This article chronicles an on-going effort of local community and cultural groups to preserve and interpret the abandoned historic buildings of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Advocates for the site, with help from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities (MARCH), are working with private developers to adapt and re-use the site. Outlining the complex process of persuading city of.cials and developers of the value of saving the plant and the interplay of local, state, regional, and national in.uences that shape the project, the author raises questions about the fragility of a public/private/nonpro.t alliance, suggests new strategies public historians might adopt for industrial sites, and comments on the danger that the expense of saving industrial sites poses to communities, even when history is a community priority. Documents and news coverage relating to the project can be read in full at www.march.rutgers.edu/bethsteel.htm.

AbstractTrans-4-hydroxy-l-proline is an important amino acid that is widely used in medicinal and industrial applications, particularly as a valuable chiral building block for the organic synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Traditionally, trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline is produced by the acidic hydrolysis of collagen, but this process has serious drawbacks, such as low productivity, a complex process and heavy environmental pollution. Presently, trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline is mainly produced via fermentative production by microorganisms. Some recently published advances in metabolic engineering have been used to effectively construct microbial cell factories that have improved the trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline biosynthetic pathway. To probe the potential of microorganisms for trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline production, new strategies and tools must be proposed. In this review, we provide a comprehensive understanding of trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline, including its biosynthetic pathway, proline hydroxylases and production by metabolic engineering, with a focus on improving its production.

The article presents results of a study of how immovable cultural heritage used for commercial purposes of tourism affects local communities. The study is based on data collected in direct interviews with property owners and representatives of local authorities and a questionnaire survey of local residents concerning sixteen historic buildings used as hotels, which are located in rural areas of Wielkopolskie province. It was found that the provision of additional, free cultural functions for local communities by property owners and/or local authorities exerts a greater socio-cultural impact and contributes to local, sustainable development. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that when historic buildings of this kind are used for commercial purposes it is important to ensure that they are part of the cultural experience not only for hotel guests but also for the local community. In this way, entire communities can appreciate their local cultural heritage (socio-cultural impact), which in turn strengthens cultural sustainability.

We have some serious work to do. Far too many people lead miserable lives because they lack the most basic necessities to deal with hunger, thirst, shelter, disease, or disability. In addition, the prosperity currently enjoyed by many of us may not be taken for granted in the future. The experts in this book have identified a range of breakthroughs that are urgently required if we are to improve the fate of humanity in the decades ahead and look to the future with greater confidence. There will be some hard choices, and some lines of research will probably need to be pursued at the expense of others. Industry should change and adopt new strategies. And we as a society should accept and foster that change. The evolution of technology, industry, and society is a complex process full of feedback mechanisms and surprises. It’s vital that we understand the most promising ways to facilitate the necessary changes of direction. The technologies proposed in this book aren’t straightforward; otherwise, they would have been identified much sooner. The days when you could produce a brilliant invention in your garden shed have largely gone. Anyone wishing to improve the current state of technology needs a solid pedigree and will need to labor long and hard with a group of dedicated colleagues, in many cases relying on extremely expensive equipment. Breakthroughs demand the stamina, laborious testing, and inspiration of countless scientists and engineers. Hundreds of thousands of design hours can go into a new microchip, car, or power-generation technique. Developing new technology is a complex process. That complexity is exemplified by the development of the laser. Einstein predicted the principle of stimulated emission on which lasers are based long before World War II. But it was many more decades before working lasers were created and longer still before they were put to practical use. Once we had them, however, we found we could use them in new scientific instruments that opened up fresh areas of research.

Content analysis of media coverage provided a setting for group work, critical thinking, research, and data analysis. The analysis was motivated by a series of news stories that had damaged the reputation of the local community. The question was whether local news coverage was negative toward the business community. A business class addressed the problem and found that articles that business would view as favorable predominated. Based on their research, the class formulated a public relations strategy. Although this setting is a business class, content analysis of news media would work in other classes that emphasize critical thinking and problem solving.

As the early COVID-19 outbreak sparked xenophobia against people of Asian and Chinese background, we collected data from Chinese migrants worldwide to test how discrimination at a macro-level was perceived by the Chinese during COVID-19 globally. Specifically, we examined (1) whether/how the Chinese migrants were aware of discrimination against their co-nationals during COVID; (2) if so, whether anger was a predominant reaction of these Chinese towards certain exposure to relevant information; (3) how responses of anger transcend across the group of Chinese migrants. Integrating the ecological approach to media and cultural psychology, as well as the intergroup perspective of social psychology, we conducted a study that explored the impact of traditional media exposure to discrimination on collective anger—a process mediated by national identity among the Chinese migrants. Findings provide some evidence that geographically dispersed mono-cultural groups may share or identify with collective emotions when facing xenophobic threats in a macro context. Further examination of cultural distance (between China and the host country) among the Chinese migrants also revealed a particular interaction between host newspaper coverage and cultural distance on national identity. These findings suggest further research to examine the emotional norms of similar cultures bonded via strong collective identities in times of intergroup threat and the theoretical possibility for diasporic identity processes.

Many agenda-setting researchers argue that personal experience with issues or events in a community diminishes use of mass media. This study challenges this notion and, drawing on the community attachment model, hypothesizes that personal experience normally will increase newspaper reading. Personal experience increases reading because rarely is it identical or isomorphic with news coverage, especially in pluralistic systems, and because, like social ties in general, personal experience often stimulates additional needs for information. Data support the key hypothesis when it comes to reading of the local community weekly and student newspapers, but not for the metropolitan newspaper.

This research was conducted in the Baluwarti settlement of Surakarta. This settlement was once the royal city of the Surakarta Hadiningrat palace, which was founded in 1745. The Surakarta Hadingrat Palace was built in 1742 by Paku Buwana II. In 1748 Paku Buwana II died, and was replaced by Paku Buwana III. During his reign, Paku Buwana III began to build a settlement area for soldiers, sentana dalem, and abdi dalem which is currently known as the Baluwarti settlement. One of the objectives of this research is to explore the concept of settlement spatial layout. By using historical studies research methods, it is known that the concept of settlement spatial layout is manunggaling kawula lan gusti. Then the exploration of the concept of spatial layout  continued until today (Paku Buwana XIII era). Based on the elements of spatial layout that are still and are still being maintained, it can be concluded that the spatial concept from the time of Paku Buwana III to Paku Buwana XIII is still being maintained. The Baluwarti settlement is a cultural heritage area of ??Solo City, and at the same time is a legacy of historical value, according to the Decree of the Mayor of Surakarta Number 646/116/i/1997 concerning the Determination of Ancient Historic Buildings and Areas in the Municipality of Surakarta.  In this effort to conserve settlement  areas, it also faces the same problems as in other places, including the absence of a clear concept in preservation so that the local community has not carried out conservation of the area properly. So that from the results of previous research, namely the concept of spatial layout which was maintained from the beginning until now (manunggaling kawula lan Gusti), will become the basic concept in preserving the settlement area of ??Baluwarti Surakarta.
