period of less duration than the relative refractory phase, which causes a response of less than the previous amplitude. Because of this in the system there is a negative feedback that leads to stabilization of the amplitude of biopotentials that are registered. Rhythmic cold stimulation was applied to the leaf with the help of a quick-response thermostimulator. Rhythmic cold stimuli and settings of pulses were set by computer software. Cooling temperature was controlled using miniature differential thermocouple. Potentials of the leaf surface were diverted by an unpolarized macroelectrode and after a preamplifier fed to the input of the USB oscilloscope connected to the computer. Analysis of the results of experiments was performed using automated developed software. As a result, we experimentally established that rhythmic stimulation of leaves by cold leads to stabilization of responding potential. The level of stabilization depends on the frequency of cold stimuli and describes the adaptive properties of the system causing the biopotential. We found that the absence of photosynthesis when there is a deficit outdoor lighting leads to a significant increase in the average level of stabilized responses, indicating increased stability of the system to external influences. The maximum of this increase fell on the fourth day. This increase is likely to be due to the restructuring of functional ion transport through cell membranes, generating potentials registered. In the interval 4–9th days there was a significant decrease in stabilization, probably due to adaptation of plant cells to a lack of light, or depletion of ATP, which provides the active transport of ions across the cell membrane.

The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the impact and behavior of the community on post-disaster economic conditions in the city of Palu and to know the local government's public policies in handling these cases. Using qualitative methods with a case study approach, literature study, and secondary data processing from various social elements. In addition, data collection was carried out by interviewing informants who felt the direct impact of the earthquake, tsunami and liquefaction in Palu, Sigi and Donggala. The results showed that the post-disaster impact felt by the people of Palu City was generally in the "severe" classification. The socio-economic conditions of the people of Palu include several aspects, ranging from the geographical conditions that are in disaster-prone zones, to the extremely poor health conditions after the disaster. The conclusion of this research shows that the escalation of natural disasters in the city of Palu is considered quite large because it consists of three types of disasters, namely the Earthquake, Tsunami and Liquifation in the same time period. Palu City is the capital of the Province as well as the economic and administrative center of Central Sulawesi Province. Damage to warehousing infrastructure coupled with massive looting from unscrupulous people in logistics supply warehouses resulted in goods that were supposed to be distributed both to the city and the district finally unable to be implemented.

Abstract Glucocorticoid hormone levels vary within a forager based upon environmental stressors such as illumination and riskier habitats, and a forager’s response to environmental variables depends upon its glucocorticoid levels. Here, we report on a laboratory experiment in which we manipulated cortisol in Allenbyi’s gerbils (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi) to test the relationship between cortisol and behavior. We then quantified the resulting blood cortisol levels and feeding behavior in gerbils. Thirty gerbils were injected with 21-day slow-release cortisol pellets drawn from 5 different dosages. We quantified the physiological response to pellet implantation in gerbils by measuring cortisol level in blood serum using ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay). We fed gerbils daily by mixing millet seeds into the sand inside rodent cages and measured the remaining seeds the following day to quantify feeding efforts. Some evidence supports that subcutaneous supplementation of glucocorticoids (GCs) in the gerbils led to higher blood serum levels. Cortisol levels varied according to time period of measurement. Gerbils that received lower dosages consumed most of the food presented to them when compared to those receiving the highest doses. In this manner, we delineate a pattern on cortisol hormone level variation over time following dosing and consequences in feeding behavior.

DELLA transcriptional regulators are central components in the control of plant growth responses to the environment. This control is considered to be mediated by changes in the metabolism of the hormones gibberellins (GAs), which promote the degradation of DELLAs. However, here we show that warm temperature or shade reduced the stability of a GA-insensitive DELLA allele inArabidopsis thaliana. Furthermore, the degradation of DELLA induced by the warmth preceded changes in GA levels and depended on the E3 ubiquitin ligase CONSTITUTIVELY PHOTOMORPHOGENIC1 (COP1). COP1 enhanced the degradation of normal and GA-insensitive DELLA alleles when coexpressed inNicotiana benthamiana.DELLA proteins physically interacted with COP1 in yeast, mammalian, and plant cells. This interaction was enhanced by the COP1 complex partner SUPRESSOR OFphyA-1051 (SPA1). The level of ubiquitination of DELLA was enhanced by COP1 and COP1 ubiquitinated DELLA proteins in vitro. We propose that DELLAs are destabilized not only by the canonical GA-dependent pathway but also by COP1 and that this control is relevant for growth responses to shade and warm temperature.

The stability of total (t) and free (f) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in male serum specimens stored at –70°C or lower temperature for 4.7 to 4.9 years was studied. Until now, the stability of these analytes in serum has not been evaluated systematically beyond 2 years of storage at –70°C. Aliquots of frozen serum were thawed in 2001 and 2006 and assayed for tPSA and fPSA using a Dade Behring Dimension(r) RxL analyzer and reagents. tPSA values ranged from 0.07 to 69.94 and 0.00 to 69.83 ng/mL in 2001 and 2006, respectively, whereas fPSA values for the tested specimens ranged from 0.02 to 5.72 and 0.00 to 5.92, respectively. Deming regression analyses showed agreement in assay values over time as tPSA values yielded a slope of 1.0112 and a y-intercept of 0.0195; fPSA values produced a slope 1.0538 and a y-intercept of –0.0442; f/tPSA values yielded a slope of 0.9631 and a y-intercept of 0.1195. A Bland-Altman analysis of the data demonstrated analyte and ratio stability over this time period. We conclude that serum, when collected properly and stored at –70°C or lower temperature, may be used for tPSA and fPSA clinical studies for at least 5 years after collection.

