In this study, we investigated the expression of the pattern concept in primary education. For this purpose, we chose the concept of rhythm as a means of repeating found in different contexts. In Music and Arts, rhythm is first a way to make compositions. In the case of learning Math, rhythm can aid in comprehending various structures. We used action research in this article – our study contained some trials of learning to understand composition and structures by completing some origami applique tasks; pupils from the 2nd grade were our study participants. The study was held during the following 3 stages: the investigation of simple repeating, the exploration of rhythmical directional changes, and the examination of rhythmical size changes. Fourteen participants took part in the study. The pupils were asked to make some compositions of origami applique based on certain rules set for them. The participants had to also use their experience acquired in the aforementioned tasks for further tasks, which required them to create their own patterns. They had to realize the basic underlying structures for completing such tasks.The data were gathered by collecting paper crafts made by students and by audiotaping the discussions with these children. After employing content analysis, for the sake of visual illustrations of the results, the main features of various task performance were depicted using some typical real examples from the paper crafts of the students.The results showed that 2nd graders were able to replicate a simple rhythm without making mistakes. When creating line-type ornaments, they concentrated on one possible feature to make the rhythm, often mostly ignoring such possibilities as repetitions in number, direction, and size. After gaining some new knowledge during the process of origami applique activities designed to teach the possibilities in changing direction and size, the pupils were eager to apply various structures elsewhere. The children were fast to realize the importance of tidy composition, to solve the arising difficulties, and to generalize the experience in some other contexts.

Social Aspects of Education for Sustainable Development in Primary School in EstoniaThe purpose of the article is to analyse the circumstances of applying of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Estonian educational actuality. Empirical part of the study comprehends a comparative content analysis of UNECE strategy of ESD and the chapters of the text of the Estonian National Curriculum valid from 2002. The discussion concentrates on the social aspects of ESD because their significance was pointed out by the experts of ESD. The topic of the article is confined to the issues concerning the primary education, i.e. the grades from 1st to 3rd. Conclusions are made about the opportunities to apply ESD more effectively than at present. Statements of experts on textbooks and curriculum have been taken into account as additional sources besides the documentary analysis.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA) siswa dengan penerapan model pembelajaran picture and picture di kelas III Sekolah Dasar Negeri 004 Cendirejo Kecamatan Pasir Penyu. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas (Classroom Action Research) yang mencakup kegiatan perencanaan (planning), tindakan (action), observasi (observation), refleksi (reflection) atau evaluasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, dilihat dari skor dasar siswa yang tuntas sebesar 13 orang dengan persentase 46%. Setelah dilakukan perbaikan pada siklus I, hasil belajar siswa meningkat, hal ini dibuktikan dengan siswa yang tuntas sebesar 20 orang atau 71%. Sedangkan pada siklus II, hasil belajar siswa kembali meningkat menjadi 28 orang siswa yang tuntas dengan persentase 100%. Dari analisis hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa dengan menerapkan model pemebelajaran Picture and Picture dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar IPA siswa kelas II SDN 004 Cendirejo Kecamatan Pasir Penyu Kabupaten Indragiri Hulu.Kata kunci: model picture and picture, hasil belajar IPA. ABSTRACTThis study aims to improve student learning outcomes with the application of a picture and picture learning model in class III 004 Cendirejo Public Primary School Pasir Penyu District. This research is a classroom action research that includes planning, action, observation, reflection or evaluation activities. The results showed, seen from the basic score of students who completed at 13 people with a percentage of 46%. After making improvements in the first cycle, student learning outcomes increase, this is evidenced by students who complete by 20 people or 71%. While in the second cycle, student learning outcomes again increased to 28 students who completed a percentage of 100%. From the analysis of the results of this study it can be concluded that by applying the Picture and Picture learning model can improve the learning outcomes of Natural Sciences class II 004 Public Primary School Cendirejo Pasir Penyu District Indragiri Hulu.Keywords: model picture and picture, learning outcomes of Natural Sciences.

