A novel and robust field oriented vector control method for standalone induction generators (IG) is presented. The proposed controller exploits the concept of direct field orientation and provides asymptotic rotor flux modulus and DC-link voltage regulations when a DC-load is constant or slowly varying. Flux subsystem, designed using Lyapunov’s second method, has, in contrast to standard structures, closed loop properties and therefore is robust with respect to rotor resistance variations. A decomposition approach on the base of the two-time scale separation of the voltage and torque current dynamics is used for design of the voltage subsystem. The feedback linearizing voltage controller is designed using a steady state IG power balance equation. The resulting quasi-linear dynamics of the voltage control loop allows use of simple controllers tuning procedure and provides an improved dynamic performance for variable speed and flux operation. Results of a comparative experimental study with standard indirect field oriented control are presented. In contrast to existing solutions, the designed controller provides system performances stabilization when speed and flux are varying. It is experimentally shown that a robust field oriented controller ensures robust flux regulation and robust stabilization of the torque current dynamics leading to improved energy efficiency of the electromechanical conversion process. A synergetic sliding mode (SSM) approach is designed to address the drawbacks of the direct field-oriented control (DFOC) of the induction generators (IGs) integrated into variable speed dual-rotor wind power (DRWP) systems with the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. Using SSM controllers in the DFOC strategy, the active power, electromagnetic torque, and reactive power ripples are reduced compared to traditional DFOC using proportional-integral (PI) controllers. This proposed strategy, associated with SSM controllers, produces efficient state estimation. The effectiveness of the designed DFOC strategy has been evaluated on variable speed DRWP systems with the MPPT technique.

Currently, high-performance power conversion requirements are of increasing interest in microgrid applications. In fact, isolated bidirectional dc-dc converters are widely used in modern dc distribution systems. The dual active bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter is identified as one of the most promising converter topology for the mentioned applications, due to its benefits of high power density, electrical isolation, bidirectional power flow, zero-voltage switching, and symmetrical structure. This study presents a power management control scheme in order to ensure the power balance of a dc microgrid in stand-alone operation, where the renewable energy source (RES) and the battery energy storage (BES) unit are interfaced by DAB converters. The power management algorithm, as introduced in this work, selects the proper operation of the RES system and BES system, based on load/generation power and state-of-charge of the battery conditions. Moreover, a nonlinear robust control strategy is proposed when the DAB converters are in voltage-mode-control in order to enhance the dynamic performance and robustness of the common dc-bus voltage, in addition to overcoming the instability problems that are caused by constant power loads and the dynamic interactions of power electronic converters. The simulation platform is developed in MATLAB/Simulink, where a photovoltaic system and battery system are selected as the typical RES and BES, respectively. Assessments on the performance of the proposed control scheme are conducted. Comparisons with the other control method are also provided.

To solve the problem of detecting the permeability of the textile machinery, a dedicated test system has been developed based on the pressure difference measuring method. The established system has a number of advantages including simple, fast and accurate. The mathematical model of influencing factors for permeability is derived based on fluid theory, and the relationship of these parameters is achieved. Further investigations are directed towards the inherent characteristics of the control system. Based on the established model and measuring features, an information fusion based clustering control system is proposed to implement the measurement. Using this mechanical structure, a PID control system and a cluster control system have been developed. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to examine the performance of the established system. It is noted that the clustering method has a high dynamic performance and control accuracy. This cluster fusion control method has been successfully utilized in powder metallurgy collar permeability testing.

In order to improve the performance of a new type of full hybrid electric bus, this paper puts forward a set of coordinated control method to adjust the operation of the engine and two motors. In the engine start-stop logic control, comprehensive consideration of SOC, the speed of the bus and the accelerator pedal stroke are performed, while hysteresis control is introduced to improve the stability of the control; In the engine working point adjusting control, not only the engine speed command rate of change was optimized, but also the output torque rate was optimized to match the air injection and exhaust, etc. Further, the method based on dynamic constraints was used to optimize the working point adjustment process. At present, there are hundreds of busses operates in route. Results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the control method. The vehicle has good fuel economy, and the dynamic performance and driving comfort are also greatly improved.

Optimization techniques are increasingly used in research to improve the control of three-phase induction motor (TIM). Indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) scheme is employed to improve the efficiency and enhance the performance of variable speed control of TIM drives. The space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is used for switching signals in a three-phase bridge inverter to minimize harmonics in the output signals of the inverter. In this paper, a novel scheme based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to improve the variable speed control of IFOC in TIM. The PSO algorithm is used to search the best values of parameters of proportional-integral (PI) controller (proportional gain (kp) and integral gain (ki)) for each speed controller and voltage controller to improve the speed response for TIM. An optimal PI controller-based objective function is also used to tune and minimize the mean square error (MSE). Results of all tests verified the robustness of the PSO-PI controller for speed response in terms of damping capability, fast settling time, steady state error, and transient responses under different conditions of mechanical load and speed.

As a kind of special motors, linear induction motors (LIM) have been an important research field for researchers. However, it gives a great velocity control challenge due to the complex nonlinearity, high coupling, and unique end effects. In this article, an improved model-free adaptive sliding-mode-constrained control method is proposed to deal with this problem dispensing with internal parameters of the LIM. Firstly, an improved compact form dynamic linearization (CFDL) technique is used to simplify the LIM plant. Besides, an antiwindup compensator is applied to handle the problem of the actuator under saturations in case during the controller design. Furthermore, the stability of the closed system is proved by Lyapunov stability method theoretically. Finally, simulation results are given to demonstrate that the proposed controller has excellent dynamic performance and stronger robustness compared with traditional PID controller.

Traffic congestion is a common problem in merging regions of freeway networks. An adaptive integrated control method involving variable speed limits and ramp metering is presented with the aim of easing traffic congestion at merging regions. The problem of the imbalanced rights of ways of the upstream mainline and on-ramp at the merging region is solved by constructing the evaluation indices of congestion degree. Specifically, the traffic density and queue length of the upstream mainline and on-ramp are selected for use in the evaluation indices. Then, an adaptive controller is designed, integrating variable speed limits and ramp metering. The proposed method is tested in simulations considering a real freeway network in China calibrated by real traffic variables. The results show that the proposed adaptive integrated control method can prevent traffic flow breakdown and maintain a high outflow at the merging region during peak periods. The adaptive integrated control may lead to a 17% improvement in traffic delay.

PurposeIn the need to optimize the energy efficiency, control structures can have a positive effect by tracking the optimal operating point according to the speed and mechanical load of the motor. The purpose of this paper is to present an energy-efficient scalar control for squirrel-cage induction motors (IMs), taking into consideration the effect of core losses. Design/methodology/approachThe proposed technique is based on the modification of the stator flux reference, to track the best efficiency point. The optimal flux values are computed through an improved model of the IM including core losses, then stored in a look-up table. FindingsSimulations of the proposed scalar control are carried out, and results show the efficiency improvement when the flux is optimized especially at low load cases. Results were validated experimentally on two motors compliant with different efficiency standards. Practical implicationsThe proposed approach can be used in several fields and applications using the scalar-controlled IM with a proper implementation in variable speed drives, as in the cases of pumps, compressors and blowers. Originality/valueThe proposed technique is compared to existing optimization methods in literature, and the results show an improvement in the dynamic performance and in the response delays. The approach is also compared to an optimization technique used in industries like Leroy-Somer for variable speed drives, and efficiency improvements are shown.
