Abstract. This study presents an analysis of both MOZAIC profiles above Frankfurt and Lagrangian dispersion model simulations for the 2003 European heat wave. The comparison of MOZAIC measurements in summer 2003 with the 11-year MOZAIC climatology reflects strong temperature anomalies (exceeding 4°C) throughout the lower troposphere. Higher positive anomalies of temperature and negative anomalies of both wind speed and relative humidity are found for the period defined here as the heat wave (2–14 August 2003), compared to the periods before (16–31 July 2003) and after (16–31 August 2003) the heat wave. In addition, Lagrangian model simulations in backward mode indicate the suppressed long-range transport in the mid- to lower troposphere and the enhanced southern origin of air masses for all tropospheric levels during the heat wave. Ozone and carbon monoxide also present strong anomalies (both ~ +40 ppbv) during the heat wave, with a maximum vertical extension reaching 6 km altitude around 11 August 2003. Pollution in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) is enhanced during the day, with ozone mixing ratios two times higher than climatological values. This is due to a combination of factors, such as high temperature and radiation, stagnation of air masses and weak dry deposition, which favour the accumulation of ozone precursors and the build-up of ozone. A negligible role of a stratospheric-origin ozone tracer has been found for the lower troposphere in this study. From 29 July to 15 August 2003 forest fires burned around 0.3×106 ha) in Portugal and added to atmospheric pollution in Europe. Layers with enhanced CO and NOy mixing ratios, probably advected from Portugal, were crossed by the MOZAIC aircraft in the free troposphere over Frankfurt. A series of forward and backward Lagrangian model simulations have been performed to investigate the origin of these anomalies. During the whole heat wave, European anthropogenic emissions present the strongest contribution to the measured CO levels in the lower troposphere (near 30%). This source is followed by Portuguese forest fires which affect the lower troposphere after 6 August 2003 and even the PBL around 10 August 2003. The averaged biomass burning contribution reaches 35% during the affected period. Anthropogenic CO of North American origin only marginally influences CO levels over Europe during that period.

<p>Climate change threatens to exacerbate existing problems in urban areas arising from the urban heat island. Furthermore, expansion of urban areas and rising urban populations will increase the numbers of people exposed to hazards in these vulnerable areas. We therefore urgently need study of these environments and in-depth assessment of potential climate adaptation measures.</p><p>We present a study of heat wave impacts across the urban landscape of Vienna for different future development pathways and for both present and future climatic conditions. We have created two different urban development scenarios that estimate potential urban sprawl and optimized development concerning future building construction in Vienna and have built a digital representation of each within the Town Energy Balance (TEB) urban surface model. In addition, we select two heat waves of similar frequency of return representative for present and future conditions (following the RCP8.5 scenario) of the mid 21<sup>st</sup> century and use the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) to simulate both heat wave events. We then couple the two representations urban Vienna in TEB with the WRF heat wave simulations to estimate air temperature, surface temperatures and human thermal comfort during the heat waves. We then identify and apply a set of adaptation measures within TEB to try to identify potential solutions to the problems associated with the urban heat island.</p><p>Global and regional climate change under the RCP8.5 scenario causes the future heat wave to be more severe showing an increase of daily maximum air temperature in Vienna by 7 K; the daily minimum air temperature will increase by 2-4 K. We find that changes caused by urban growth or densification mainly affect air temperature and human thermal comfort local to where new urbanisation takes place and does not occur significantly in the existing central districts.</p><p>Exploring adaptation solutions, we find that a combination of near zero-energy standards and increasing albedo of building materials on the city scale accomplishes a maximum reduction of urban canyon temperature of 0.9 K for the minima and 0.2 K for the maxima. Local scale changes of different adaption measures show that insulation of buildings alone increases the maximum wall surface temperatures by more than 10 K or the maximum mean radiant temperature (MRT) in the canyon by 5 K.  Therefore, additional adaptation to reduce MRT within the urban canyons like tree shade are needed to complement the proposed measures.</p><p>This study concludes that the rising air temperatures expected by climate change puts an unprecedented heat burden on Viennese inhabitants, which cannot easily be reduced by measures concerning buildings within the city itself. Additionally, measures such as planting trees to provide shade, regional water sensitive planning and global reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in order to reduce temperature extremes are required.</p><p>We are now actively seeking to apply this set of tools to a wider set of cases in order to try to find effective solutions to projected warming resulting from climate change in urban areas.</p>

