This study presents the results of a long term study of nesting colonies of the Caspian gull (Larus cachinnans Pallas, 1811) on the islands of the Molochniy Liman and in Obitochnaya Bay (Azov Sea), in the South of Ukraine (Zaporizhia region), conducted between 1988 and 2013. A description of the size and coloring of eggs of Caspian gull was conducted by generally accepted methods. We measured 1000 eggs from 5 colonies of Caspian gulls. The background coloration of the eggs’ shells was classified into 7 types, the pattern of markings on the surface of the shells was classified into 4 types. In the nesting colonies, comprising different nesting settlements, the study tested differences in the distribution of typical and atypical coloring types and patterns on the surface of the shells. The background color and character of the shell marking patterns is dominated by eggs of phenotypes 3 and 4: gray-green, with a pattern of spots, of medium size (5–60%) and brown, with a pattern of large spots (2–40%). In different settlements the Caspian gull egg sizes vary in length and diameter of 54.5–86.3 x 39.2–60.4 mm, volume 61.7–113.7 cm3 and index of roundness 63.6–85.3%. The study revealed that the linear dimensions of eggs also depend on the number of birds in the nesting colonies. We found that morphological and dimensional characteristics of Caspian gull eggs can vary at certain intervals and characterize individual colonies, settlements and populations. Based on cluster analysis, conducted in terms of the average of the linear sizes of eggs of Caspian gull from several populations within the range of the species, the study identified three groups of colonies – Danube-Sivash, Azov-Black Sea and Caucasus-Caspian. In region of the Azov-Black Sea, the greatest similarity was shown between the settlements of Sivash and the South of Crimea, which in turn is similar to Lebiyazhyi Islands and Kaniv Nature Reserve (river Dnipro). A related link combined the Azov and Black Sea branches, while the Caucasus-Caspian group is relatively separate. As a result this study the influence of the number of nesting birds on the dimensional characteristics of the eggs was established; in the period of increase in the Caspian gull population from the 1970s to the early 1990s they had the highest scores, and in periods of decreasing population in 2001–2005, their values were lowest. Consequently, the use of oomorphological indicators turned out to be a fairly easy and objective method for studying the monitoring data for separate colonial bird species.

Purpose. The work is aimed at studying the features of currents on the Black Sea northwestern shelf based of the reanalysis results, and at analyzing the reasons of these features. Methods and Results. To analyze the currents on the northwestern shelf, applied were the results of physical reanalysis of the Black Sea fields performed by the authors earlier, namely, the arrays of hydrodynamic fields on a regular grid with the 21-year duration (1992–2012). Surface currents on the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea are directed mainly to the southwest. Throughout the whole year (except for the summer months when the wind effect weakens), an intensive compensatory current directed to the south is formed along the western coast. The waters near the western coast are highly horizontally stratified that is caused by fresh water inflowing with the river runoffs. In winter seasons, the stratification is most pronounced, whereas in summer, the horizontal density gradient decreases. The horizontal density stratification leads to the following: starting from the depth ~ 20 m, the pressure gradient changes its sign and the along-coastal jet countercurrent directed to the north, occurs. Conclusions. The performed studies have shown that the water circulation on the Black Sea northwestern shelf is determined mainly by the following factors: the wind-induced water flows across the shelf boundary and strong horizontal water stratification near the western coast resulted from the river runoffs. As the currents on the sea surface are directed mainly to the southwest, the compensatory current directed to the south is formed near the western coast. Due to the strong horizontal stratification resulted from the river runoffs, a countercurrent directed to the north is formed in the subsurface layer near the western coast. In case the seawater flows to the shelf are extremely high, the countercurrent may be absent.

