One new flavonol diglycoside, 4′,5-dihydroxy-3,3′,7-trimethoxyflavone 4′- O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), and two known compounds (2–3) were isolated from the methanol extract of Anoectochilus annamensis Aver. aerial parts. The effects were evaluated of all isolated compounds (1–3) on LPS-induced production of the inflammatory mediator nitric oxide (NO) by RAW264.7 cells. 4′,5-Dihydroxy-3,3′,7-trimethoxyflavone (2) was the most active while the addition of a rutinoside at C-4′ (compound 1) decreased the inhibitory activity. This is the first report on the chemical composition and biological activity of A annamensis.

The high vitamin A activity of the petroleum ether extract of the annatto seed has been confirmed. It ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 international units of vitamin A per gram of extract. It was found that a standard mixture of 3-percent acetone in petroleum ether did not remove any vitamin A-active material from a magnesium oxide-hyflo supercel column, on which a petroleum ether extract of annatto had been chromatographed. The only solvent among those tried, that effectively removed the material which was left absorbed on the column after elution with acetone-petroleum ether was methanol. The methanol extract exhibited a biological activity of about the same order of magnitude as the original petroleum ether extract, that is, 1,000 to 2,000 international units of vitamin A.

Quassinoids have been reported to possess numerous biological activities such as anticancer, antimalarial and phytotoxicity. They are degraded triterpenoids which give bitterness characteristic of Simaroubaceae and classified according to their basic skeletons; C18, C19, C20, C22, C25 which correspond to their particular genus Quassia, Brucea, Soulamea, Eurycoma, Picrolemnia and others. Quassia borneensis Noot. (Simaroubaceae) (Qb) have not been properly placed in Quassia s.l. thus created confusion. Therefore, a study on Qb for its chemical compounds and biological activity are appropriate for data gathering. There is positive possibility for new quassinoids with potent biological activity to be discovered, in addition to confirmation of placement in Simaroubaceae. The study was accomplished by extracting the secondary metabolites from Qb by soxhlet in methanol. The methanol extract was partitioned to acquire n-hexane, chloroform and aqueous extracts. These extracts underwent isolation and purification through chromatographic techniques before subjected to spectroscopic instruments for structural elucidation. Preliminary findings identified five quassinoids and one canthin-6-one as glaucarubolone (1), chaparrinone (2), holacanthone (3), glaucarubinone (4), ailanthinone (5) and canthin-6-one (6) in reference to past reports. The isolation confirms Qb placement in Simaroubaceae, however, not in Quassia section as indicated by isolated quassinoids. Hence, further study would confirm its proper section in Quassia.

Sonneratia, a genus of mangroves from family Lythraceae, is reported for number of high biological activity including antimicrobial. Sonneratia ovata Backer is one of the species which traditionally used by Indonesian people for the treatment of some diseases. In this research, the investigation about biological activity of S. ovata Backer as anti-microbial has been performed. The methanol extract of S. ovata Backer is highly potential as antimicrobial against gram positive bacteria, S. aureus, with IC50 value of 7.7 μg/ml which is higher than of Ampicillin as positive control with IC50 value of 37.8 μg/ml. Furthermore, stigmasterol one of the major compound of S. ovata Backer has been isolated from the methanol extract of the stem bark of S. ovata Backer. Therefore, S. ovata Backer is proven to have high activity as antimicrobial, and highly potential to be a new source of antimicrobial agent.