Abstract Atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles are important for weather prediction, but climate change has increased the interest in upper-air observations asking for very high-quality reference measurements. This paper discusses an experimental approach to determine the radiation-induced error on radiosonde air temperature measurements. On the one hand, solar shortwave and thermal longwave radiation profiles were accurately measured during radiosonde ascents from the surface to 35-km altitude. On the other hand, air temperature was measured with several thermocouples on the same flight, simultaneously under sun-shaded and unshaded conditions. The radiation experiments reveal that thermal radiation errors on the very thin thermocouple of the Meteolabor SRS-C34 radiosonde are similar during night- and daytime. They produce a radiative cooling in the lower troposphere and the upper stratosphere, but a radiative heating in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Air temperature experiments with several thermocouples, however, show that solar radiation produces a radiative heating of about +0.2°C near the surface, which linearly increases to about +1°C at 32 km (~10 hPa). The new solar radiation error profile was then applied to SRS-C34 measurements made during the Eighth WMO Intercomparison of High Quality Radiosonde Systems, held in Yangjiang, China, in July 2010. The effects of thermal and solar radiation errors are finally shown in contrast to the 10 other internationally used radiosonde systems, which were flown during this international campaign.

Abstract The circulation associated with extreme heat (EH) typically shows an anomalous anticyclone that enhances temperature through adiabatic heating, but this study indicates obvious spatial variation in eastern China. The EH-related circulation pattern in eastern China can be classified into three categories: typical extratropical pattern, monsoonal pattern, and foehn pattern. EH over northeastern China and eastern north China is characterized by a typical pattern involving an anomalous anticyclone and subsidence, and the air temperature increases throughout almost the entire troposphere. In contrast, EH over the Yangtze River valley and south China is associated with the monsoonal pattern. Over these regions, the air temperature only increases in the lower troposphere as a result of anomalous subsidence and lower humidity that has resulted from a farther north transportation of water vapor by a stronger monsoonal southwesterly. Meanwhile, the air temperature decreases in the upper troposphere because of the decrease of latent heat caused by suppressed precipitation. On the other hand, western north China, with most of its stations located on the eastern leeside of mountains, is obviously influenced by the foehn effect on EH days. The foehn-related northwesterly anomalies bring drier and warmer air from the mountains to sink on the leeside and greatly increase the air temperature in the lower troposphere, particularly near the surface. Therefore, the impacts of monsoon and topography should be taken into consideration when EH-related circulations are discussed over the many regions of eastern China. As a result, the reliable projection of air temperature in these regions under global warming is a challenging problem.

The study has focused on the evaluation of model performance on simulated air temperature at surface and mid atmospheric level over the Indian subcontinent using a Regional Climate Model version 3 (RegCM3). The model is used at 40 km horizontal resolution over the domain approximately 58° E-102.5° E & 5° N-40° N for the period of 1982-2006. The temperatures at lower troposphere (850 hPa) and mid tropospheric level (500 hPa) have been simulated with reanalysis dataset of the National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Various statistical measures namely Mean Bias Error (MBE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Percentage Error (MPE) and Correlation Coefficients (CCs) has been used to test the model results. It has been found that the RegCM3 is able to capture the main features of the observed mean surface climate and also patterns of surface and mid-level air temperatures over India. The model showed that cold biases were -4.29 °C (16.4%) at the lower troposphere, but insignificant at the mid atmospheric level in comparison to the NCEP dataset. The air temperature was well captured at mid tropospheric level. The CC between RegCM3 and NCEP is significantly high (0.82) over India in respect of annual surface air temperature (SAT). The trends of observed SAT were found to be significant increased by 0.32 °C with NCEP and 0.40 °C with RegCM3 over India. The annual SAT of cold biases ranging between -2 °C to -5 °C was found over major parts of India while cold biases of above -5 °C was found in the regions of low elevation or valley regions and below -2 °C in the mountainous regions. The analysis of annual and seasonal trends of maximum air temperature (Tmax), minimum air temperature (Tmin) and average air temperature (Tave) showed that the increasing trend was found over the Indo-Gangetic plain, Western Himalayas (WH) and North East India (NEI) in all seasons while decreasing trend over the North Central India (NCI) in the summer season and over the state of Gujarat in the monsoon season. The RegCM3 showed higher Water Vapour Mixing Ratio (WVMR) at the lower troposphere resulting more cooling at surface rather than at mid tropospheric level.