A diverse set of 320 compounds from the Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals organic compound repository was prepared as 20-mM DMSO solutions and stored at 4°C under argon in pressurized canisters to simulate a low-humidity environment. The plates were subjected to 25 freeze/thaw cycles while being exposed to ambient atmospheric conditions after each thaw to simulate the time and manner by which compound plates are exposed to the atmosphere during typical liquid-handling and high-throughput screening processes. High-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry with evaporative light-scattering detection was used to quantitate the amount of compound remaining after every 5th freeze/thaw cycle. Control plates were stored either at room temperature under argon or at 4°C under argon without freeze/thaw cycling and were evaluated at the midpoint and the endpoint of the study. The study was conducted over a short time period (i.e., 7 weeks) to minimize the effect of compound degradation over time due to the exposure of the compounds to DMSO.The results from this study will be used to determine the maximum number of freeze/thaw cycles that can be achieved while maintaining acceptable compound integrity.(Journal of Biomolecular Screening 2003:210-215)

Visual hallucinations are sensory perceptions that occur without external stimuli. Moxifloxacin-induced visual hallucinations are very rarely reported (<0.1%). We describe a 66-year-old woman, without any known neuropsychiatric disorder or illicit drug abuse, who experienced complex visual hallucinations, mood, and behavioral alterations secondary to peroral 1 dose of moxifloxacin treatment that persisted for approximately 36 hours. In addition, a sudden increase in her blood glucose level was noted which also improved a few days after discontinuation of moxifloxacin treatment. Although very rare, it should be kept in mind that moxifloxacin may coincidentally induce neuropsychiatric adverse effects and hyperglycemia. Clinicians should be alert to recognize such uncommon offending adverse drug reactions.

Effective stability constants for cysteine and lysine with five different iron sources were evaluated along with their behavior in solution. The values obtained for ferric chloride-cysteine, ferrous sulfate-cysteine, ferric chloride-lysine, ferrous sulfate-lysine, hydrogen-reduced lysine, and electrolytic-reduced lysine were 6.81 × 102 to 2.78 × 103, 1.33 × 105 to 1.36 × 105, 6.00 × 10−4 to 7.64 × 10−3, 6.37 ×10−4 to 4.82× 10−3, 9.34 × 10−2 to 1.38 × 10−1, and 4.18 × 10−4 to 7.27 × 10−4, respectively. No measurable complexation occurred with hydrogen- and electrolytic-reduced iron with cysteine nor with ferric orthophosphate and cysteine or lysine. The stability of soluble ferric cysteine over the pH range 2.0 to 7.4 indicates that this complex has the potential to be used as an iron additive in food. Approximately half of the hydrogen and electrolytic reduced iron and only 0.11% of ferric orthophosphate were soluble in acid, whereas ferric chloride and ferrous sulfate were completely soluble. Qualitative evaluation of the iron-amino acid systems over a range of pH from 2.0 to 12.0 indicated that there was a mixed valence state of free iron in most cases with low pH favoring reduction and high pH oxidation, until precipitation of iron hydroxides occurred.

The cerebral cortex needs to maintain information for long time periods while at the same time being capable of learning and adapting to changes. The degree of stability of physiological signals in the human brain in response to external stimuli over temporal scales spanning hours to days remains unclear. Here, we quantitatively assessed the stability across sessions of visually selective intracranial field potentials (IFPs) elicited by brief flashes of visual stimuli presented to 27 subjects. The interval between sessions ranged from hours to multiple days. We considered electrodes that showed robust visual selectivity to different shapes; these electrodes were typically located in the inferior occipital gyrus, the inferior temporal cortex, and the fusiform gyrus. We found that IFP responses showed a strong degree of stability across sessions. This stability was evident in averaged responses as well as single-trial decoding analyses, at the image exemplar level as well as at the category level, across different parts of visual cortex, and for three different visual recognition tasks. These results establish a quantitative evaluation of the degree of stationarity of visually selective IFP responses within and across sessions and provide a baseline for studies of cortical plasticity and for the development of brain-machine interfaces.

The stability of the motion of viscous incompressible fluid, of density ρ and kinematic viscosity ν, between two infinitely long coaxial circular cylinders, of radiiaanda+d, whered/ais small, is investigated mathematically by the method of small oscillations. The inner cylinder is rotating with angular velocity ω and the outer one with angular velocity αω, and there is a constant pressure gradient parallel to the axis. The fluid therefore has a component velocityWparallel to the axis, in addition to the velocity round the axis. A disturbance is assumed which is symmetrical about the axis and periodic along it. The critical disturbance, which neither increases nor decreases with the time, is periodic with respect to the time (except whenW= 0, when the critical disturbance is a steady motion). As Reynolds number of the flow we take ||d/ν, whereis the average value ofWacross the annulus, and we denote bylthe wave-length of the disturbance along the axis, by σ/2π the time period of the critical flow, bycthe wavelength of the critical flow, byωcthe critical value of ω, and we putapproximately, if α is not nearly equal to 1.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are tiny posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression in metazoan cells, where activity and abundance of miRNAs are tightly controlled. Regulated turnover of these regulatory RNAs is important to optimize cellular response to external stimuli. We report that the stability of mature miRNAs increases inversely with cell proliferation, and the increased number of microribonucleoproteins (miRNPs) in growth-restricted mammalian cells are in turn associated with polysomes. This heightened association of miRNA with polysomes also elicits reduced degradation of target mRNAs and impaired extracellular export of miRNA via exosomes. Overall polysome sequestration contributes to an increase of cellular miRNA levels but without an increase in miRNA activity. Therefore miRNA activity and turnover can be controlled by subcellular distribution of miRNPs that may get differentially regulated as a function of cell growth in mammalian cells.
