University of Otago, Donghua University This article is an attempt to analyze the dramatic structure of the Mudan ting 牡丹 亭 (Peony Pavilion) as a piece of fantasy which Tang Xianzu 湯顯祖 (1550–1616) created through the utilisation of structural devices and techniques of magic tales. The particular model adopted for the textual analysis is that formulated by Vladimir Propp in Morphology of Russian Folktale. This paper starts with a comparison of Russian magic tales Propp investigated for his morphological study and Chinese zhiguai 志怪 tales which provide the prototype for the Mudan ting with a view of justifying the application of the Proppian model. The second part of this paper is devoted to a critical review of the Proppian model and method in terms of function versus non-function, tale versus move, and character versus tale / theatrical role. Further information is also given in this part as a response to challenges and criticisms this article may incur as regards the applicability of the Proppian model in inter-cultural and inter-generic studies.Part Three is a morphological analysis of the dramatic text with a focus on the main storyline revolving around the hero and heroine. In the course of textual analysis, the particular form and sequence of functions is identified, the functional scheme of each move presented, and the distribution of dramatis personae in accordance with the sphere(s) of action of characters delineated. Finally this paper concludes with a presentation of the overall dramatic structure and strategy of this play.

The emergence of neologisms has always been an interesting phenomenon as it demonstrates the dynamism of language. This study intends to determine the neologisms during COVID-19 Pandemic through a morphological analysis. This study argues that the neologisms that emerge during the COVID-19 pandemic reveal the morphological processes that formed the new words. It further claims that the morphemic structures of the neologisms follow the general structures of English vocabulary. This study utilizes the descriptive-qualitative design in analyzing the morphological structures of the neologisms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, this study involves textual analysis to determine the morphological processes that encompass the formation of new words. The data used in analyzing the morphological structures of COVID-19-related neologisms are five (5) Internet articles that introduce the new terms created because of the corona virus outbreak. These articles were published in the months of March, April and May 2020.Findings reveal that most of the neologisms are nouns. The common morphological process involved in the formation of new words are compounding, blending and affixation. Moreover, majority of the neologisms follow the compound structure of the free and bound morphemes. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the neologisms formed during the COVID-19 pandemic reveal the morphological processes and the morphemic structures of the neologisms follow the general structures of English vocabulary specifically on the combination of free and bound morphemes.

Abstract This article explores dimensions of dramatic structure which the literary linguistic analysis of a play text can illuminate within an integrated model of dramatic significance. The play to be examined is John Millington Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World, known for its lexical richness, denseness of dramatic expression and not least the structural creativity of its Hiberno-English, all of which provide an abundant fund of textual semiotics for the present drama-specific literary linguistic analysis. The dimensions of the play investigated are (i) those of its ‘constitution’, which linguistically comprises dialogue and stage directions, and characterisation, plot and setting as traditional constituents of dramatic structure in their own right; and (ii) those of its ‘realisation’ as literary work, staging production and theatre performance and the associated addressivity of materially the same play text at each of these levels. As such, it will be shown that the employment of, and further development of, a linguistic model of social semiotics (after Halliday 1978; Fairclough 2003) enables a unified account to be given of the dramatic meanings a play text expresses at these two levels of its internal construction and its external actualisation.

Kata kunci: Barata yuda, Klaten, Vladimir ProppABSTRACTLakon Baratayuda versi Klaten: Study of Narative Structure. This paper is intended to find the flow of the action hero in the Lakon Baratayuda Klaten version. The theory of the structure of folk tales Vladimir Propp adapted and modified in this paper. Propp’s theory says that a folk tale has a structure formed of functions that move sequentially. With regard to the theory, the method of analysis used is the method of Propp’s structural models. To be able to find the flow of the action hero first revealed what functions (action dramatic personae) are present, then determine the sequence of functions (action dramatic personae), and further reveals the narrative structure of the Lakon Baratayuda Klaten version. There are several things that can be raised from the analysis of Lakon Baratayuda Klaten version. The first, discovered fourteen function (action hero) is tracked from the stream acts as a hero in the Lakon Baratayuda Klaten version. Second, the Lakon Baratayuda Klaten version contains more than one main story movement. Keywords: Baratayuda, structural, Propp

Abstract Morphological adornment of text in Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) XML can be useful for studies in textual analysis. MorphAdorner is a principal tool for providing such functionality in English texts. However, its practical use is limited when the input XML contains branching text, e.g. when <choice> appears, as it modifies the input document. In such cases, preprocessing is required to obtain the desired results. This article introduces a new tool Hoshi with the purpose of determining how this issue can be best handled with minimal input modification and preprocessing needed. It also investigates whether parsing software available online can be used to supply morphological information that can be encoded in an output format like MorphAdorner, and whether such a tool can be developed to adorn text in other languages. Challenges include those posed by the target language, the current software available for providing morphological analysis in it, and the schema needed for encoding the results. Moreover, technical hurdles presented by segmented and branching text can complicate the alignment process, especially when the intent is to guarantee input document integrity. Our approach for handling these is presented, and the article ends by outlining future applications of Hoshi that can help to enhance TEI scholarship that prioritizes the use of morphological word metadata.

This article examines how conventional studio production strategies were active in the construction of political meaning in the 1974 television play ‘Absolute Beginners’, written by Trevor Griffiths. Produced for the BBC anthology series Fall of Eagles, the play dramatises Lenin's involvement with the Russian Social Democratic Workers Party (RSDWP) and explores the contradictions between personal ethics and political necessity. Through close textual analysis and contextual discussion of other plays in the series, this piece demonstrates how shot patterns and spatial and performative devices in ‘Absolute Beginners’ supported the drama's socialist-humanist and feminist themes. Drawing on existing writing about the studio mode, it argues that the qualities of intimacy and presentational distance that it engendered were highly appropriate for the personal and the political dialectic in ‘Absolute Beginners’. While using authorship as a convenient category for referring to the coherence of Griffiths' thematic concerns and dramatic structure during this period, the article complicates notions of the television dramatist as author by arguing for the importance of visual style and showing how ‘ordinary’ studio form was operational in the play's political meanings.