The main aim of this study is to check whether there are differences in some variables related to attitudes towards math in primary school students according to the course and gender. The sample consists of 897 students of the fifth and sixth year of primary education (50.2% boys and 49.8% girls). The results indicate that the boys, compared to girls, have a higher perceived competence in math, they are more intrinsically motivated extrinsic and exhibit lower levels of anxiety. As for the differences in terms of this variable, the results indicate that students in grade 5 have a higher perceived competence for math, perceive most useful, are more intrinsically motivated to this subject and show anxiety levels and some negative feelings toward the lower than grade 6. Therefore, girls show a "profile" of less adaptive than men conditions, both in terms of their perceived competition as their motivation towards math and also in terms of the emotions associated with this matter. As for the differences depending on the course, students from grade 5 are those with a much more positive attitudinal and motivational conditions than grade 6.

Abstract This article illustrates the importance of teaching Roman numerals, a component of a Latin language programme, as part of a Maths curriculum in a Spanish primary school. The aim is to contextualise the topic with concrete examples, supported by ancient Roman objects such as the milestone. The author discusses the relevance of a more integrated cross-curricular lesson to teach Roman numerals so that students better understand their use and make comparisons between ancient Roman and more modern traditions and culture, and to understand Roman influences on the modern age. Lastly, the author describes a teaching experiment in a Spanish primary school using some ad hoc materials to fulfil the aim of the study. The study outlines the positive results of integrating Roman numerals within the Maths lesson and shows that the students gained a richer and more valuable learning experience as they made reference to the concrete objects.

The Study Orientation Questionnaire in Mathematics (Primary) is being developed as a diagnostic measure for South African teachers and counsellors to help primary school students improve their orientation towards the study of mathematics. In this study, participants were primary school students in the North-West Province of South Africa. During the standardisation in 2007, 1,013 students (538 boys: M age = 12.61; SD =1.53; 555 girls: M age= 11.98; SD =1.35; 10 missing values) were assessed. Factor analysis yielded three factors. Analysis also showed satisfactory reliability coefficients and item-factor correlations. Step-wise linear regression indicated that three factors (Mathematics anxiety, Study attitude in mathematics, and Study habits in mathematics) contributed significantly ( R2 = .194) to predicting achievement in mathematics as measured by the Basic Mathematics Questionnaire (Primary).

We examine the impact of the Kenyan Free Primary Education program on student participation, sorting, and achievement on the primary school exit examination. Exploiting variation in pre-program dropout rates between districts, we find that the program increased the number of students who completed primary school, spurred private school entry, and increased access for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We argue that the program was welfare enhancing as it promoted educational access without substantially reducing the test scores of students who would have been in school in the absence of the program. Abstract Background The engagement of schools in malaria control is an emerging strategy. Little is known about the involvement of students in the development of malaria messages. This study evaluated the message content of primary school students’ malaria poems. Methods A qualitative content analysis was conducted to explore malaria messages conveyed in poems produced by students. Twenty poems were purposively selected from twenty schools across rural villages in five districts of the Jimma Zone. Data were analyzed using Atlas.ti version 7.1.4 software. The message contents were quantified in terms of frequency, and including metaphors, presented using central themes, categories, and supportive quotations. Results A total of 602 malarial contents were generated, and organized into 21 categories under five central themes. 1) Malaria-related knowledge (causation and modes of transmission, mosquito breeding and biting behavior, signs and symptoms, care for insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), and prevention methods), 2) Perceived threats from malaria, 3)The effectiveness of prevention methods (i.e., related to the adaption of ITNs, environmental cleaning, indoor residual spray (IRS), treatment for fever, and drug adherence practices), 4) Misconceptions, beliefs, and malpractices regarding the cause of malaria and drug use) and 5) Direct calls to the adopt ITN, IRS, clean surroundings, treatment, and drug use. The most commonly conveyed message contents were about the severity of malaria, distinguishable signs and symptoms, calls for community participation for malaria elimination, knowledge of preventive methods, and effectiveness of ITN use. Metaphoric expressions (war and death) were used to convey messages about the severity and the need to manage the prognosis of malaria through the active ITN use, which itself was metaphorically represented as ‘a trap’ to mosquitoes. Conclusions The poetic analysis indicated that the students developed and disseminated rich malarial messages, especially on malarial knowledge, and perceptions, beliefs, norms and practices of the local community to prevent and control malaria. Therefore, primary school students can be a source of information and would effectively communicate knowledge, perceptions, and promote malaria related practices, particularly in rural settings.

Good examples are given for the novice of action oriented research. The author presents the information in an orderly fashion. In this review, I will give my initial appraisal and content analysis regarding the intended audience, objectivity of the author and the writing style presented.