AbstractThis paper analyses extreme precipitation characteristics of Turkey based on selected WMO climate change indices. The indices – monthly total rainy days (RDays); monthly maximum 1-day precipitation (Rx1day); simple precipitation intensity index (SDII); and monthly count of days when total precipitation (represented by PRCP) exceeds 10 mm (R10mm) – were calculated for 98 stations for the 38-year overlapping period (1975–2012). Cluster analysis was applied to evaluate the spatial characterisation of the annual precipitation extremes. Four extreme precipitation clusters were detected. Cluster 1 corresponds spatially to Central and Eastern Anatolia and is identified with the lowest values of the indices, except rainy days. Cluster 2 is concentrated mainly on the west and south of Anatolia, and especially the coastal zone, and can be characterised with the lowest rainy days, and high and moderate values of other indices. These two clusters are the most prominent classes throughout the country, and include a total of 82 stations. Cluster 3 is clearly located in the Black Sea coastal zone in the north, and has high and moderate index values. Two stations on the north-east coast of the Black Sea region are identified as Cluster 4, which exhibits the highest values among all indices. The overall results reveal that winter months and October have the highest proportion of precipitation extremes in Turkey. The north-east part of the Black Sea region and Mediterranean coastal area from the south-west to the south-east are prone to frequent extreme precipitation events.

Many years’ studies of process of changes in composition, properties and fertility of the black soils of the North-Western Black Sea area in Ukraine with irrigation have revealed mobility of carbonates and humus in them, decrease of capacity of cationic consumption and content of consumed calcium, increase of share of consumed magnesium and sodium. Indicators of agro-physical state of soils under irrigation conditions are worsening significantly.

The territory of Ukraine is located between the areas of two subspecies of Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon (Temminck, 1823) - A. m. melanopogon (Temminck, 1823) and A. m. albiventris (Kazakov, 1974). In the North-West Black Sea region, the nesting of the nominative subspecies has been proven, while the second one nests in the East Azov Sea region. By 2016, neither in the North Azov Sea region, nor in the South-East of Ukraine, this species was not observed. However, there are certain meetings of solitary birds in the adjacent regions during migrations on the Eastern Syvash on 21.10.2006 and westwards of the Don mouth on the Mius River bank on 05.09.2011. It was photographed for the first time on 24.04.2016 on the Shaitanka River near the Novodonetske village Velykonovosilkivskyi district of Donetsk region. Its nesting is reliably proven on 30.04.2020 on the Mokri Yaly River of the same region. On this river, there are plant communities with different proportions of common reed (Phragmites australis) and narrowleaf cattali (Typha angustifolia) grow in some places around open areas of the water area. It's on such sections of the river the Moustached Warbler males were observed. On a 600 m long section of the river, 3-4 males were observed. 2 males were caught, which were assigned to the subspecies of A. m. albiventris by color and measurements. On 19.05.2020 there were 5 eggs in one of the found nests. Egg sizes, mm: 18.0x13.0; 18.0x12.9; 16.9x12.9; 17.6x12.9; 17.9x12.9. The nest was located at a height of 250 mm above the water. Nest measurements, mm: D=85; d=50; H=53; h=43. It is suggested that in the South-East of Ukraine, birds appeared on nesting grounds due to the increase in the range of the subspecies in the north-west direction over the last 20 years due to climate warming. It is quite likely to find new localities of the Moustached Warblers on small rivers, large ponds or reservoirs in the southern part of Donetsk, eastern part of Zaporizhzhia or south – eastern part of Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Palaeogeographic maps of the lacustrine Miocene and Pliocene have been constructed according to all the known geological data. The Lakes of the Balkan Land, depending on the tectonics, migrated due to causes from the deep subsurface. There are several phases of the Miocene lakes: the lowermost Miocene transiting from marine Oligocene, Lower, Middle, Upper Miocene covering, in patches, the main part of the Land. The Pliocene lakes spread mostly to the north of the Balkan Land and covered only its marginal parts. Other lake-like sediments, in fact freshened parts of the Black Sea Kuialnician (Upper Pliocene), stretched along the middle and southern portions of the Balkan Peninsula (to the south of the Balkan Mt.). Subsequently, the Balkan Peninsula was formed.

The publication focuses on the study of ecological conditions of bird habitats in the steppe zone of Ukraine. The material is based on the original observations in the north-western part of the Azov Sea region over the period 2009-2018 and on the data from relevant literature sources. The impact of changes in ecological conditions of bird habitats was considered and analyzed. The objectives were to show stages of changes in ecological conditions of the Ukrainian steppe and to carry out a comparative analysis of original ornithological data with the data of other authors.