Múltiplas partes do globo, possivelmente, passarão a ter dias e noites mais quentes e, com a elevação das temperaturas globais, há tendências de acréscimo do risco de eventos atmosféricos extremos, tais como as ondas de calor. O objetivo principal desse estudo foi verificar as características gerais das ondas de calor nas três capitais da região Sul do Brasil (Curitiba, Florianópolis e Porto Alegre) e também em Montevidéu, capital do Uruguai. Esta análise baseou-se nos parâmetros: frequência, intensidade, duração e suas respectivas tendências. As ondas de calor foram identificadas em uma série de 30 anos de dados diários de temperatura média do ar. As análises de tendência foram averiguadas por meio do teste de Mann-Kendall a um nível de significância de α = 5%. Os resultados mostraram que todos os parâmetros nas quatro cidades apresentam tendências estatisticamente significativas e, com exceção da duração em Montevidéu, todas as demais são positivas. Para além do âmbito das tendências, analisando os parâmetros, comparativamente, conclui-se que Porto Alegre apresenta maior destaque nas médias. Além disto, afirma-se que o inverno é a estação com maior frequência de ondas de calor para todas as cidades.  A B S T R A C TMultiple parts of the globe are likely to have warmer days and nights, and with rising global temperatures, there is a tendency to increase the risk of extreme weather events, such as heat waves. The main objective of this study was to verify the general characteristics of heat waves in the three capitals of southern Brazil (Curitiba, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre) and also in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay. This analysis was based on the parameters: frequency, intensity, duration and their respective trends. Heat waves were identified in a series of 30 years of daily average air temperature data. Trend analyzes were performed using the Mann-Kendall test at a significance level of α = 5%. The results showed that all the parameters in the four cities present statistically significant trends and, except for the duration in Montevideo, all the others are positive. In addition to the scope of the trends, analyzing the parameters, comparatively, it is concluded that Porto Alegre presents greater prominence in the averages. <p>We investigate how European heat waves and their associated heat stress on humans have changed over the 20th century. We find that the heat stress has increased, even in regions where heat waves have not become warmer. As heat stress increases over wide areas of Europe there is also an increase in the total population affected by the heat stress. </p><p>Heat waves pose a serious health risk to humans by reducing our ability to shed heat. We have studied the occurrence and intensity of heat waves as well as a heat stress index based on simplified wet-bulb globe temperature using data from ERA-20C reanalysis 1900-2010. Over the 110 years of data we find an overall warming of the air temperatures and dew point. The 98th percentile of both air temperature has increased by more than 1.5°C over large areas of Europe. </p><p>We find an overall increase in heat wave days per year as well as an increase of air temperature during heat waves over most of Europe. As such, many densely populated areas exhibit increased heat stress during heat waves. For example, the mean heat stress during heat wave days over Paris has increased by one level, from “alert” in 1900-1930 to “caution” in 1980-2010. The fraction of the population exposed to heat waves has increased by 10%/century in central Europe and 25%/century over the Mediterranean. </p><p>We find more heat waves during 1920 - 1950, which may be related to the positive phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Variation (AMV). This suggests that the heat stress during European heat waves may also be influenced by internal climate variability, and large-ensemble model simulations may be used to disentangle the effects of natural variability and anthropogenic forcing.</p>

Abstract. Terpenoid emissions above urban areas are a complex mix of biogenic and anthropogenic emission sources. In line with previous studies we found that summertime terpenoid emissions in an alpine city were dominated by biogenic sources, but especially at lower temperatures the anthropogenic influences were non-negligible. Inter-seasonal emission measurements revealed consistency for monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, but a large difference in isoprene between the summers 2015 and 2018. Standardized emission potentials for monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were 0.12 nmol m-2 s-1 and 3.0·10-3 nmol m-2 s-1 in 2015 and 0.11 nmol m-2 s-1 and 3.4·10-3 nmol m-2 s-1 in 2018, respectively. Observed isoprene emissions were about four times higher in 2018 than in 2015. This factor decreased to 2.3 after standardizing isoprene emissions to 30 °C air temperature and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) of 1000 μmol m-2 s-1. Based on emission model parameterizations, increased leaf temperatures can explained ~50 % of these differences, but standard emission potentials remained higher in 2018, when a heat wave persisted. Potential other reasons for the differences such as emission parameterization, footprint changes, water stress conditions and tree trimming are investigated.
